Six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy still has not fully recovered from the losses it suffered. Suddenly, word arrives of an impending Japanese attack, on an island not far from Hawaii, called Midway. The Americans send their last three aircraft carriers (one badly damaged) to defend the island. Through a series of near miraculous coincidences, and tactical maneuvers, the Americans manage to triumph over the obviously stronger Japanese carrier fleet.

One might call this film a "docu-drama", in the mold of "The Longest Day" and "Tora, Tora, Tora", but the script of Midway was far more "hollywoodized" than those earlier films.
