Sex & Nudity

  • Sex is never actually depicted on screen but is implied.
  • There is a scene of a party where the guests are completely nude. This scene is the main reason for the movie's R rating. Depending on which version you see, the nudity varies.
  • A woman is raped, we see brief glimpses of a man taking control of her and her disturbed reactions.
  • In the unedited version, there is fairly extensive full frontal and rear female nudity, and some brief male nudity.
  • The American theatrical release version only shows split-second instances of female breast and rear nudity are visible.
  • Some verbal insinuations for sexual references.

Violence & Gore

  • The opening sequence is composed of disorienting camerawork and distortions of a human face, could be unsettling.
  • There is a mildly graphic scene of facial plastic surgery, more implicit and hidden with camera angles.
  • Murder is discussed, though there is no actual blood or gore in the film.

Profanity

  • About two uses of damn.
  • Two uses of hell.
  • One use of shut up, milder insults like "two-face" and "piker".
  • Very mild.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • There are several scenes where people drink alcohol, and two scenes where guests become intoxicated, one of which resembles a 'bacchanalia'.
  • Smoking is depicted often.
  • The smoking of marijuana is implied in one scene, drugs are used for medical purposes

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The end of the film is very disturbing.
  • This is a very depressing movie.
  • The nature of the film is quite intense, especially the title sequence which features unusual camera work with close-up distortions of various body parts.

Violence & Gore

  • There is a scene where a man is tied down to a bed, gagged, and tries to move and scream loudly while a priest reads him his last rites and he is suddenly about to be killed, a fairly disturbing sequence.
  • Finally, the man is killed with a cranial drill, offscreen but still audible and disturbing.
