A Policemans lot is Not A Happy One
malcolmgsw7 February 2010
Glyn Houston has a very hard time in this.He plays a Detective who is taken off the murder case and put out on gardening leave. He is getting divorced, and this will hinder his police career, this is 1962.To make matters worse he is imprisoned in a farmhouse by a gang which includes as Thitd Villain,Michael Caine with an awful Irish accent. This all ends up with a shootout in the farm yard which resembles Gunfight At The OK Coral. To make matters worse he clearly lusts after the local barmaid but his sense of proprietary clearly douses his desires. All in all a very entertaining entry in this series. The strong casts are also the backbone of this series

Solo for Sparrow
Prismark107 August 2021
Michael Caine's Irish accent is as good as his Geordie accent in Get Carter.

Caine has a bit part as a gang member who abduct an elderly woman who worked in a jewellery shop.

They get her keys in order to carry out the raid. The woman is later found dead.

Inspector Sparrow investigates but he soon finds that his boss wants to call in Scotland Yard.

Undeterred Sparrow is suspicious of Reynolds the jewellery shop owner.

He used to lock up and until he had heart trouble when he passed the duty on to his employee.

Sparrow observes that Reynolds plays a hard game of tennis and his doctor in unaware of any heart problems.

However the members of the gang are no slouches. They figure that Sparrow is nosing about.

A nice gritty B movie short. There is a hard edged shootout at the end. Sparrow is going through a divorce and at the time that could be a death knell when it came to a promotion.

Sparrow was certainly solo in this one. Maybe the other boys in blue could had shown more support.

Pilot for a series that never happened?
lucyrfisher7 April 2022
This makes an excellent little British noir/crime B movie. Sparrow has a back story (he's getting divorced) and a future (will he marry the barmaid?). Was it a pilot for a series that never happened?

Great locations and British character actors. An elderly jewellery shop assistant is kidnapped for her keys, but unfortunately she is put in the care of Michael Caine who doesn't know how to look after her. But it's not so simple - this is Edgar Wallace.

Nadja Regin seems to be playing both sides against the middle. Unfortunately it is hard to make out what she's saying, making the twisty plot even more difficult to follow.

That old-fashioned farm turns up in several contemporary cop thrillers and Wallace episodes. I wonder what has happened to those beautiful old barns?

Spot Benedict Cumberbatch's mother (Wanda Ventham) in a milk bar that actually sells milk.
