- Ellen Burton (Susan Hayward), a dedicated nurse, arrives in the Belgian Congo n 1907 and persuades animal hunter and guide John Douglas (Robert Mitchum) to lead and accompany her on a trip into the interior to find an old colleague, and they discover has died. When the son of a native chief is badly mauled by a lion, he is tended by her, but the tribe witch doctors take the boy away. However, the chief summons her when the witch doctors fail, and she wins his confidence.
