Edgar Wallace Meets Carry on
malcolmgsw9 February 2010
There is a bizarre scene about two thirds the way through this film. One minute we are in the middle of this thriller and the next we have a shower seen with Barbara Windsor. The doorbell rings ,she wraps a towel around herself, goes to the front door and who is there but Kenneth Cope.He is trying to find her flat mate.Funnily enough a few years later the same scene would be replicated in one of the Carry Ons with Cope posing as a female nurse, rooming with and taking the bra off Windsor. There are lots of familiar faces in this ,Albert Levien,Leslie Sands, who was starring as Inspector Cluff on TV ,and Gladys Henson, who played Jack Warners husband in The Blue Lamp. All the usual familiar ingredients in this entertaining Wallace thriller.

Worth it for the atmosphere

The beautiful Barbara Shelley is secretary to a dodgy businessman who has offices in a modern 60s building. She herself has a very expensive looking flat with a baroque Salomonic column, complete with vine leaves, in the middle of the living room.

One day another pretty young girl turns up - her sister has killed herself, after withdrawing £7,000 in cash, which is now nowhere to be found. She'd talked of investing it. Can the businessman, Paul Heinrich, explain?

The strangely impassive Miss Halston has only just heard of the death of her sister - she's been touring Europe as a fashion model. She's nice looking, but hardly in the model class. Both she and Barbara Shelley are dressed, and act, as if they were 50. It was an odd fashion moment! In about five years time they would have to relax and act as swinging, groovy chicks.

The plot thickens, involving an ex-con and Kenneth Cope as a sponging step-son. Barbara Windsor makes a brief appearance, and the lovely Gladys Henson cameos as a landlady.

The investigating officers obviously think they are funny - or else the director does - but they aren't.

Some interesting points, but too slow.

Carol Halston is convinced that ruthless businessman, Paul Heindrik, has something do with the death of her sister, who drew her life savings out, and planned to invest it with him.

I have to start by saying, what an utterly boring episode this was, it was an interesting beginning, and seemed to be going somewhere, but it just falls flat, with too much dialogue, and incredibly long scenes.

Those on the case seemed to miss what was glaringly obvious, and right in front of their eyes, how nobody managed to put two and two together is beyond me.

It should have become more interesting when the murder occurs, it doesn't, the only scene of any possible interest involves Barbara Windsor, it seemed so incredibly random, when she opened that door I was half expecting Charles Hawtrey to burst in shouting....'ohhhh halooooooo.'

When I read the plot and saw the cast, I had real hopes for this one, it wasn't bad, but it should have been so much better.

6/10.

Death Trap

Paul Heindrik is a dodgy businessman who might have bumped off Carol Halston's sister.

Her sister withdrew £7000 before her death which Heindrik invested. Her death was regarded as a suicide.

Ross Williams used to work for Heindrik's company and went to jail for embezzlement. He is now blackmailing his old boss and suddenly gets run over in the middle of the night.

Derek Maitland is Heindrik's stepson who is trying to sponge for him but the stepdad is not in a generous mood.

Derek decides to help Carol. The police examine the death of Ross Williams. The car that killed him had been hired by Heindrik but it was later reported stolen.

There is a sudden appearance from Barbara Windsor in the shower. The plot is a bit of a carry on with Heindrik being a too obvious villain and no one should take a drink from him.
