The forgotten films of British director James Whale, remembered today for his groundbreaking Hollywood horror films, including “Frankenstein,” “The Invisible Man,” and “Bride of Frankenstein,” as well as Ian McKellen’s portrayal of him in “Gods and Monsters,” will be on display at New York City’s Film Forum during a one-week, 15-film retrospective starting today. In a New York Times piece titled “Voluptuary Stuck in a Box,” Terrence Rafferty describes the paradox … »

Birthday Suits: Oscar-Snubbed

10 November 2009 5:11 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Today's birthday list doesn't make me feel celebratory so much as oscarighteously furious. Perhaps I should explain. It's only the four first birthday boys whipping me into a golden frenzy. Then things calm down.

Claude, Ann and Dick

Todays Birthdays 11/10

1889 Claude Rains, never won an Oscar. This despite being a great screen actor, whose filmography reads like a catalogue of Golden Age greatness. He's an actor who made indelible contributions to not 1, not 2 but 7 Best Picture nominees, a number that doesn't even reflect films like Notorious, Now Voyager, The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man, Mrs. Skeffington or The Greatest Story Ever Told. He didn't even get an honorary statue!

1925 Richard Burton, never won an Oscar. This despite winning exactly as many nominations as Liz Taylor won husbands.

1928 Ennio Moriccone has never won an Oscar. This despite being a world reknowned composer, being worshipped by film fanatics and revolutionizing how people scored Westerns. »

More horror screenings and Zombie Walks!

14 October 2009 12:17 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Halloween is coming, and fright flicks are everywhere at repertory houses and special showings. Joining the screening events we previously listed here and here are more big-screen revivals of classic fear films, plus a couple of East Coast Zombie Walks!

• Canadian undead fans can take part in the 7th Annual Toronto Zombie Walk, which takes place Saturday, October 24 beginning at 3 p.m. This one starts at Trinity Bellwoods Park (meeting place is the pit between Dundas Street and, appropriately enough, Gore Vale Avenue) and ends at the Bloor Cinema (506 Bloor Street West), where the festivities continue with a Cinema of the Dead double feature of Thom Eberhardt’s Night Of The Comet and Lucio Fulci’s Zombie. Admission to the movies is $16 for ghouls and $20 for regular humans; more info on the Walk can be seen here, and on the screenings here.

• This year’s official New York City Zombie Crawl takes place Sunday, »

Dave’s Weekly Comic Book Recommendations

8 July 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The colossal and beautiful Wednesday Comics hits stands this week for its first installment of twelve weekly issues. I shouldn’t really explain to you why you should buy this comic, but does Paul Pope doing an Adam Strange story do it for you? No? How about the 100 Bullets team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso doing Batman? Or Neil Gaiman and Mike Allred doing Metamorpho? I’ll stop.  For $3.99 you’ll get a newspaper sized issue full of great comics.

We’re big fans of Chuck here at The Flickcast. Especially me, I’ve been waiting for this collection for what seems like months. Written by series writers Peter Johnson and Zev Borow, it seems like this series was the first phase of trying out TV series as comics if that series would end up getting canceled. Thankfully, Chuck was not canceled and we still have this fun comic. »

Goyer's The Invisible Man

21 June 2009 11:30 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Following The Wolfman, and the news that The Bride of Frankenstein is on the slab and ready for the electrodes, comes an update on David S. Goyer's The Invisible Man.Goyer told Shock Till You Drop that "I've finished a draft and... Universal are breathing down my neck to get the revisions done. It's a movie they'd like to make."Invisible men have turned up in movies of varying quality by John Carpenter (Memoirs of an Invisible Man), Paul Verhoeven (Hollow Man) and Stephen Norrington (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) but a straight movie adaptation of Hg Wells' original novel hasn't happened since James Whale's 1933 classic. And it doesn't seem to be happening here, since Goyer has talked about the character "being turned into a secret agent and sent into imperial Russia". He's also talked of genre-straddling and Steampunk.Goyer's pedigree as a writer of great high-concept movies is undisputed (Batman, »

More Visibility Coming for 'The Invisible Man'

20 June 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

A couple of years back, David Goyer stated that he would write and direct the sequel to the 1933 film The Invisible Man, originally based upon a story by H.G. Wells. Meanwhile, Goyer now tells ShockTillYouDrop that things are definitely moving forward.

"I've since finished a draft and I'm in the midst of revisions for it right now," he revealed to the site. "Universal seems pretty high on it. So, they're just breathing down my neck to get the revisions done. It's a movie they'd like to make."

The new story centers on a British nephew of the original "Invisible Man". Once he discovers his uncle's formula for achieving invisibility, he is recruited by British intelligence agency MI5 during WWII.

Meanwhile Universal has begun raiding the vaults for most of its classic "monster" fare. The studio is releasing The Wolfman on November 6 with the fate of its other siblings depending upon Wolfman's success. »

Latest Updates from David S. Goyer on The Invisible Man

19 June 2009 5:58 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

The last time we heard from writer/director David S. Goyer about his upcoming project The Invisible Man was late last year, as he was starting to tour around for The Unborn. Since that hit in January, to rather dismal reviews, Goyer has remained somewhat out of the public spotlight. ShockTillYouDrop finally caught up with Goyer today in the offices for his upcoming TV show Flash Forward and got a small, bit positive update, on The Invisible Man. Yep, this is that remake, or rather re-adaptation, of H.G. Wells' classic story about, well, an invisible man. "I've since finished a draft and I'm in the midst of revisions." "Universal seems pretty high on it. So, they're just breathing down my neck to get the revisions done. It's a movie they'd like to make," Goyer says. That's definitely good news, but as Styd also reports, Universal probably won't give The Invisible Man »

Does X-Men Origins: Magneto have a new director?

11 May 2009 2:53 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

The roaring debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine has been the launchpad for several other spin-offs getting the green light.

We've heard about a second Wolverine film, a Deadpool movie and a Gambit spin-off. And it now seems there is new movement on X-Men Origins: Magneto, a project that would explore the backstory of the magnetically-powered archvillain played in the X-Men trilogy by Ian McKellen.

Sources are now saying that James McTeigue is in negotiations to direct the movie, instead of David S. Goyer. And Internet Movie Database confirms this, with its listing for McTeigue saying he is in talks to take on Magneto.

As I mentioned yesterday, McTeigue is apparently also being sought to take on the Conan remake after Brett Ratner left the director's chair so it will be interesting to see which project he opts for, or whether he is able to do both. At one point, Children »

Gay Of The Dead 11: L.A. Weekend of Horrors Recap

26 April 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

When Tony asked me to moderate a panel on The Lair for at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, I was thrilled. I participated in a bunch of panels at Gaylaxicon a couple years ago and had a ball because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of a ham. So the opportunity to be on a panel at a Fango con was an automatic, “Yes!”

As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. I mean, The Lair is a fun show, but it’s on a Pay-Per-View network, and I would guess that ninety percent of its audience is more camp enthusiast than horror fanatic. Would there be any fans of The Lair actually attending the con? And more importantly, would there be any Glbt horror fans attending the con? Okay, yes, obviously »
