James McTeigue Interview, Ninja Assassin

26 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | MoviesOnline.ca | See recent MoviesOnline news »

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.

As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.

McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City. …

James McTeigue's 'The Raven' to Mix Real Edgar Allan Poe and Fiction

24 November 2009 12:22 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

James McTeigue is currently developing "The Raven", a fictional story about what would happen if a serial killer challenged poet Edgar Allan Poe to solve a series of killings inspired by his own stories. On Saturday, November 21, the director sat down with Sci Fi Wire to talk about how the famous author and his works inspire McTeigue's thriller film.

"'The Raven', 'Tell-Tale Heart', 'Premature Burial', 'Murders in the Rue Morgue'," McTeigue mentioned several Poe's poems that will give ideas for the film's murders. "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."

Though the film is a complete fiction, McTeigue has planned to present the film's major character complete with the real details. "It's a total fiction, but obviously Poe is, like, a well-known and much-beloved character," he explained. "People know a lot about him, the way he was a bit of a rascal, …

Quote the Raven While Tied to a Chair - Poe and Torture Porn?

23 November 2009 3:54 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Edgar Allan Poe and torture porn. Two things I never gave much thought about going together. However, I guess if you really think about it, it does make some kind of sense.

Director James McTeigue sat down with SciFiWire for an interview about his latest film, the very violent Ninja Assassin, and he offered this on his upcoming remake of Poe's The Raven:

"It's sort of Se7en meets a series of Poe stories," he tells Sci Fi Wire. "It's set in 1850s Baltimore, and it's about creating Poe's version of 1850s Baltimore, him moving through it. So it has a lot of the Poe stories interwoven into it." Referenced films will include "'The Raven,' 'Tell-Tale Heart,' 'Premature Burial,' 'Murders in the Rue Morgue,'" added McTeigue. "There's a whole lot of them. It's actually a pretty cool concept."

Poe Goes "Torture Porn" In The Raven ?

23 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

SciFi Wire recently spoke to V For Vendetta director James McTeigue while out promoting Ninja Assassin and the filmmaker brought up his next movie The Raven , which we first reported about back here and had McTiegue talk to us about here . Considering the grisly way that people met their ends in Poe's stories, the article goes on to imply that he's the original "torture porn" author. (Let's not be ridiculous though.) The Raven posits a story about what would happen if Poe were faced with the very murders he wrote about. In the movie, at the end of Poe's life, a serial killer challenges him to solve a series of killings inspired by his own fiction. "The Raven, Tell-Tale Heart, Premature Burial, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Cask of Amontillado" …

Scary Movies 3 and other NYC fright-film fests

23 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango got the scoop that Manhattan’s Film Society of Lincoln Center will present a third Scary Movies festival next month at the Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street, upper level). It’s one of a trio of genre-centric showcases hitting New York-area revival houses in time for Halloween.

Scary Movies 3 hasn’t had exact dates confirmed yet, but we hear that among the movies to be presented on the Walter Reade’s big screen are Peter Jackson’s Dead Alive, Colin Eggleston’s original Aussie chiller Long Weekend and Jerzy Skolimowski’s odd and obscure 1978 film The Shout. Also part of the lineup will be a cult-classic 1980s film that, we’re told, was remade in the last few years (that really narrows it down!). Keep an eye on the Film Society website for more details to appear soon.

Go gentle into that good night

7 May 2009 9:57 PM, PDT | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

I know it is coming, and I do not fear it, because I believe there is nothing on the other side of death to fear. I hope to be spared as much pain as possible on the approach path. I was perfectly content before I was born, and I think of death as the same state. What I am grateful for is the gift of intelligence, and for life, love, wonder, and laughter. You can't say it wasn't interesting. My lifetime's memories are what I have brought home from the trip. I will require them for eternity no more than that little souvenir of the Eiffel Tower I brought home from Paris.

I don't expect to die anytime soon. But it could happen this moment, while I am writing. I was talking the other day with Jim Toback, a friend of 35 years, and the conversation turned to our deaths, as it always does. …

Poe and Blackwood terrors on the New York stage

28 January 2009 7:08 AM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango got word on a couple of frightful theatrical experiences on the New York stage this winter. The dark visions of two classically chilling authors, Edgar Allan Poe and Algernon Blackwood, are being brought to life in separate New York productions.

To celebrate the bicentennial of Poe’s birth, the critically acclaimed Radiotheatre is performing an ongoing series entitled Sundays With Poe, currently running through April 26 at 2 p.m. on the last Sunday of each month at Manhattan’s Under St. Mark’s (94 St. Mark’s Place). Each show presents three to four stories by the master essayed by the unique company, which uses traditional storytelling techniques along with music and sound effects to stimulate the audience’s imagination, much like the radio shows of old. Radiotheatre founder and 30-year theater veteran Dan Bianchi enthusiastically tells Fango, “I’ve had a bust of Poe on my shelf for the past 35 years. …
