DVD Playhouse—November 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Watchmen—The Ultimate Cut (Warner Bros.) Director Zack Snyder’s film of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ landmark graphic novel is as worthy an adaptation of a great book that has ever been filmed. In an alternative version of the year 1985, Richard Nixon is serving his third term as President and super heroes have been outlawed by a congressional act, in spite of the fact that two of the most high-profile “masks,” Dr. Manhattan (Billy Cruddup) and The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) helped the U.S. win the Vietnam War. When The Comedian is found murdered, many former heroes become concerned that a conspiracy is afoot to assassinate retired costumed crime fighters. Former masks Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson), Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and still-operating Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley, in an Oscar-worthy turn) launch an investigation of their own, all while the Pentagon’s “Doomsday »

The Blu-Ray Review: Easy Rider

4 November 2009 8:59 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

While I definitely acknowledge that Easy Rider is a classic film, that doesn't mean I think it's very good. Confusing? Perhaps, but it doesn't have to be.

To me, a "classic" is anything that stands the test of time and remains enjoyable after many years or that made a significant impact upon the genre. I'd argue that Rider doesn't qualify in the former category but that it certainly meets the latter criteria. When I watched the original DVD, it was the third time I saw Easy Rider. I first viewed it on VHS about 15 years earlier and I absolutely loathed it. Since I didn't really experience the Sixties firsthand - I only lived through two and a half years of that decade, so for some strange reason, my memories of it remain few - I have to rely on the media's depictions to give me knowledge of it. Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper smoked real cannabis during a scene for movie classic Easy Rider.

Fonda has confessed the trio used "real pot" to capture the moment Nicholson's character tries the drug for the first time.

But he refutes longstanding rumours they took Lsd on the set of the 1969 movie.

Fonda tells Extra, "We did not take Lsd, no matter what the rumours say. You can't make a movie when you're ripped like that." »

Making The (Up) Grade: Easy Rider

30 October 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The great opportunity with new presentation formats for established forms of entertainment is that newcomers can be introduced and experience them for the very first time; the burden with them is that longtime fans have to forage through multiple editions and decide which one is best. Enter "Making The (Up) Grade," Cinematical's examination of these new, alternate, special editions of films that have long since become favorites. This week's selection, Easy Rider, is one of those cases where people may or may not have purchased the film before, but because it's been so thoroughly discussed and dissected in cinematic culture for the past forty years, it seems almost a redundant choice for any person who considers him- or herself a cinephile.

Is this new 40th Anniversary Blu-ray really better? Let's take a look and see.

Dennis Hopper Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

30 October 2009 7:02 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

This is some very upsetting news.

It appears that actor Dennis Hopper has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Earlier this month, there were some reports that Hopper had been rushed to the hospital for an undisclosed reason. Now, according to the BBC, Hopper is entering a special program for treatment in California. The initial stay in the hospital was reportedly due to flu-like symptoms and dehydration.

Hopper has had a long and varied history in cinema, ranging back to his friendship in his youth with actor James Dean. He went from playing bit parts to writing, directing, and starring in Easy Rider, which many regard as one of the formative films of 1960s and 1970s cinema. Since then, he has played many memorable roles in over 200 productions, ranging from villains in Speed and Waterworld to a psychotic photographer in Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. »

Dennis Hopper Cancels Australian Trip

29 October 2009 9:33 PM, PDT | FilmInk.com.au | See recent FilmInk.com.au news »

The revelation that Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper has prostate cancer is a hard pill to swallow. A man of magnanimous presence on screen, and star of films such Easy Rider, Mad Dog Morgan, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet and Speed, he has undoubtedly made his name as a tough guy not to be messed with. However, he must now focus all his strength and attention on recovery, which, as a result, puts his artistic endeavours on the backburner.   First on the list is the cancellation of Hopper's imminent plans to arrive in Melbourne. The subject of an exclusive Australian exhibition due to open Thursday 12 November at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Acmi), Hopper had arranged to fly in next week to oversee the installation, and take part in the official opening program. »

Legendary actor Dennis Hopper has been diagnosed with prostate cancer - just weeks after he was hospitalised for "severe flu-like symptoms".

The Easy Rider star was admitted to a medical facility in New York at the end of September after complaining of stomach cramps while on promotional duties for his latest TV show, Crash.

Hopper's spokesperson brushed off reports the actor was seriously ill, insisting the star was back on his feet and "feeling much better" the day after he was hospitalised.

'Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen' Rolls Out, 'Blood' Leaks And More, In The DVD Report For October 20

20 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's big, it's loud and now the bonafide monster film of the year is rolling out on store shelves. Michael Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" made gobs of money at the box office and now it almost singled-handedly owns the release calendar this week. But a few other titles do manage to break through the shape-shifting pack, and we'll cover them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, October 20, 2009.

There's not much purpose in rehashing the plot to "Revenge of the Fallen," the follow-up to the bombastic intergalactic war between the Autobots and the Decepticons. Anyone interested in the DVD and Blu-ray has already seen the film, so the only thing really worth discussing are whether the presentation and special features make it a must-own. Well, if you count yourself a fan of the robot-friendly franchise, then it's a definite yes. Like the first film's home video release, »

This Week in Blu-ray: Revenge of the Fallen Releases

20 October 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In this edition of This Week in Blu-ray, it's another round of slim pickings as I continue to save you money at your local retailer. Usually, I'm about as buy-happy as they come -- often recommending a Blu-ray release purely on the grounds that its a good looking movie, or that its one of those must have collector's titles, despite its special feature selection. But this week, as it was last week, there just isn't much to choose from. Sure, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is dropping and I'm sure some of you will buy it, but I didn't get a chance to look at it in advance, so I'm going with the minuscule amount of information that I have. And that just isn't good enough to save it from the 'rent' pile, where it resides with a few other titles. So come with me this week, friends, and save some of that hard earned cash as »

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen I know I shouldn't be surprised the Blu-ray, 2-disc DVD and single-disc DVD are the numbers 1, 2 and 3 best-sellers at Amazon this week, but for some reason I would have thought all the negative talk about this film surrounding its release would have discouraged folks to throw to down their hard-earned cash to endure this pummeling one more time. However, I can say it is nice to see prices on Blu-rays are dropping slightly, so much to the point the Blu-ray edition of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is actually $3 less than the 2-disc DVD, at only $19.99. That's all I really have to say about this one. Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection) I just reviewed the Blu-ray edition of this one (read that here) and was really impressed with the entire package, which not only includes Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding, »
