Even though Yakuza films are about Japanese gangsters and Japan has
tended to dominate the genre, there are a few American efforts. One of
those is the US/ Japan co-production "The Yakuza", which has some
serious Hollywood money and talent behind it with Sidney Pollack in the
director's chair and Robert Michum staring in the lead role. "The
Yakuza" is a Hollywood film, so expect more focus to linier plot rather
than the pure cinematic artistry typical of the Japanese only
productions. Still, it's a well made and entertaining film with Mitchum
giving a great performance and Pollack giving this film a good deal of
energy and developing the characters. It's not visual impressive
though, but that's because the focus is on the story rather than the
visuals. Speaking of which; the script is fairly well written, if not
spectacular. Still although I liked it, I did not love it. The movie
feels a bit too long and drags in several places, but overall this is a
pretty solid American effort in an otherwise Japanese dominated genre.
