The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will. Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22. Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books. »

Helen Mirren and Pete Postlethwaite have signed on to join the cast of Brighton Rock, the new adaptation of the Graham Greene novel that stars Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough. The book was, of course, previously filmed back in 1947 with a young Richard 'Dickie' Attenborough as baby-faced gangster Pinkie. Riley now takes that role; Andrea Riseborough is Rose, the waitress he marries because she could (unknowingly) destroy his alibi for his crimes. We're guessing that Mirren is Ida and Postlethwaite Fred Hale, the salesman linked to Pinkie's gang and its former leader, with the action this time set in 1964 instead of 1939 (cue Quadrophenia-style Mods?).Roland Joffe is directing, with filming due to start in October. With two of Britain's most accomplished actors now onboard, this is looking better by the day. »

The first time Greene's book was turned into a movie the action took place in 1939 and at a time when gangsters were a different cut than the ones found today. However, the new Brighton Rock's action won't be taking place modern day; instead the filmmakers have chosen to set it in 1964. The '47 movie is considered a classic British crime noir film but in America it isn't as well-known having »

Andrea Riseborough has joined Sam Riley in Brighton Rock, BBC Films' adaptation of the Graham Greene novel. This is, of course, the second time Greene's crime classic has been brought to the screen, with Richard Attenborough making such a memorable turn as sinewy, sinister small-town hoodlum Pinkie Brown in the 1947 version. This time around hoodlum honours go to Riley, with Riseborough (best known for Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky and telly period drama The Devil's Whore) playing the waitress who blackmails him into marrying her.Brighton Rock marks the directorial debut of Rowan (son of Roland) Joffé, up until now best known for his 28 Weeks Later screenplay. Filming starts this autumn.Riseborough, meanwhile, is next up in another literary adaption, appearing alongside Keira Knightley in Mark Romanek's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. Indie Roundup reviews the past week of news from the independent film community and provides a peek at what's coming soon.
Openings. This weekend will finally see the release of Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, an extraordinary, ticking time bomb of a movie. Michelle Pfeiffer returns to the screen in Stephen Frears' "scandalous romp" Cheri. The very timely Iranian tale The Stoning of Soraya M., which just played the Los Angeles Film Festival, should ignite further discussion. Afghan Star features four women who (literally) risk everything in a televised singing contest.
Box Office. Woody Allen's Whatever Works performed just fine, pulling in $29,574 per-screen at nine locations. The re-issue of 1947's Brighton Rock (a very good film starring Richard Attenborough as a small-time hood) drew $10,626 at one theater; Nazi zombie flick Dead Snow scared up $5,363 in business. Several films expanded: Duncan Jones' Moon to 21 theaters ($8,541 per screen), Francis Ford Coppola »
