Is Tiger Woods Good or Bad for You?

16 December 2009 7:41 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

There is a more and more insistent question being asked by right-thinking people about why we dwell so obsessively on the domestic problems of celebrities. It’s an issue we debate all the time at Newser, where we dwell with quite some verve on these matters: How much is too much? At Newser, mindful of right-thinking sensitivities, we provide a sliding bar that lets you emphasize the serious and consequential and minimize the meretricious and trivial—but almost no one chooses to do so. If there is reason to question the massive amount of celebrity coverage, there may be an even greater question about the coverage of would-be, or never-were, or used-to-almost-be celebrities—for instance, Barry Williams, who once played Greg Brady in The Brady Bunch, who, I read on Newser, has taken out a restraining order against a knife-wielding girlfriend. Now I suppose one thing we learn from Tiger Woods’ travails is that, »

One Hot Brady Mess!

10 September 2009 5:47 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

As anyone who’s ever turned on a TV knows, there’s lots of bad television out there. There’s even a lot of really bad television.

Very rarely has been there anything on television as bad as The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, a show that ran for a mere nine episodes in 1976-1977.

Consider:

The show was a typical 1970s song and dance variety show, but except for Brady mother Florence Henderson, none of the cast had any real experience, and in most cases, any real talent, for song and dance. Several cast members could barely carry a tune. One of the original Brady Bunch cast members, Eve Plumb, who played Jan, refused to participate, meaning the part had to be recast with an unfamiliar actress, later dubbed “Fake Jan.” Since the show was produced by Sid and Marty Krofft (of H.R. Pufnstuf children’s television fame), the sets »

The Brady Bunch Variety Hour: Susan Olsen Revisits One of the Worst TV Shows in History

1 September 2009 1:11 PM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

A few years after the end of The Brady Bunch, some of the castmembers reunited for an appearance on Donny & Marie, a popular variety show produced by Sid & Marty Krofft. The October 8, 1976 appearance was so successful that the Kroffts decided to offer the entire Brady cast their own song and dance show, The Brady Bunch Variety Hour.

What followed is one of the most bizarre television series in history. Actors Florence Henderson, Robert Reed, Barry Williams, Maureen McCormick, Christopher Knight, Susan Olsen, Mike Lookinland, and Ann B. Davis all signed on for the new show.

The strange part is that they weren't performing as themselves. The actors were playing their Brady characters. And though, the show required them to do a lot of singing and dancing, only Henderson and Williams had much serious experience doing that. »

(S08E01) Somewhere Sherwood Schwartz was smiling if he watched this season premiere of Monk. Or else he was calling his attorney to sue for copyright infringement. Marsha/Jan Lesbian Affair A 'Joke'

Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia on "The Brady Bunch," claims Eve Plumb, who played her sister Jan, is upset because McCormick claimed they had a lesbian affair on the set of the '70s sitcom. Brady Bunch 'Sisters' At War Over Scrapped Reunion

9 July 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Brady Bunch actress Eve Plumb has hit back at her former co-star Maureen McCormick after her one-time friend accused her of sabotaging a planned reunion.

McCormick, who played Marcia on the hit 1970s sitcom, recently claimed Plumb, who starred as her sister Jan, turned down the chance to reunite on TV - insisting her former pal can't forgive her for joking about their 'lesbian romance'.

McCormick made a gag about her relationship with Plumb last year - claiming the pair enjoyed a brief fling while filming the show.

She later insisted her comments were meant in jest - but stated Plum took offence and subsequently refused to appear on Oprah Winfrey's TV series.

The actress wrote on her Fancast.com Internet blog, "All of us said yes except for one person, Eve Plumb, who used to be my best friend but now apparently wants to distance herself from the show and, most troubling, from me.

"I have no idea why, unless she's mad at the joke I made a few years ago that we'd had a lesbian love affair. I made the crack to be funny - and for shock value. I'm sorry if she took offence."

Plumb's representatives have hit back at McCormick's claims - her agent , Mark Measures, tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, "No one from Oprah called. We haven't turned down anything. There is no feud." »

DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »

Gilligan's Island: TV Show Creator wants Michael Cera and Beyonce for New Movie

2 January 2009 5:08 PM, PST | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

Yet another classic television show, Gilligan's Island, may be headed for the big-screen. There've been numerous movie plans in the past will this one actually be made?

Gilligan's Island was created by Sherwood Schwartz (The Brady Bunch) and follows a diverse group of people who've been shipwrecked. Though there are only 98 episodes, the sitcom became incredibly popular in syndication and the characters have become a part of popular culture. The original castaways are Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells.

Most of the castaways reunited for different projects over the years, including three TV movies (Rescue from Gilligan's Island, The Castaways on Gilligan's Island, and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island), two animated series (The New Adventures of Gilligan and Gilligan's Planet), and guest-spots on shows like Alf, Baywatch, and Roseanne.

There's been talk of doing a big screen movie version »
