Ben Kingsley: Roman Polanski Prada commercial A Therapy Roman Polanski is everywhere at the Cannes Film Festival. Polanski is the subject (and interviewee) of Laurent Bouzereau’s documentary Roman Polanski: A Film Memoir. He unveiled a restored print of his 1979/1980 Best Picture César and Oscar nominee Tess, starring Nastassja Kinski. And he is the director of the short film / Prada commercial A Therapy. Starring Helena Bonham Carter as a poor little Prada-clad rich woman and Ben Kingsley as her therapist and Prada aficionado, A Therapy was shown prior to the Tess screening. (Please scroll down.) Co-written by Polanski and The Ghost Writer‘s Ronald Harwood, A Therapy boasts music by The Queen‘s Alexandre Desplat, gorgeous cinematography by Girl with the Pearl Earring‘s Eduardo Serra, production design by The Godfather‘s Dean Tavoularis, and editing by The Pianist‘s Hervé de Luze. It's been a decade since his directorial debut "Cq" but Roman Coppola will definitely make headlines later this year with his new film, "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" -- if anything for his choice of male lead in Charlie Sheen. The middle child of Francis Ford Coppola, Roman has been immersed in the film industry since childhood (he featured as one of Tom Hagen's kids in "The Godfather") and, over the years, has often found time to collaborate with his father, sister and Wes Anderson. It's curious that Coppola hasn't been behind the camera more often, but the filmmaker has revealed that he has a few projects in mind he hopes to tackle after this sophomore effort.
"I have this idea for a kids film I’d like to do in the spirit of 'Bugsy Malone,' with an all kid cast," Coppola explained. "So »

On the Road: Kristen Stewart as Marylou, Sam Riley‘s / Sal Paradise’s ear "I just had a great idea, you guys are gonna love it!" exclaims Garrett Hedlund‘s Dean Moriarty at the end of this French-subtitled On the Road clip. (Please scroll down to check out Sur la route.) Also seen in the clip are Kristen Stewart‘s Marylou and Sam Riley‘s Sal Paradise. Walter Salles directed this year’s Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or contender. Kristen Stewart is the focus of this particular On the Road clip, as Marylou is apparently telling Sal that she’s going to dump Dean. She sounds a bit like a fatalist: better dump Dean before he dumps her. In any case, she’s already got a fiance at home, a sailor. Marylou also sounds like a traditionalist here: she wants a house and a baby, "something normal. »

On the Road interview: Garrett Hedlund, Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley "It’s interesting to play characters that have existed," says Kristen Stewart in an On the Road video interview posted at Screenslam. (Please scroll down.) "Especially when you have grown to love those people. When I played Joan Jett, I couldn’t improvise. I felt so weird putting words in her mouth. I always referred to her. And in this case, we wouldn’t be doing On the Road right, unless it was found, unless so much of it was, like, learned and then forgotten, so we could actually just discover it ourselves." Screenslam will be posting several interviews with various On the Road talent in the next few days. On the Road, in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, opens in France on May 23. Directed by Walter Salles — of previous road movies Central Station »

The Moonrise Kingdom star tells all about his acting break, his taste in cassettes and his favourite film of the 70s
You've worked with Wes Anderson many times, do you feel like a staple element of his films?
Oh no, Bill Murray is the staple. And the stapler. He's like the King of Staples. Wes and I are close friends and he's technically a mentor to me. He gave me my first ever acting job on Rushmore when I was 17, so I kind of owe everything to that. But I'm always surprised if he calls me to say there's a part for me in his new film.
How long did you give to Moonrise Kingdom?
Er, three days. Which doesn't sound very much, but I didn't want to go home after. He's got so good at establishing this vibe on set. It's much more efficient than when we started, very nimble and agile. »

Late last week we were treated to the first images of Franck Khalfoun’s remake of the graphic 1980 psycho-thriller Maniac. The original film, directed by William Lustig and starring the late Rocky and The Godfather actor Joe Spinell, told the disturbing tale of Frank, a man whose abuse as a child from his domineering mother, led to psychopathic behaviour on the dark, sleazy streets of New York. The notorious realistic gore effects came from make-up effects legend Tom Savini.
Here we have the chilling teaser trailer from the updated version, written and produced by Piranha 3D and The Hills Have Eyes remake director Alexandre Aja along with filmmaking partner Gregory Lavesseur. Elijah Wood takes the over lead role of Frank, starring alongside America Olivo, Nora Arnezeder, Morgane Slemp and Liane Balaban, likely playing the victims of his obsessive killing spree.
We’re also expecting a remake of another William Lustig exploitation horror, »

Earlier this year Paramount sued the Mario Puzo estate — author of the venerable mafia tale, The Godfather — to halt the publication of an "unauthorized" story, pitched as a new sequel/prequel. It didn't jibe with the iconic reputation of the film series for the studio, but the estate countersued saying that their mutual contract didn't include book rights. Both parties have agreed to make a deal to allow the release of a new Godfather prequel — written by Ed Falco, "based on a screenplay by Mario Puzo," and recently published. The Depression-era The Family Corleone's profits will be put in escrow until the court decides who wins publishing rights. Deadline shares that "things could get more complicated if &hellip...

I have scheduled this first part of my Cannes 2012 Preview to publish while I am somewhere over the middle of the United States, on my way to New York where I will connect with a flight heading into Nice. I'll be arriving in Cannes some time around 1 Pm Cet and my third straight journey to the Cannes Film Festival will begin, an experience that has easily become the #1 highlight of my year when it comes to covering movies. As hard as I have to work to cover the festival each year, it is absolutely worth it and based on the selection this year it looks like it will be just as fascinating. To begin, the festival runs from May 16-27, but I will only be in town through the morning of the 24th. As a result, two films that probably would have made my top ten most anticipated movies list won't, »

It’s called The Family Corleone, and it’s been out since May 8th, a fact which makes the following legal squabble a little redundant as, really, who cares? The book is out, read it if you want; wait for the inevitable movie, if you can’t be bothered.
Written by Ed Falco, based on a “screenplay” by original Godfather author Mario Puzo (if the cover copy is to be believed), The Family Corleone is a prequel to the bestselling book and all-time classic movie. Set in the 1930s, it appears to centre around the relationship between Vito Corleone and his young children, especially hot-headed Sonny Corleone (played by James Caan in the movie), about whom Vito is quite concerned.
So where was the beef?
On Paramount’s plate.
According to the film studio, the book “tarnished the legacy” of the films (insert your own cruel Godfather III joke here) and sued Puzo’s estate. »

Apparently The Godfather doesn't sleep with the fishes anymore...
When you think of mafia movies The Godfather automatically comes to everyones' mind first and rightfully so. The trilogy easily tops the crime drama genre, and are among the best films of all time. Many may have believed we'd seen the last of the Corleone family (Al Pacino is awesome!) in The Godfather III, followed with the passing of author Mario Puzo in 1999, however that's not the case.
It just so happens a book by Ed Falco, based on an unproduced Puzo screenplay, "The Family Corleone" may eventually see its film rights picked up Paramount. »

About a year ago, it was reported that Ed Falco wrote "The Family Corleone" book, which is a prequel to Mario Puzo's "The Godfather" novel and is based on an unproduced screenplay by Puzo. Paramount sued Puzo's estate, claiming that it owns the publishing rights and that the book tarnishes the legacy of the films. But the two parties just agreed on a deal in order to let the book be released (view on Amazon). The deal was that all profits would be placed in an escrow account until this legal matter was resolved. Paramount's lawyer noted that things could become more complicated if the book does well and "there's an attraction to do a movie." Plot: New York, 1933. The city and the nation are in the depths of the Great Depression. The crime families of New York have prospered in this time, but with the coming end of Prohibition, »

For someone who's considered one of the greatest filmmakers in history, Sergio Leone was not especially prolific. While he worked extensively as an assistant director (with credits including "Bicycle Thieves," "Quo Vadis" and "Ben Hur"), he was only credited on seven films across his thirty-year career (with uncredited direction work on three others -- "The Last Days Of Pompeii," "My Name Is Nobody" and "A Genius, Two Partners and A Dupe").
But given that those films include some of the greatest Westerns -- the Man With No Name trilogy, and "Once Upon A Time In The West" -- and a wonderful crime epic, "Once Upon A Time In America," it's hard not to mourn that we didn't get more films from the director, who passed away 23 years ago today, on April 30th, 1989. But it wasn't for a lack of trying, as there were a number of other projects that Leone considered, »

If all goes well, the concluding part of the Sarkar saga would hit the floors in October, 2012. The initial feeler that Sarkar 3 was on the cards was let out by Ramu himself on the sets of Bhoot 2 in Pali Hill, Bandra where he announced, “Sarkar 3 will go on floors this October. The script is almost ready.”
Speculations were rife about the Bachchan bahu making a comeback into films with this last installment of the Sarkar trilogy, which is believed to be Ram Gopal Varma’s tribute to Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather series. Ash, who was on a sabbatical during her maternity was rumored to make her grand comeback with Sarkar 3. The buzz is now out that Ash might return to Hindi cinema with either King Khan or John Abraham in the movie Happy Birthday. It was also heard that she might be doing Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani with Srk. »

Vci Entertainment have released the 1952 B Western Hellgate as a burn-to-order DVD. Viewing it is a worthy experience, as this film is representative of so many fine features that have largely been lost to time. Sterling Hayden plays Gil Hanley, a quiet veterinarian living in post-Civil War Kansas. The place had been terrorized during the war by marauding parties of renegades fighting on both sides. These raiders often killed and tortured indiscriminately (see The Outlaw Josey Wales). With the war over for two years, the U.S. Army is trying to track down these criminals and bring them to justice. Hanley's life changes for the worse when he treats an escaped criminal for injuries without knowing his identity. Circumstantial evidence leads the army to arrest him and, in a kangaroo court held by a military tribunal, he is sentenced to hard labor at Hellgate Prison. The place is appropriately named, »

Somehow we’d fallen into calling her “Luce the Moose.” No one even remembers why. After that, I used to buy her some kind of moose – a stuffed doll, a carving, anything – every Christmas. Her given name was Lucy Sylvia Mesce. Lucia, actually, but other than her immigrant parents, I don’t think anybody ever called her that.
She passed away from a sudden cardiac arrest on Monday, April 2, sometime around 5:30 p.m., at the age of 81.
She was my mother.

Everything that we have seen and heard, the people that we have known and the experiences we have had shape us, influence us, nudge and shove us this way and that.
