Some art disappears so completely that it's very existence seems hazy and imagined, certainly my jumpy, disobedient copy of Girl Stroke Boy seems to deeply resent me, preferring to sit on the shelf and pretend not to be there. How a film that seems to have the words 'minor classic' scratched all over it can avoid both the TV schedules and reissue labels so assiduously is unfathomable, but there's a good chance that you're reading this having never seen the movie. Michael Hordern's graceful and goodhearted performance is the highlight of the whole thing, while Clive Francis and Straker glow with warmth. The script is so quotable it's ridiculous, almost every line could be repeated at work tomorrow and Bob Kellet acknowledges the film's theatrical roots with lots of doors and tightly packed scenes. And despite the snow and smiles at the end, you wonder if somewhere in Hertfordshire its all still raging.
