Sex & Nudity

  • Although no actual nudity is shown, Trilby supposedly poses nude for a painting. She is seen nude from across the room but is the room but little can be discerned (and wearing reported nude body suit). Close ups are closely shot as as to show nothing explicit.
  • In one pre-Production Code scene, Svengali, knowing that Trilby does not love him, hypnotizes her. and she momentarily becomes consumed with desire for him (she gets a lustful expression in her eyes and whispers "I love you" while trying to grab him). However, his heart condition prevents him from consummating their relationship.

  • Svengali has a heart attack at the end, and Trilby's singing voice fails her. She also collapses, and when Svengali says "God, grant me in death what You denied me in life: the woman I love", she whispers "Svengali" and dies. Svengali also dies, immediately afterward.
