In what is basically Andy Milligan's exploitation version of "The Old
Dark House" type story, guests at a Victorian mansion trying to gain
their inheritance are picked off one by one by a mysterious killer.
Let's make one thing perfectly clear. "The Ghastly Ones" isn't a well
made movie. It's not even a passably well made movie, but it is one
hell on an entertaining one. Lately I've been on a big "so bad it's
good" kick, and "The Ghastly Ones" is one of the more interesting ones
I've seen. It has terrible acting, cheep gore that seems to come from
nowhere, a script that fails to give the characters any real
personality and the direction from Milligan is all over the map, he
never appears to have any set goal in mind he would like to achieve by
making this film. Needless to say I loved it. The whole thing is very
bizarre and random it really is well worth watching. Apart from the bad
movie ascetic that makes it fun to watch, "The Ghastly Ones" is also a
good example of the photo-slasher film, so fans of that genre should be
interested in checking it out.
