The El Topo and Holy Mountain director thrilled the 1970s counter-culture. Now his crazed visions are turning on everyone from Santigold to Kasabian
Eyebrows, hopes and ceremonially lit bongs were all raised earlier this year with the news that Alejandro Jodorowsky was finally making another movie. The high priest of head-trip cinema, Jodorowsky blew the collective mind of the counter-culture with a handful of supremely odd movies in the 1970s, such as El Topo and The Holy Mountain, but despite continual promises and rumours, Jodorowsky's long-awaited return never seemed to materialise. In the meantime, his work has been seized upon by a new generation of hipsters desperately seeking out-there inspiration, as we shall see. This year, though, at the Cannes film festival, Jodorowsky announced he had raised the cash for his next movie. It would be called King Shot, and it would be a metaphysical western set in a desert casino,

Alejandro Jodorowsky Gets Funding for Dream Project 'Abel Cain'

Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky is a diverse artist with an eclectic background that includes being a scholar, playwright, composer, actor, comic book writer, historian and psychotherapist. The man is a chameleon. In May it was announced that Jodorowsky was going to work with acclaimed director David Lynch on King Shot which was described as a "metaphysical spaghetti western." Though he hasn't exactly been relevant in contemporary filmmaking over the past two decades, it looks like his work with Lynch has paid off as Quiet Earth reports that he now has the funding needed to make his dream project Abel Cain.
Jodorowsky calls the film "the sons of El Topo" (see above), a nod to his 1970 revisionist western El Topo. The story follows Abel and Cain who, upon the death of their mother, embark on a journey to bury her holy body next to their father's grave on a forbidden paradise

"I wanted to make a film called Abel Cain which was the Son of El Topo but I could not raise the money. Too expensive. You know, I am a poor poet trying to make artistic, individual pictures. I am not a multinational." -- Alejandro Jodorowsky
The above quote appeared in an old interview from 2007 when things were looking grim for any new Jodorowsky project. Now, I'm not sure if it's because of Jodorowsky's new connection with David Lynch and their work on King Shot or if it's just because people still care about making seriously wacked out art cinema, but we're happy to report that Jodorowsky's dream project, Abel Cain, has found it's money and is in the early stages of pre-production.
Producers Arcadiy Golubovich and Olga Mirimskaya, along with the help of Parallel Films, are making it all happen.
Synopsis:

Fango got a bunch of exclusive photos (see them below) and a progress report from Chilean filmmaker Francesc Morales on his wild and surreal horror film Humanimal. We last brought you word on the movie, which recently wrapped, here.
“We’re currently working on postproduction and editing the film and are hoping to have the final copy in around two months,” Morales tells Fango. The movie, which showcases actors dressed in animal costumes, gained a good deal of attention from its unsettling teaser trailer (which can be seen below), which led Morales to secure a bigger budget to help him land better production values and round up a solid ensemble. “As the movie is a very surrealist story, it was necessary for us to make a teaser trailer to find investors,” he explains.
“Last year, we shot 15 minutes of actual scenes that allowed us to show how the movie was going to feel and look.

If you're familiar with the work of Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (Fando y Lis, El Topo, The Holy Mountain), you might wonder how he'd fit in with modern cinema. He's something of a relic, from a great time when someone like Luis Bunuel could regularly garner Oscar nominations, and when former Beatles (and their wives) had their hands in producing art films. Today, however, John Lennon is no longer around to champion Jodorowsky, and the shocking surrealist has lost his placement in between Bunuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini in terms of contemporary relevance. Now he's set to make his triumphant return.
Nearly 20 years after his last film (The Rainbow Thief with Peter O'Toole), Jodorowsky will return to filmmaking with the "metaphysical spaghetti western" King Shot. And, he's managed to find some appropriate collaborators who will allow him to fit in well with other current iconoclasts.
This time around David Lynch is one of the producers,

According to Screen Daily:
“Uj Budapest FilmStudio’s Laszlo Kantor has revealed further details of one of the more colourful projects currently being hatched in the market, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s King Shot. Financing is nearing completion on the $7.4m (€5.5m) film, first announced in Cannes last year and billed as a “metaphysical spaghetti western.” An Italian partner is poised to board the film and shooting has now been set for early October in Spain
Kantor is co-producing alongside an array of partners, among them David Lynch, whose outfit Absurda is handling world sales. Paris-based Hungarian Simon Shandor of Clavis Film is the lead producer. The project stars Nick Nolte, Cannes jury member Asia Argento, Udo Kier and Marilyn Manson. Vilmos Zsigmond has now been brought on board as cinematographer.
The film marks the maverick Jodorowsky’s return to directing after a 20 year break. His earlier works, including Santa Sangre, El Topo and The Holy Mountain,

Chilean auteur Alejandro Jodorowsky has had a great Cannes, leaving the festival with funding almost complete on his next project King Shot. The art-house director has been away from our screens for almost 20 years and King Shot sees him return with what's intriguingly billed as a metaphysical spaghetti Western. To our ears that sounds like shades of cult classic El Topo and Jarmusch's Dead Man. With a cast that includes Nick Nolte and Marilyn Manson - not to mention David Lynch as co-producer - it should be at least as mind-twisting.Jodorowsky's reputation for stirring audiences into a bit of a frenzy is was established from the moment his 1967 debut Fando Y Lis caused a full-scale riot at its premiere. The 80 year-old's return should be eagerly anticipated, not least for his ready line in Cantona-esque pronouncements ("I don't live in France, I live in myself," "Most directors make films with

My synapses are tingling! The gears are finally turning on Alejandro Jodorowsky's latest project, King Shot, which has been getting indie weirdos chattering since 2006 or so. According to ScreenDaily, it will begin shooting this October.
Jodorowsky is the director of such cosmically trippy films as El Topo and Holy Mountain that were only recently released in region 1 DVD format after years of legal wrangling with his former partner Allen Klein of Abkco films. He's also a tarot card reader and, according to his bio, "has developed a mixture of psychotherapy and shamanism called Psychomagic."
A so-called "metaphysical spaghetti western," King Shot stars Marilyn Manson, Asia Argento, Nick Nolte, Udo Kier, and Alejandro's son Adan Jodorowsky (who was also in his father's film Santa Sangre). Nolte and David Freaking Lynch are executive producers. Lynch's Absurda production company is also the worldwide sales rep.
According to Hollywood Reporter, "Marilyn Manson is
