What was fresh and new in Chevalier's FOLLIES BERGERE in the early thirties gets a stale second run around in this remake. Kaye plays an entertainer who does impressions - one of which is Henri Duran, a businessman, whom he resembles. Duran is also a flirt who neglects his wife. Well, you can figure this one out. Kaye the entertainer is hired to impersonate the businessman and pays better attention to his wife. When the businessman returns unexpectedly to a soiree where the entertainer is holding forth impersonating him, the fun begins. But it's not fresh fun - it's stale fun. Kaye is fine in the dual role - he won a Golden Globe award for it, but it's not really a funny film. He does have a typical mad Kaye moment in the Popo The Puppet number as he mangles long names of animals and flowers. Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine, wrote four totally forgettable songs for the film. It was Oscar nommed in the Art Direction and Scoring categories - both competent submissions. The only fun here really is spotting and following a dubbed Gwen Verdon as the lead specialty dancer in the big production number a short way into the film and the finale. Pleasant diversion.
