If you’re remotely familiar with the man John Barrowman is off-screen, then you’re no doubt aware that he’s unashamedly a huge comic book geek. Given that, you’d have to imagine how getting to portray the character of Malcolm Merlyn across five years on hit television series such as Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow had to be a dream come true for him. What’s more is that he actually got to flesh out the backstory of his onscreen counterpart not long ago with Arrow: The Dark Archer, a comic he co-wrote with his sister, Carole.
So, if you enjoyed that or any other past collaborations by the Barrowman siblings, then you should be pleased to learn that they’ll soon be re-teaming for Cursed, a new venture brought to us by Legendary Comics. What’s more is that they’ve brought a friend...

Legendary Comics yesterday announced during its Awesome Con panel that actor John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Torchwood, Arrow) has teamed with his sister and writing partner Carole Barrowman (Torchwood) and graphic novelist and television writer Erika Lewis (Game of Shadows, Firebrand: The Initiation of Natali Presano) to co-create Cursed: an exciting new comic book series that sees Celtic lore masterfully collide with a modern day anti-hero.
"We’ve always wanted to write a story that pulls together our love of history, our Scottish heritage, and our love of sci-fi and the supernatural. Mix these all together and Cursed was born," said John Barrowman.
Carole Barrowman, John’s sister and longtime writing partner, added: “The three of us have been Cursed for a while… and loving every minute of it. We’ve had a great time playing with all the ways we can bring poor Charlie to his knees, and, of course,...

Producer Sam Goldwyn thought Anthony Kimmins's tale of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion was about a lovable Scots terrier. Frankly, it might as well have been

"Bonnie Prince Charlie was one of those huge florid extravaganzas that reek of disaster from the start," star David Niven admitted. Halfway through the nine-month shoot, Niven cabled producer Sam Goldwyn: "I have now worked every day for five months on this picture and nobody can tell me how the story ends stop advise." Goldwyn couldn't help: according to Niven's biographer, Sheridan Morley, he thought the movie was called "Charlie Bonnie", and was "apparently under the mistaken impression that...

My friend the actor John Forrest, who has died aged 80, combined a distinguished film career with work as a stage magician. He had his first success as a child actor, in David Lean's classic movie Great Expectations (1946), as the "pale young gentleman" – the young Herbert Pocket.
Known later for his many supporting roles playing very "British" characters such as Grassy Green in Very Important Person (1961), he was in fact born in the Us, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His English mother, an artist, had married an American lawyer, and when the marriage broke up after a few years, she brought John and his sister to England where they lived in the village of Cookham, Berkshire. Their neighbours were the painter Stanley Spencer and his equally eccentric brother, Horace, who taught John magic.
Following his early film success, John acted alongside such distinguished actors as David Niven, in Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948), Richard Attenborough,...
