This movie perfectly exemplifies one of MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer's pet theories about guaranteeing a film's box office success: "Nothing beats a crying scene with a child actor for tugging at the audience's heart-strings!"
When the train station ticket agent tells Patricia there is an Egypt, New Jersey (and there is a sign at the train station there), it is fictitious. However there is a New Egypt, NJ--a small town in Ocean County. Never populated by more than a few thousand, it was a major stop for passenger trains on the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1979.
The Bible verse Patricia puts her finger on and reads at the orphanage is Matthew 2:13. The second verse she picks after Jim loses his job is 1 Timothy 6:12. The third verse she picks at Mr. Marvin's house is Exodus 22:22. The fourth and final verse is John 11:25.
