Jason Priestley One Step Closer in Journey to Bigscreen Conquest

· Don't look now, but Jason Priestley is gaining on Hollywood. The original Beverly Hills 90210 heartthrob has optioned the rights to the Rolling Stone article Death of a Freerider, about a 22-year-old mountain biker whose love of adventure ultimately leads him to a deadly stint as a border-hopping drug trafficker. For now Priestley is only onboard to produce, but he has directed TV in the past and apparently has only Ian Ziering to beat in the race to parlay 90210 stardom into self-made moguldom. Melrose Place/Dancing With the Stars: How's this for a little Hart to Hart?  After news broke that Ashlee Simpson-Wentz will be heading to Broadway to play Roxie Hart in Chicago, her predecessor, Dancing With the Stars' Samantha Harris, tells us she approves: "Ashlee is adorable and talented. She can bring in a younger audience plus has some international appeal." Hmmm... Maybe that's what the Melrose producers were thinking? A CW mole tells me Ashlee has already filmed her last scene for Melrose, and hubby Pete Wentz told us recently Ashlee dyed her hair black for an "upcoming role." Glee: Don't look now, Finn, but your baby mama, Quinn, is totally sharing some hot and steamy fluids with... »

Don't look now, but Kristin Cavallari totally drank the crazy punch. We met up with The Hills star last night at the Rock the Kasbah charity gala in Hollywood, and she insisted that The Hills "is the No. 1 show and we are doing really well." We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but The Hills' ratings are most assuredly down this season, by an average of more than 30 percent overall. (The season started out weak with 2.1 million and sank to 1.72 million last Tuesday.) Still, when asked about the lower ratings, Kristin insisted: "No, they are not! We had one drop because of the Hip Hop awards on VH1, but then they went up the next week." Whatever helps you sleep through the night,... »

Lars Von Trier, Antichrist and Me

I've had many strange moments with Lars "Von" Trier. I sat, soaking wet, in a thunderstorm at an outdoor cinema in Australia and cried like a baby at the end of Dancer in the Dark, I laughed so inappropriately at the orgy scene in  The Idiots that I had to leave the cinema until it was over and I still can't watch the end of Breaking the Waves with anyone else in the room as it remains, for me, one of the most powerful moments of my cinema life. It's interesting to look back at Von Trier's life before his films because in many ways it is as bizarre, hectic and sad as anything he has put to screen. Raised in Denmark, Von Trier's (some what) communist, nudist parents believed that rules and discipline were counter productive aspects of growing up and the little "Von" is thought to have had free reign. »
