  • Continuity: It takes a while for character names and back histories to settle during the first season and there are many inconsistencies.

  • Continuity: The color of a phaser beam depends on the weapon's setting ("stun" or "kill") but the colors are inconsistent between episodes.

  • Continuity: The Star Trek Universe is inconsistent in its use of measurement standards. In "Star Trek: Obsession (#2.13)" (1967), Ensign Garrovick describes a gaseous creature as being "several cubic meters" in size, but his distance as "about twenty feet away". These discrepancies continue through all the Star Trek series and movies.

  • Continuity: The design of the Enterprise model is different in some exterior shots of the ship. Noticeable differences are that the engine nacelles have a differently designed rear and front. In some shots the front of the nacelle does not have the spinning light, it is just a brown circle. Also in the rear shots the back of the nacelle has many little holes whereas in other shots it is solid. The reason for this is some of the shots are stock footage used from the second Star Trek pilot "Where No Man has Gone Before". Since then the design of the ship had changed, however the stock shots were used many times in the actual series, hence the mistakes.

  • Continuity: The deck locations for Kirk's Quarters, Sickbay and Transporter Room vary (usually between decks 4-7) throughout the series.

  • Revealing mistakes: There are numerous instances where the flimsy nature of the set can be seen when an actor/actress bumps into a wall and the wall bends with him/her.

  • Continuity: Numerous instances where Kirk orders phasers fired, but the animation is that of the photon torpedoes.

  • Revealing mistakes: In almost all of the hand-to-hand combat shots, with the exception of close-up shots, the characters fighting are very obvious stunt doubles.

  • Continuity: In the first few episodes, the color of the uniforms worn by members of the Enterprise crew differ from week to week.

  • Continuity: The rank structure for female crew members contains a number of inconsistencies. Uhura, presumably a graduate of Starfleet Academy but without an advanced degree, is a full lieutenant, but Helen Noel, a full medical doctor of psychiatry, Christine Chapel, a registered nurse, and Tina Lawton, a yeoman third class, are all ensigns, two ranks below Uhura.
