NOTES
The transfer was supervised by 'Robert Wise' (who introduces it on the disc) from a newly manufactured 65 mm interpositive made directly from the original 65 mm camera negative. The soundtrack has been digitally matrixed for Dolby Surround from the original 6-track magnetic soundtrack masters.

NOTES
Phil Kim (kimp@marcus.its.rpi.edu) comments: "An insert from the $125 Criterion disc states: '... from a new 35 mm internegative, struck from a reconstructed 70 mm negative. The film-to-tape transfer was supervised by co-director 'Robert Wise' . The reconstructed 70 mm negative was made under the supervision of Dick May of Turner Entertainment. The sound was digitally remastered from a 4-track 35mm magnetic track, produced from a 6-track 70mm magnetic soundtrack.' In short, I think the MGM/UA version has punchier color and slightly sharper images, whereas the Criterion is more film-like. In some intense scenes, the MGM/UA disc exhibits more video noise than the Criterion (video noise is almost non-existent here). I think the majority will prefer the MGM/UA presentation, but those who like film-like transfer (i.e., those who prefer Criterion's 2001: A Space Odyssey over the 25th Anniversary MGM/UA) should choose Criterion."
