Short and sweet
gnok20024 October 2014
I am adding reviews for all films I've seen that so far lack one, at last I get the opportunity to recommend something, review follows... Made for the CFF (Childrens Film Foundation) by Fanfare, this is a short 50m comic tale of 3 kids and a couple of bickering ghosts who attempt to stop a property developer demolishing a house of historic interest, before the local council can list (preserve from tampering) the house; it's amusing, short and has many well known faces of British comedy, the director rather specialized in CFF adventures, good. As far as I know this is not available on commercial DVD, I obtained a collectors copy on DVD-r.

Slapstick comedy with added ghosts

GHOST OF A CHANCE is a gentle Children's Film Foundation comedy worth watching for the cast alone, as they've coerced various British comedy actors to appear in this one. The story, in which three kids are trying to save a derelict mansion from being bulldozed so they can turn it into a youth club - and are aided in their quest by Patricia Hayes - is very slight and easily forgotten as the focus of the film and majority of the scenes are about workmen being thwarted by mischievous spirits. Jimmy Edwards and Graham Stark are the 17th century ghosts, Ronnie Barker is the boss, and Terry Scott and Bernard Cribbins play the hapless employees. Not bad!

Warning: Spoilers
George Melies had virtually invented most of the trick shots used in this film in the 1890s. Graham Stark walking around with his head underneath his arm,and walking through walls. So I would have thought this all a bit passe even for young children in the 1960s.

The plot is basic and typical CFF. Nasty old property developers want to knock down this old pile and the intrepid children find every way they can, with the aid of ghosts,Jimmy Edwards and Graham Stark to defeat them.

This film is memorable not so much for the story but for the cast. A newsgathering of British comedy actors of the period. Apart from those mentioned there is.
