Yet Another Short-Run Classic.

Long before Harry Potter, we had Catweazle. Nowhere near as successful and famous as his latter-day juvenile contender, he was still a far more entertaining character.

Tumbling out of some medieval time-warp into the (then) present day 1970, he was obliged to come to terms with science and technology that made otherwise magical experiences pass into common place. A young boy acted as his guard, guide and mentor. The great charm of this programme arose from the misunderstandings that arose from their temporally distanced cultures, and the understanding and comradeship that developed between them as friends.

Thus, there is the telephone from which conversation is had, reinterpreted as a telling-bone on account of its shape and grammatical similarity. We see, the young boy switch on a bathroom light with the pull-chord, and Catweazle misconstruing the toilet chain for the same purpose. 'Thou art truly a great magician' and at other times 'Nay, nay, thou art a toad', with sundry similar expressions. Truth to tell; someone from Catweazle's epoch wouldn't speak or understand any contemporary English, but it's just a bit of kids fantasy, so what the hell?

I say it was for kids, but adults who stopped to linger soon fell under his spell too.

This was one of those short-running series that never outstayed its welcome. By the time the formula had run its course, the ancient sorcerer had found a way home to his own age, and was never seen on telly again (except, perhaps, as repeats).

Although the concept of a dirty (literally) old stranger befriending a young boy was a tricky one to address, especially when that friendship must be kept secret. It was handled with very great care, and a light enough touch as to never raise a doubt in the audience. Whether or not it could as easily be worked today in a world of paedophilic paranoia is another matter entirely. I suspect political-correctness would give it the axe. In fact that's probably why it has so seldom been screened since.

This was a wonderfully imaginative series from the golden age of short-run classics. Check-out 'The Prisoner' or 'The Guardians', or 'The Clangers', to name but a few others. It's available on DVD, now. and a generation who haven't met Mr Catweazle have a grand treat in store.

Well worth a purchase for some lucky kid's birthday present. They'll be watching this and quoting the lines long after any toys have lost their charm.

Go get it.

Highly original and great fun family television

This was Geoffrey Bayldons finest hour. The premise of a medieval magician with questionable skills accidentally transported forward in time 900 years is a great canvas to write of his exploits dealing with life in the modern world (well, England circa 1970 anyway).

Although the 'fish out of water' scenario has been done in other TV shows and films, this has a certain charm of its own, with some delightful characterisation, amusing dialogue and guest appearances by the likes of Hattie Jacques amongst others to keep the viewer watching. Catweazle's reactions to modern life and its tools (the telephone in particular) is at times hilarious. And although a series now half a century old is bound to show its age, this surprisingly adds to its charm, seeing our nation in a time with no mobile phones, no dvd or VHS players, no video games and every car is british made adds to its appeal.

If you are under ten (or over 40 and remember those simpler times) then you should enjoy the wit and wisdom of our medieval sorcerer hero stranded in time, desperate to get back to his. The first series is definitely superior to the second. It is fresher for a start and had more unpredictable scenarios to enjoy. Despite the more polished look, the second series starts to run out of steam and ideas by the midway point and this is what stopped me giving it ten stars. Bayldon rightly felt the scripts started to run out of ideas after about episode six of series two but the cast (including the underused Peter Butterworth) battle through and end on a high note. In fact series creator Richard Carpenter felt that the change of setting and supporting cast in series two and the relocation to a stately home was a mistake by the producers. But don't let that put you off the whole Catweazle experience and just how creative a writer Richard Carpenter was and how despite a long stage, screen and television career, Geoffrey Bayldon will always be remembered for this iconic character.

Superior family programming from the golden era of imagination

A medieval English magician tries to escape the invading Norman armies of the 11th century and inadvertently sends himself 900 years into the future where he must survive and work out a way to return to his own time.

Both witty and inventive with a solid turn from the late Geoffrey Bayldon, this fun show entertained a generation of children and adults. Well written by the talented Richard Carpenter, there is also a nostalgiafest going on here for middle aged adults looking at how relatively unspoilt the English countryside was just half a century ago and may bring back some memories of their youth.

No nastiness here, just good fun and whilst we watch Catweazle learn about modernity we also learn a little about us too.

A good cast helps pad the show out too. Personally I found series one to be more interesting than series two and the show was starting to flag a little by the middle of the second series, although the wonderful Peter Butterworth does help partially redeem it, but it it is still a darned sight more watchable than the majority of family centric TV shows these days. The innocence of a bygone era coupled with a 'famous five' sense of adventure and well written characters kept this show ticking along. Some fun cameos help with the nostalgia value as well.

Good clean fun and hugely inventive.

Charming and hilarious

This UK series about a magician from the norman times trapped in 20th century england is really charming and hilarious to watch.Sadly only 2 series were ever made and fortunately have now become available on video for those of us now in our late 30's and early 40's+ to enjoy all over again.There are memorable scenes and performances but all involved and richard carpenter who wrote the original storylines was arguably a little ahead of his time dealing with such themes as astrology and the runes etc. I loved this series,the second series being my personal favourite of the two.I can watch these episodes over and over and still laugh my head off.10 out of 10 all they way.Simply brilliant!Salmay dalmay adonay!

Childhood memories that were real

I watched Catweazle when it was originally broadcast and I loved it. I was only seven and nearly 50 years on Talking Pictures channel have started showing it again and it's even better than I remember, possibly because I originally watched it in good old black and white and now I'm watching it on a colour TV. Thank you Talking Pictures, another terrific series from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Happy memories.

Catweazle's a jolly good fellow

When I think of the TV shows I loved as a kid that seem to have disappeared into the ether of television limbo such as many episodes of Patrick Troughton's Dr Who, series one and two of "Ace Of Wands" and the whole of "The Flaxton Boys", it seems almost like magic that from around the same time, the two series, each comprising thirteen episodes of Richard Carpenter's creation of Catweazle can be tracked down and watched. I can well remember watching it on Sundays at teatime and have just finished watching the last episode of Series One. I'm happy to say it holds up really well today, a testament to Carpenter's skilful writing and Geoffrey Bayldon's enchanting performance in the title role. Catweazle of course was the Anglo Saxon wizard who to escape pursuing Norman soldiers cast a spell on himself which threw him 900 years into the future. There he meets and forms a dependant, if sometimes prickly friendship with a teenage boy, nicknamed "Carrot" whose father's farmhouse now stands on the spot of his old dwelling.

Just about the only spell of Catweazle to work in the modern day is that of hypnosis which he casts on young Carrot to never reveal his identity to others and to occasionally make himself invisible to certain people, such as big-lunk farmhand George, who's regularly around. Catweazle's only aim is to get himself back to his own time but until he finds the right spell to do this there's plenty of time for he and Carrot to have many misadventures out in the countryside where the boy and his recently widowed dad live.

Clad only in a raggedy old gown and sporting tousled long hair and grizzled beard, Catweazle was a terrific creation, brought to life wonderfully by Bayldon who, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, immerses himself totally in the part to create one of British children's TV's most original and lovable characters. Much of the fun comes from old Cat becoming acquainted with modern inventions such as the motor car, camera, telephone (or telling-bone as he amusingly terms it) and even the simple light bulb a.k.a. the sun in a bottle to his disbelieving eyes. There's a nice chemistry between the old magician and his schoolboy chum, winningly played by young Robin Davies and the rest of the adult cast put in performances notably lacking condescension. Guest stars throughout this run included well-known British actors like Hattie Jacques, Peter Sallis, John Junkin and Patricia Hayes but it's fair to say none of them got the better of the displaced old boy.

Topped off with a bright and breezy theme tune, it's a really lovely series the likes of which they certainly don't make anymore and I'm now looking forward to moving onto series two.

Love it!!! Great memories of childhood!

I don't think was shown in the US. I was raised in Mexico and is where I saw it. I have asked many people who grow up in the US and don't have a clue of "Catweazle" it was a dorky show, but good memories of my childhood. Spanish title "El Brujo Que Quizo Volar" "The sorcerer who wanted to fly"

: A Charming Blend of Magic and Nostalgia, Well Deserving of an 8/10

Catweazle holds a special place as a classic English series, earning a well-deserved 8/10 from me. Originally aimed at children, this enchanting show has proven to be a delightful watch for adults as well, thanks to its timeless charm and whimsical storytelling.

The series, with its mix of magic, humor, and a touch of nostalgia, captivates viewers of all ages. Its appeal lies in the clever writing and the endearing portrayal of the titular character, Catweazle, a wizard from the 11th century who finds himself in the 20th century. Nothing much to dislike here

CATWEAZLE is a cult British kid's TV show that I missed growing up, only to recently catch up on it for the first time thanks to the efforts of Talking Pictures TV (a quite wonderful British channel dedicated to old fare) at bringing it back to our screens. It lasts for a brief two series and follows the misadventures of a Norman-era sorcerer, played to the hilt by the lovable Geoffrey Bayldon, as he's catapulted to the present day.

In the first series, Catweazle hides out at a rambling farmhouse and indulges in various secret adventures with a boy living there; disbelieving adults including Charles Tingwell and Neil McCarthy provide antagonism. The second series swaps to a country mansion where Catweazle befriends another boy while kooky supporting characters like Peter Butterworth keep popping up. The second series is also more quest-focused, as our hero attempts to gather the thirteen signs of the zodiac that will allow his return back to his own time. The humour is often juvenile but warm-hearted, enlivened by classic old-school special effects, and it's notable that both series have a downbeat final episode that works well.

Nostalgia strikes again!

This is nostalgia at its finest!

For all people who just desire to watch a simple series about friendship and how fast one can be overrun by nowadays' inventions, this is the perfect entertainment. Short episodes, no boring lenghts and especially enough but not too much humor.

The main character, Catweazle, is a wizard from about 1066 who by accident teleported himself and his toad into the 1970s. There, he is confronted with all kinds of modern technology (electricity, cars etc.). Together with a teenage friend, he finds at the beginning of each season, he explores this unknown time and tries to get back in his own time.

Interestingly enough, Catweazle is not as dumb as any other cliched time traveler who still can't figure out the technology of the future on the third try.

I also liked the actors really well: Geoffrey Bayldon just perfectly melts into the role of Catweazle. Harold, Cedric (Catweazle's friends in season one and two) and Catweazle are portrayed in a perfect manny, a bit over the top but not too much. Thus, each character grows on you within the first episode.

Although it's a kids show, also adults can have fun with it. It is one of the best British TV shows to just relax for approx. 25 minutes per episode. I loved watching it again!

Catweazle's Magical Mayhem!

Filmed with humor, warmth and charm, Catweazle captured the imagination of children everywhere, with the story of a hapless magician and his pet toad Touchwood, trapped nine hundred years ahead of their time. Filmed to the brim with hilarious pandemonium and magical mayhem the loveable sorcerer enters a labyrinth of chaos on his quest to return to his own time.

Unforgettable for Geoffrey Bayldon's outstanding performance as Catweazle, the series also boasted a superb regular cast of Charles Tingwell (Mr Bennet), Neil McCarthy (Sam) and Robin Davies (Carrot), whilst guest appearances by some of Britain's top actors of the time ensured the series of it's quality status.

An instant childrens TV classic Catweazle was applauded by critics and fans alike when it was first shown, earning it's writer Richard Carpenter, a Writers Guild award in 1971.

Great Show~

I grew up watching this show (in German 'voiceover') and I can only recommend it to viewers of all ages. I actually just ordered the DVD's and can't wait to watch it again and again. The Brit's have done a great job with this show by treating kids like people and not like little dummies, the story line is continuously interesting and of course Catweazle himself is an incredible character. Catweazle's sudden journey from the 11th century into the 20th century is a tale of wonderful stories that make you laugh and cry and make you want to be part of the story. The actor that plays Catweazle did a great job acting as if he was from the 11th century and his amazement about 'new' inventions in the 20th century seem so real, I remember laughing until my belly hurt when he discovered the phone. I don't want to give away to much because I believe this is a show that is still worth watching in this day and age. A must see:-) Cheerio!!

Poor Catweazle! All he wanted was a spell that would make him fly. While he never took off (not by magic, anyway), the series definitely did!
