Not Available on DVD: Drum

Mandingo, a 1975 movie based on the best-selling period potboiler by Kyle Onstott about sexual shenanigans between masters and slaves on the Falconhurst slave-breeding plantation, was savaged by critics who saw it as nothing but degrading, big-budget exploitation. Roger Ebert called it “racist trash”, a “piece of manure”, and “excruciating to sit through” and Mandingo certainly had it all; brutal violence, interracial sex, rape, infanticide, lynchings, and abundant nudity including full-frontal shots of it’s male star, boxer Ken Norton. But of course it was a huge hit and inspired a brief run of “slaverysploitation” films such as Passion Plantation (1975 aka Black Emmanuelle, White Emmanuelle ) and the cleverly titled Mandiga (1976). Mandingo was overwrought melodrama to be sure, but it’s a model of subtlety compared to its official sequel, the more lascivious Drum, a mean-spirited trash epic from 1976 that would never fly in today’s politically correct climate. Despite it’s …

In Loving Memory of Moviedrome

It will be no great shock to hear that living in London has both advantages and disadvantages. It is true that the cost of a 200 yd train journey may be the equivalent of a small flat in Hull, and rather like rats in New York it is said that you are never more than 100 metres away from a Premiership footballer or someone "in media", but the capital does have one thing in its favour: a vast range of unique cultural opportunities, among them some of the best independent cinemas in the country. It is true that many other cities, too, offer a wonderful alternative to the looming multiplex (Brighton, Oxford, Manchester, Bristol, to name just four that I have experienced myself) but merely by virtue of geographical and population size, London is unrivalled. At anything up to £15 they can be expensive, but for the chance to see a treasured classic on the big screen, …

Poster Alert! Alfredo Garcia, Tremors and Basket Case

28 November 2009 5:28 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

The Alamo Drafthouse recently had a screening of one of my all time favorite Sam Peckinpah film, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and they went asked Jeff Kleinsmith to create a piece for the occasion. The poster comes signed and numbered by the artist, is 24"x36" and the peeps at mondotees.com will charge you 30 bucks for it.

Terror Tuesday on Desember 1st will be a little special because poster artist Alex Pardee will be there in person to sign his two new amazing looking posters for a big favorite of mine, the Bacon classic, Tremors and the grindhouse classic Basket Case. The posters will be super limited and the only way to get them is to be there in person. The event will be at the Alamo Ritz and the signing will start at 7pm and end at 8:30pm. And afterwards you can enjoy Tremors on the big screen. …

“You two guys are definitely on my shit list” – Warren Oates.

Sometime around the time this film was made, director Sam Peckinpah went completely insane, making this one of the few examples of that fleeting and wonderful thing – a truly psychotic work of art. The great Warren Oates stars as an American pianist wasting away in a Mexican whorehouse bar. When two leisure-suited bounty killers approach him looking for a pimp named Alfredo Garcia who has impregnated the teenage daughter of a powerful man, Benny asks around, finds out that Garcia is already dead and concocts a plan to dig up the corpse, remove the head and collect the reward. Along with his prostitute girlfriend, he hits the road on his doom-laden journey. As you might guess, all hopes are shattered and Oates ends up alone, …

Exclusive Interview: The Psychobilly of Deadbolt...

4 October 2009 7:34 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

After checking out their recent release, Voodoo Trucker (read the review here), Fangoria Musick's resident dark-rock aficionado, Doctor Raven, sought out the self-professed "Scariest Band in the World" to get inside their heads and find out what makes these Psychobilly animals tick.

Below you'll find the Doctor's exclusive interview with Deadbolt.

With the acclaim currently being gained by many acts in the Northwest, my little batch of patchouli-stinking heaven is starting to become the first (maybe second) stop for many Goth, Industrial, and Psychobilly acts starting the West Coast leg of their tours.  And for these bands, there's no better place to do that than in Diablo’s Downtown Lounge, a creepy little dive affectionately referred to by locals as “The Satan Room.” Diablo’s works diligently to attract the best acts as they make their way through Oregon.

Boasting accolades like Best Nightclub in the Nation for 2007 and 2008, as …
