New Year's Eve fun: Share your favorite film and TV drunk scenes

2 hours ago | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

The ball is set to drop in just a matter of hours, PopWatchers! So I can only imagine that more than a few of you are preparing to channel your inner Frank the Tanks this holiday. (Now I believe it is my duty to warn you that streaking will probably be looked down upon by your respective towns, as well as your respective sober selves when you see the inevitable embarrassing pics.) And as I begin to line up my own champagne and wine bottles to celebrate the new year, I'm reminded of those in film and on TV who willingly put themselves in humiliating, »

TV franchises offer up last minute Christmas gift ideas

22 December 2009 10:01 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Norad is already tracking Santa Claus and his airborne reindeer team as it heads south from the North Pole and ignores boring Canada to give delightful Christmas presents to all the good American boys and girls. Fortunately, the U.S. Air Force apologized for that anti-aircraft missile that almost nicked Dasher. They sent a fruit basket and everything.

The point is that you don't have much time to snag holiday toys for your TV fan friends and those few kids you actually like. Fortunately, there still some popular toys out there that can serve multiple gift giving purposes.

The I Love Lucy Barbie from Mattel (right) sells for $45, so it might be more appropriate for an adult toy collector (an adult who collects TV-related toys, I mean). But, a Barbie is a Barbie, and few girls would turn one down -- even if it features Lucy Ricardo auditioning for a »

Fox Hosts ‘Simpsons Scavenger Hunt’

3 November 2009 9:15 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Far-gone are the days when networks held enough power and importance to have TV crossovers and intermixing story lines, much like the days when George Reeves would pop up on I Love Lucy or story lines interweave between Buffy and Angel. Fox seems to be the only network with interest in doing such stunts, as Family Guy’s Stewie popped up on an episode of Bones.

Well, it looks like Fox is doing it once again with an announcement for a Simpsons on-air scavenger hunt in celebrating 20 years of broadcasting TV’s favorite animated family. In a press release, the network announces that it will start on November 9th, and go for an entire week.

Fox is paying “homage” to 20 years of television’s favorite yellow family with the network’s first-ever on-air scavenger hunt. Beginning Monday, Nov. 9 and continuing through Friday, Nov. 13, fans can watch Fox each night to find Simpsons shout-outs, »

[DVD Review] Natural Born Killers: The Director’s Cut

29 October 2009 2:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Natural Born Killers is the black sheep of the Oliver Stone filmography. Though it has received some critical acclaim, it has never received the same treatment as Stone’s more prestigious films like Platoon, Born on The Fourth of July and JFK. This comes from a host of factors. First, at the time of its release, the movie ironically became the primary target for a movement against violence in television and film. Second, and more importantly, it doesn’t really feel like an Oliver Stone film. Stone’s films are typically epic and historic, larger than life in their content and the lessons they teach. Nbk is larger than life too, but in a very different way. It attacks our sensibility about culture and the way we sense things. It tests our understanding of good and evil by proposing that no one is good.

The film follows Micky (Woody Harrelson »

'The Vampire Diaries' recap: The secret and Damon are out

9 October 2009 5:08 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It looks like this show is about to get really, really good. Everything we wanted to happen is: Elena has pieced together the truth about Stefan (cue the flashback montage!), Bonnie is ready to accept who she is (enter Grandma Jasmine Guy, which made me feel as old as the first time I heard someone say they were born in the '80s), and Vicki should be dead (drink, Damon, drink!). Yes! So, we knew Damon would get out of that basement dungeon sooner rather than later. This show could not survive without his biting dark wit, even if Stefan »

On TV: Modern Family

23 September 2009 1:10 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

"Unconventional" family units are the most reliable hallmark of the modern sitcom, like it or not. I Love Lucy's interracial marriage led to the single-parent bliss of My Three Sons, which beget The Brady Bunch's sprawling step-family, which led to the tense divorce situation of One Day at a Time, which went on to nearly kill us with that horrible dead parents show On Our Own. The next chapter, ABC's Modern Family, gives us both a gay couple and a May-December second marriage, and it may represent a glimmer of ingenuity in the joyless tundra of new comedy in 2009. »

I Love Lucy: The Very Brief Reunion of Lucy Ricardo and Fred Mertz

22 July 2009 7:17 AM, PDT | TVSeriesFinale.com | See recent TVSeriesFinale news »

After six seasons on the air, the hugely successful I Love Lucy sitcom ended. The stars had tired of the weekly grind but transitioned to the more expensive The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show specials. A baker's dozen of those were produced over three years. By the end, the writers had run dry and the marriage of Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball had fallen apart. The day after the production wrapped, Ball filed for divorce.

Before the show ended, it was proposed that the Mertz's, played by William Frawley and Vivian Vance, continue in their own spin-off. The two had never liked each other off-screen but Frawley realized that the show could be very lucrative and agreed. Vance didn't want any part of it and refused.

Sadly, the end of the specials was the last time that the four actors would ever play their iconic characters. Arnaz continued to »

"Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg" recognizes a forgotten TV pioneer

20 July 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Quick — who was the first woman to appear in a network sitcom?

No, not Lucille Ball, but that would’ve been my guess.

Here’s a hint. She also won the first Emmy for Best Actress. I’ll even show you a picture.

Still no clue, I bet. Her name is Gertrude Berg. Wait, who?

Exactly. That’s why Aviva Kempner’s new documentary, Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, is so important.

Berg was sort of the Oprah of her era — and she paved the way for women in the entertainment industry. Her radio show, The Goldbergs, premiered the week after the 1929 stock market crash and every day for 17 years, Berg rose at 6 a.m., wrote that day’s script, then went to the studio to produce the show and perform her role, Molly Goldberg.

In 1949, Berg brought The Goldbergs to television, where it was the first character-driven domestic sitcom. (When the »

By

Allen Gardner

Do The Right Thing: 20th Anniversary Edition (Universal) Spike Lee’s groundbreaking fable about race relations in an ethnically mixed Brooklyn neighborhood during a sweltering New York summer remains as potent, timely and prescient as it was in 1989. Lee is among the cast, which also includes John Turturro, Danny Aiello, Samuel L. Jackson, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, and Rosie Perez (to name a few), that provide the tableaux-like framework for this stunning work. Criminally ignored by Oscar (it wasn't even nominated for Best Picture, but did garner nods for Supporting Actor Danny Aiello and Lee’s screenplay), it endures as a timeless classic. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Lee, Ernest Dickerson, Wynn Thomas, Joie Lee; Documentary; Deleted and extended scenes; Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.

Yoo-Hoo! Mrs. Goldberg's Hitting the Big Screen

9 July 2009 4:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Did you know that Lucille Ball was not the first woman of sitcom television land? In fact, there was another who not only came before the famous redhead, but who should also be counted as one of the pioneers behind the screen? No? I didn't either.

Enter Gertrude Berg, who is the focus of Aviva Kempner's new documentary Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, which is hitting theaters this week in New York City before heading to DC on the 17th and La on the 24th. This isn't your heart-tugging, dramatic art doc, but rather a straight-forward account of someone we should know because, frankly, her success was impressive. (That picture to the right -- that's Berg with her scripts.)

Turns out that before I Love Lucy, there was a show radio show that hit television called The Goldbergs. It was Berg's own creation -- a brainchild she shopped around herself, wrote, »

The Lucille Ball Specials: Lucy Gets Lucky/Three for Two - DVD Review

2 July 2009 6:51 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Legendary comedienne Lucille Ball co-starred with some equally legendary co-stars in some comedy specials for CBS in the 1970s. Great ones Dean Martin and Jackie Gleason join the redheaded funny lady, but the results are dated though it.s good to see them being released from the vaults. Lucille Ball is nothing short of a legend. I Love Lucy is a comic wonder and just mentioning the name of that show will illicit fond and funny memories from those that have watched it (much the same with the Andy Griffith Show). She had just finished her CBS show Here.s Lucy (1968-1974) and next on her plate was a series of .one-off. specials for the network. In the first »

Isla Fisher Talks Confessions of a Shopaholic

Isla Fisher racked up the credit card bills as Rebecca Bloomwood in the romantic comedy Confessions of a Shopaholic, which was just released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 23. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment recently provided us with an interview Fisher gave, and here's what she had to say.

Are you a Shopaholic?

Isla Fisher: No I am not a Shopaholic, I don't shop very well at all. I tend to buy things which end up not being quite right - whether it is a clothing item that does not match anything in my wardrobe, or some cooking apparatus that is utterly useless. I am just not that good at it.

Are you an impulse buyer?

Isla Fisher: I usually go into a store with a mission. My idea of a fun thing to do would not be to go to a mall and shopping.

[DVD Review] TV Sets: Forever Funny

27 May 2009 11:44 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

TV Sets: Forever Funny fetches a brilliant collection of shows to tickle the funny bone as a sampling of the comedic programs CBS has put out over time. Any collection that features Taxi, Cheers, The Odd Couple and Frasier is doing something right of the comedy front – but that’s only half the issue. Along with choosing the funniest shows possible, the funniest episodes of the series ought be selected as well. Instead, in an obvious attempt to encourage folks to start at the beginning, CBS has chosen the pilot episodes of each series. Once again, like in the TV Sets: Action Packed DVD, pilots are great for hooking an audience when the show is brand new – but these are classic shows that your average television viewer has seen at least a few episodes of.

There are two things more puzzling than the steadfast notion that the pilot episodes were »

DVD Playhouse—May 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Paramount Centennial Collection Paramount Studios releases two more classic titles from its library on special edition DVD: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance is John Ford’s last masterpiece (although he would go on to direct two more very good films) from 1962: about an Eastern lawyer (James Stewart) who travels west only to find primal brutality in the form of sadistic bandit Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin, great as always) and pragmatic brutality in local rancher Tom Doniphon (John Wayne), each two sides of a coin that represent a way of life slowly dying out as Stewart’s modern brand of civilization tames the West. A perfect film, period. Howard HawksEl Dorado is essentially a remake of his earlier classic Rio Bravo, with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and a young James Caan as lawmen joining forces against corrupt cattle barons. Great fun. Two disc sets. »
