(1937/1952) Two classic MGM adaptations of the rousing Anthony Hope novel. In the 1937 The Prisoner of Zenda Ronald Colman plays the double role of the frivolous King Rudolph and his identical cousin, the stalwart Rudolph Rassendyll who takes his place in the coronation ceremony when the King is laid low by a conspiracy to put his younger brother (Raymond Massey) on the throne. Madeleine Carroll, C. Aubrey Smith, Mary Astor, David Niven, and a delightfully flamboyant Douglas Fairbanks Jr. co-star in the handsome David O. Selznick production. Stewart Granger takes the lead in the lavish Technicolor 1952 remake of The Prisoner of Zenda, co-starring Deborah Kerr, Louis Calhern, Jane Greer, Lewis Stone, and James Mason.
