As a fan of the low budget exploitation films of the 60's, 70's and 80's I'm a massive fan of Herchell Gordon Lewis. Sure I like his gore films like "Blood Feast", "Two Thousand Maniacs" and "The Gore Gore Girls" the most, but I also enjoy a few of his non gore efforts like "Something Weird" and "She Devils on Wheels" quite a bit. Sure his films are filled with technical errors, but I still enjoy them because of the energy he pours into his films, his ability to deliver a film with little fat and in the case of his gore films, his willingness to break taboos and create a new genre in the process. Still, as much as I like his work in general, many of his films are complete crap with no entertainment value whatsoever. One of those films is "A Taste of Blood". With a title like "A Taste of Blood", one would expect one of the gore films that made him famous, but its not. Its very light on the gore, down to about the level of a mainstream 80's or 90's slasher film, maybe even a little lower. Herchell Gordon Lewis, you are the Godfather of Gore! What happened? To make matters even worse what blood is show is pretty standard stuff and the killings are pretty dull. The lack of red stuff isn't the only problem facing "A Taste of Blood", it also goes on for a ridiculous about of time, almost two hours! It's rare for an exploitation film to work after 105 minuets or so and this is no exception to the rule, way too much of this is made up of pointless padding. Combine all that with the problems typical of Lewis's films (bad acting, amateurish writing, ineffective music, etc) you have one certified stinker of a film.
