Originally a 1925 novel by Edgar Wallace called 'The Gaunt Stranger', he then adapted it for the stage under this title with Gerald du Maurier who was unfortunately too well-known to be able to fool the audience as a 'master of disguise'. The play opened in London's Wyndham Theatre on May 4 1926 and ran for 410 performances.
Passed by the British Board of Film Censors with a "U" certificate on 30 May 1952. First released by British Lion in December 1952. British Lion decided to re-release The Ringer in June 1963 as a supporting feature for their latest Steve Reeves epic Duel of the Titans (1961).
