A remarkable film about the US, post-war Japan, and a GI caught in the middle
mlbroberts22 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
And very well acted. Part love story between an American GI MP and Japanese performer; part crime story as the MP is wrongly accused of murdering a Japanese boy in what was really an accident; part political quagmire as Japanese people go after "American killer" and the US Army and diplomatic corps try to keep the incident from blowing relations with post-war Japan apart.

Richard Long is perfect as the man caught in the middle in a lonely fight for the truth to save himself. Michi Kobe is remarkable as the Japanese woman he is deeply in love with, and she is deeply in love with him, despite momentary doubt about his innocence. Despite everything he tries to do - and that includes running to find the witness who is lying about the incident and striking a deal with an American who wants to smuggle him out of Japan - nothing works, and in the end he has to give himself up to his fate in a Japanese court. We never know what that fate is. In the end, he is surrendering, and the woman he loves is waving him goodbye.
