Wow Kinji Fukasaku is one of Japan's finest directors. Fans of modern
Asian cinema will know him best for "Battle Royale", but fans of 60's
and 70's Japanese cinema will know him for several excellent Yakuza
films he made during that decade like "Graveyard of Honor", "Street
Mobster" and the "Yakuza Papers" series just to name a few. "Cops vs.
Thugs" is not his best Yakuza movie and it doesn't expand much beyond
his reoccurring theme about the similarities and collaborations between
the cops and the Yakuzas. Anyway, like the rest of his movies "Cops vs.
Thugs" is a very well shot film with lush colors, inventive lighting,
attention grabbing sets and good camera-work. I also found the script
to be well written, developing the characters very well and the acting
was very solid. It even featured a couple of very effective rape
scenes. The rape scenes weren't overtly graphic, but it still did its
job nevertheless. It also features several powerful dramatic scenes, my
favorite being when a corrupt cop's wife asks for a divorce at the
police station. After she refuses she outs him as a crook in front of
the entire police department, causing him to slap her. It's powerful
stuff. Still, when it came down to it I liked "Cops vs. Thugs", but I
didn't love it. I've seen better from Fukasaku and this didn't offer
any surprises. Regardless however this is still a well made and
entertaining film, a solid minor film in the Yakuza genre.
