Author: TimothyFarrell from Worcester, MA

This one shocked me simply for the fact it was a reasonably well made Ray Dennis Steckler film. I know (and love) the eccentric auteur for his legendary bad films "The Incredibly Strange Creatures ..." and "Rat Pfink a Boo Boo", so I was surprised that "The Thrill Killers" is a tense and taut little pulp thriller. Sure, it includes the usual shortcomings of a Steckler film. He seems to be juggling multiple story lines and than suddenly deciding to tie them in together at the end. Plus, some of the acting is pretty goofy. Plus, several sequences try your belief (most notably the man escaping on a horse from a police riding a motorcycle).

Yet somehow he manages to create some suspense. The sequence in the diner and especially the one where the escaped cons lunatics chase Carolyn Brandt create some tension. This is probably due to the general sleaziness and the absolute remorseless attitude of the serial killers. Plus, Steckler usually manages to create a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere, and that contributes to the nightmare. Not a masterpiece, but quite the pleasant surprise. Fans of "The Sadist" are advised to check this out. (6/10)
