(1972) The inaugural film in Irwin Allen's disaster film sweepstakes of the seventies follows the surviving passengers of a capsized luxury liner, literally flipped upside down by a massive tidal wave, as they work their way to the surface. Gene Hackman leads the all-star cast as the Reverend Frank Scott, who rouses Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Stella Stevens, Shelley Winters (who won an Oscar), Jack Albertson, Pamela Sue Martin and Arthur O'Connell (among others) to take matters into their own hands and hazard a deadly path that takes its toll on the dwindling party. Based on the book by Paul Gallico, it's directed by Ronald Neame. It was recently remade for TV and a new theatrical version is due out this spring. New 2-disc set features all-new commentary, featurettes and other supplements.
