Three friends accidentally drive into a lake during a car ride. Mary survives but has become a recluse and does not feel safe anymore. She moves to a town to play the organ for a church, even though she is not religious. After moving into an apartment she meets John, from another apartment, who obviously has a sexual desire for her. Mary sees another man in the hallway of the house she is staying in. She mentions this man to various people but they do not believe her. Whilst trying on a dress in a shop, an odd thing happens. Everything has suddenly goes quiet and nobody can see her anymore. When she goes outside to get a drink a man startles her. A doctor sees the incident and takes her to his office. There, Mary confesses to her social phobia. After leaving the doctor's office, she still sees the strange man and ends up wandering into an abandoned carnival. It scares her and she leaves to go back to the apartment she is staying in. Mary is told to leave her job as the church organist after she plays a creepy tune. John continues to pursuade her to go out with him and she finally agrees. At a bar he gets very drunk and they go back to the apartments. He tries to have sex with Mary but she screams after seeing the strange man in her mirror. John leaves her apartment, thinking she is crazy. After leaving the apartments the next day, Mary starts to see more bizarre things. The strange man is everywhere and she sees other ghostly figures dancing together. She drives far away, back to the carnival. Here, she sees herself dancing with the ghosts. She has finally embraced death. All three friends were killed in the crash.
