Onnalee Blank just received her ninth and 10th Emmy nominations in the Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing categories for her work as the sound supervisor and re-recording artist, respectively, on Amazon Prime’s 10-episode limited series “The Underground Railroad.” After accruing seven of her preceding eight bids for HBO’s concluded phenomenon “Game of Thrones,” Blank admits, “Something about getting recognized for my work that is not that show feels like, Ok, yes, I broke through that barrier.” In our exclusive video interview (watch above), Blank elaborates on her determination to subvert the tropes of a traditional slave narrative on “The Underground Railroad,” on her two Emmy episode submissions for the series, and on merging different genres, themes and ambiences on it.

During the Game of Thrones series finale, there’s an exchange between Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister that is as much about the series’ legacy as it is the characters’ inner turmoil. Only a handful of scenes earlier, these same two men conspired to murder the woman they called their queen, Daenerys Targaryen. Now living with the consequences of that heavy deed—with Jon again banished to the white hell Beyond the Wall and Tyrion conscripted to a lifetime of public service—a tormented Jon asks his friend was it right what they did?
“Ask me again in 10 years,” Tyrion says tersely. After all these years, the craftiest of Lannisters finally has learned he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know—and who really knows how the decisions in the here and now will appear to posterity? It’s easy to speculate that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss...

Parallel dream worlds open up, inanimate objects come to life: as a new Buñuel biopic shows, there are no rules to the medium
You wouldn’t mistake the new Spanish animation Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles for a Pixar movie. Not unless your children enjoy seeing heads ripped off live chickens and donkeys getting stung to death by bees. It is a chronicle of Luis Buñuel’s time making his 1933 documentary Las Hurdes, and his struggle to define himself as a film-maker following his split from Salvador Dalí. In terms of Buñuel’s career, the rest is history, but Buñuel in the Labyrinth of Turtles is a reminder of how well-suited animation and surrealism are. They go together like a lobster and a telephone.
Early animators certainly recognised the potential. Around the time Buñuel and Dalí were slicing up eyeballs in Un Chien Andalou, innovators such as Max Fleischer...

The Seven Network’s ‘Extreme Weddings.’
The Seven, Nine and 10 networks insist they are not stockpiling Australian dramas and other local programming despite the suspension of the local content quotas for the rest of this year.
Last week Screen Producers Australia CEO Matt Deaner slammed the government’s decision to suspend the quotas for drama, documentary and children’s programming as a very blunt tool which has the “potential of crippling an industry already on its knees.”
Deaner said: “With no incentive for the broadcasters to release hundreds of hours of already delivered but not yet broadcast children’s, drama and documentary content, it harms the Australian public’s ability to access the content which is sitting gathering dust on shelves.”
The Nine Network, which has seen shows including The Voice Australia, The Block and Endemol Shine Australia’s drama Rdfs suspend or delay production, rejects that notion.

Director, writer and producer Sam Raimi may be best known to mainstream audiences for directing blockbuster movies like the original Spider-Man trilogy (with Tobey Maguire) and Oz the Great and Powerful. But Raimi got his start making one of the greatest independent horror movies of all time: The Evil Dead. Shot quick and dirty, the film became an instant classic and spawned a franchise encompassing more movies, TV, comics and video games.
Raimi has dipped in and out of the horror genre over the years, while moving into bigger movies and different genres (he’ll revisit the Marvel universe soon too with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), but his new project, an anthology series called 50 States of Fright, seems like a return to the kind of pulp, story-driven, no-frills horror with which he started his career.

Seven’s director of network programming Angus Ross explains how the country’s lockdown is benefiting Seven’s channels and catch-up viewing, the need to rejig the schedule, and flags a raft of upcoming Australian shows.
Q: At-home viewing levels are spiking for the free-to-air networks, Foxtel and the streaming services, resulting in big gains for your primary network, particularly 7News and Sunrise, 7Plus and 7Flix?
A: It is great to see viewers turning to Fta, particularly 7News, Sunrise and The Latest. These programs are Australia’s dominant and most trusted news brands. We are seeing viewing spikes across all of our channels and 7Plus is breaking viewing records on a daily basis.
Q: While this lockdown may last for six months, I assume you are hoping many viewers will have ‘rediscovered’ Fta TV and so you may retain a lot of those viewers?

Bungie has revealed what's in store for players when Destiny 2's upcoming season begins.
Bungie has shared more information about how Destiny 2's upcoming season will work, and the upcoming changes to the game's format include the introduction of what is essentially a battle pass.
"With every Season Pass, you will get everything you’d expect from a Destiny Season, not just the new Season Rank Ui and the reward tracks," reads an extensive post on the Bungie blog. "Like I alluded to way back in the first Director’s Cut, we need more sustainable ways to deliver rewards, and the Season Rank Ui is a big step in us getting there."
Destiny 2's upcoming Season Pass works about like every other pass out there. As you play Destiny 2, you'll unlock points which allow you to level your way through the Season Pass and unlock rewards as you go.

Goodbye, summer movie season; hello, biopics, prestige dramas and oh-so-much-more-humbler character-driven fare. A popular PBS period piece spins off into theaters; an even more popular page-turner gets the awards-friendly adaptation treatment; and a space epic gives us a 2001 for the father-issue crowd. Plus there’s a killer clown on the loose, a crew of strippers robbing men blind and one famously pissed-off Green Beret out for blood one last time. Here’s what’s coming to a theater (remember those?) near you in September.

By creating the first alliance between Guardians, the Awoken, and Spider’s Fallen, Bungie now has the option to explore an even greater alliance between alien races, Guardians, and the Awoken. Pour one out for poor Cayde-6. “Destiny 2” fans have known for months that developer Bungie is killing off the fan-favorite character in the upcoming Forsaken expansion. Now, they can watch the gunslinger’s final battle in a new cinematic trailer unveiled during Gamescom on Thursday.
When some of the “Destiny” universe’s most notorious outlaws escape from the Prison of Elders, only the wisecracking hunter Cayde-6 is there to protect the city. He puts up a brave fight, even killing a creature with his horn (?) at one point. But, he ultimately fails. Voiced by actor Nathan Fillion in the first two games (Nolan North is apparently taking over for Forsaken), Cayde-6 brought some much-needed levity to “Destiny’s” usually self-serious tone.
Additionally, Bungie and publisher Activision announced Thursday they’re offering a free trial of Forsaken’s new Gambit mode for all “Destiny 2” owners. Gambit is a hybrid 4v4 mode that merges player-vs.

When it comes to world-renown crooks and dubious anti-heroes, Solo: A Star Wars Story isn’t exactly in short supply.
From lawless rogues in the vein of Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) to Dryden Vos, a high-ranking smuggler who presides over a criminal underworld as though he’s The Godfather himself, Lucasfilm’s Anthology pic presents a who’s who of space cowboys. Oh, and as if that wasn’t enough, Vos is also sporting some pretty nasty facial scars, just to drive home the point that Paul Bettany’s gangster is someone you want to keep at arm’s reach.
And then there’s the young, untrained Han Solo, whose first steps into the dark and seedy world of smuggling begins with the heist of the century. In doing so, he’ll come across Enfys Nest, a strange, opulent alien that looks as though it’s just walked out of...

“Destiny 2” developer Bungie is inviting members of the community to its Bellevue, Wash., studio this week for a summit to discuss the game’s future.
The meeting comes at a time when the developer continues to struggle with player dissatisfaction. “Destiny 2” has been plagued by controversies since its launch last September. The biggest one involved the game’s Eververse storefront, where people could spend real-life money on loot boxes containing cosmetic items. Players claimed Bungie was hiding content behind a paywall, and the studio was forced to tweak the system after they flooded it with complaints.
Then, there were reports that Bungie was deliberately hindering player progression by lowering the amount of experience they earned based on how quickly they earned it. Fans were also critical of timed events like the Dawning and Faction Rally, and of the game’s new shader system. Bungie sometimes took months to address players’ issues,...

Though the finer details of Avengers: Infinity War‘s post-credits scene(s) – or lack thereof – are being kept locked away in the Marvel vaults, directors Joe and Anthony Russo admitted that they almost considered not using the McU trope whatsoever.
During a recent chat with Radio Times (h/t ComicBook.com), the filmmaking duo was asked straight-up about post-credits scenes and, perhaps more importantly, whether they mulled over the possibility of leaving them out entirely due to the fact that the so-far untitled Avengers 4 is right around the corner.
And don’t worry, no spoilers here, particularly after the Russo Brothers issued a public plea asking fans to refrain from spoiling Infinity War for their fellow moviegoers:
Anthony Russo: “It’s hard to comment on that. Again, because we don’t want to speak to the experience too specifically.”

The Mad Titan’s origin story will be told, but not during Avengers: Infinity War.
Leading up to release, directors Joe and Anthony Russo confirmed plans to trim Thanos’ backstory on the belief that it interfered with the sequel’s pacing. And that’s despite the fact that they consider Josh Brolin’s über-villain to be the main character of Infinity War – the film largely revolves around his quest to acquire all six Infinity Stones, after all.
But before he became known as Marvel’s Mad Titan, Thanos was born on a doomed world (Titan), where he was cast out by his people “for his genius, physical deviancy, and pragmatic but monstrous ideas.”
That’s a line pulled from the synopsis of Thanos: Titan Consumed, the McU’s first canon novel that’s due for release in November. Penned by Barry Lyga, the tie-in book is described as so:

We now have a new poster for the film to share with you that bring all of those characters together, and as you can see they packed as many of those characters as they possibly could in the poster! Everyone except for Hawkeye. Where the hell is Hawkeye!? I'm starting to think that he's not even going to be in this movie. There's even a motion version of the poster as well that you can watch below.
Fandango also released some Avengers: Infinity War poster art as well that I included, and just in case you didn't know, tickets are already on sale, so if you want to buy them...

Star Wars Rebels is ending in the next few weeks – but dry those tears, Star Wars fans, as we’ve been promised that there will be another animated series set in that galaxy far, far away coming soon. And now, we might know exactly what it’ll be.
A new trademark filed by Lucasfilm leads us to believe that the new show will be titled Star Wars: Resistance. The reason we’re pretty sure this applies to a TV series rather than anything else is because the trademark covers spinoff media like books, games, toys, etc.
This scoop comes to us from Twitter user Jordan Maison, who shared the following:

Let's throw it back. Everyone's style evolves over time...even if you have a tried-and-true wardrobe uniform (think: Jennifer Aniston in white tees and jeans or Queen Elizabeth II in bright dress-coats). However, some changes in clothing preferences are more obvious than others. Maybe it's due to a stylist change, the celeb wants to project a new image or just a natural progression of taste influenced by new experiences and people. Whatever the case, the before-and-after comparisons of certain celebrity style transformations can be quite jarring. For instance, remember Beyoncé in Destiny's Child heyday? It was a lot of bandeau crop tops, A-line ball gowns and, of course,...

A pre-release reboot may explain Destiny 2's controversial loot box and microtransaction features...
On a recent episode of the Dtr Podcast, Kotaku's Jason Schreier suggested that development of Destiny 2 was rebooted almost 16 months before its release date.

"I think that it was made in a relatively short period of time," said Schreier. "There was a big reboot of Destiny 2 at some point in early 2016. There had been a previous guy who was directing the game before Luke Smith, who's the current director, took over. So that guy was kind of put aside - he's not at Bungie anymore - and Luke Smith took over."

As we wind down the year, the video games that released in 2017 are deservedly being honored for their achievements in expanding the gaming experience. There is one part of the process, however, that often gets neglected. Those nifty little 2-3 (sometimes 8) minute trailers that get us hyped up for the upcoming games. Today, we honor the trailers that surprised and astounded us in 2017.
Note: The following list is based solely on the trailers, not on how the game was when it released. I’ve also ranked the trailers 10-1, with number 1 being the best. Now, let’s get to it!
10. Call of Duty WWII Reveal Trailer
Call of Duty has a knack for creating fun and inventive trailers, especially when they were set in the distant future. However, few have had as much heart as the one Sledgehammer Games created for WWII. In just 2 minutes, they found a way to...

With 2017 on the way out our contributors have been looking back at the best the year’s had to offer in terms of video games. There’s no shortage of great games to choose from this year, but we felt these picks were the cream of the crop.
Last week, our contributors broke down their individual top lists for the year in movies, but today, we’ve turned to our gaming crew to highlight the best games of the year. Once again, it’s a difficult list to narrow down, but we forced ourselves to stick to only five choices:

There was definitely no shortage of great games this year, and even a new console (the Switch), to choose from this year. While most of the “big” games were able to meet expectations, some fell short (looking at you Mass Effect: Andromeda), while others exceeded all the hype. Obviously,...

Despite initial promise, Destiny 2 is sorely lacking long term engagement...
Since Star Wars fever is currently sweeping the world, I find myself thinking back to 1999 when, after a 16-year wait, fans were finally being treated to a new episode in the saga, one written and directed by George Lucas himself, no less!
Back then we weren’t treated to worldwide release dates as we are today, and rather than wait a few months to see this landmark moving picture event, I booked tickets at the Ziegfeld movie theatre in New York and flew across the Atlantic with some friends to see Episode I as soon as possible.
So overwhelming was our excitement, that it wasn’t until we saw the film for a second time on that trip that we started to question whether it was actually any good. By the time I attended the UK premiere in Leicester Square,...

Pixar’s Día de los Muertos saga, “Coco,” the Oscar frontrunner, led the pack with 13 nominations for the 45th Annie Awards, followed by GKid’s powerful indie fave, “The Breadwinner,” with 10. Both are expected to win the top categories for feature and indie feature at the February 3rd Asifa-Hollywood ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
“Coco” also picked up nominations for directing (Lee Unkrich and co-director Adrian Molina), character design, two each for character animation and storyboarding, writing (Molina and Matthew Aldrich), Michael Giacchino’s music, production design, effects, editing, and voice acting for newcomer Anthony Gonzalez as Miguel.
“The Breadwinner,” about a young girl forced to become a boy in Afghanistan, also collected nominations for directing (Cartoon Saloon’s Nora Twomey), Mychael and Jeff Danna’s music, two voice acting bids for Saara Chaudry and Laara Sadiq, character design, production design, storyboarding, writing (Anita Doron), and editing.

Hard-media home video is making a comeback, and Kino Lorber shows its faith in the medium with an extravagant collection of its entire silent holdings of the Fritz Lang library. Mythical heroes, sacrificing heroines, criminal madmen and uncontrolled super-science are his themes; it’s a paranoid’s view of the first half of the 20th Century, expressed with fantastic innovations that literally re-write the rules of cinema.

For years, Game of Thrones has retained the rather unfortunate title of TV’s most-pirated show. But during season 7, things threatened to spiral out of control.
Not only did HBO’s international partner leak episode 4, “The Spoils of War,” two days ahead of schedule, but the network itself was crippled by a massive security breach, when 1.5 terabytes of data was stolen. Subsequent reports later confirmed that the two incidents were entirely unrelated but by that stage, the damage was already done, and season 7’s penultimate instalment, “Beyond the Wall,” was posted online prior to HBO’s initial broadcast.
It turns out Thrones fans needn’t worry about HBO repeating the same mistakes during the crucial eighth season though, as Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) told Scandinavian talk show Skavlan (via Fansided) that he won’t have access to season 8’s scripts, and will instead learn his lines through an earpiece.

Link has always been a character of few words, so it almost seems like a joke to say he's had 11 voice actors voice him over the years, but it's absolutely true. We're talking from the time Jonathan Potts first gave the character a speaking role in 1989's The Legend Of Zelda television series, all the way to Breath Of The Wild. Here are some facts on these voice actors who landed the gig of the century as they net money just grunting and screaming their way through a game.
The Most Prevalent Actor In The Franchise Is Sachi Matsumoto
I guess we should say actress, as the female Matsumoto is known for her voicing of "Toon Link" in the Legend Of Zelda franchise. In total Matsumoto has voiced the character in 8 games, and only two of those games are canon (Windwaker and Phantom Hourglass). Hilariously enough, Matsumoto has voiced the...

If Game of Thrones faltered in the narrative department during the course of season 7, trading nuance and, at times, common sense for a truncated timeline and some truly memorable spectacle, then HBO’s fantasy flagship knocked it out of the park in terms of visual effects.
From Drogon swooping down and burning the Lannister loot train to kingdom come to the Night King resurrecting Viserion, the seventh, penultimate season of Thrones pulled no punches, which leaves us all the more excited for season 8’s arrival in 2019. That’s still an awful long way away, unfortunately, but a new video from Spanish visual effects company El Ranchito reveals an anatomy of “Beyond the Wall.”
Posted to Vimeo, the five-minute snippet presents a thorough breakdown of the creative process involved in transforming raw Game of Thrones footage to the gripping spectacle that airs via HBO. Filmed primarily in the north of Ireland,...

Now that Season 7 is over, “Game of Thrones’s” flaws have shaked out in a fascinating way — and we’re now fascinated by said issues. The below issues aren’t our Only complaints for the latest season, but we still have a lot of concerns.
Congratulations, citizens of Westeros, on your newfound ability to teleport!
Even though “Game of Thrones” takes place in a setting that is technologically equivalent to the Middle Ages, the Westerosi have apparently cracked the code on instantaneous travel. Perhaps we should pray to the God of the Seven ourselves.
But seriously, we’ve already gone on about the ridiculously fast travel time for many of these cross-country and maritime journeys on the show. What it comes down to is lazy writing. In the past, whole seasons were dedicated to following characters’ lives on the road, such as when Arya (Maisie Williams) was escaping from Winterfell...

With so much time spent dwelling on the death of Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and the fall of the Wall, few people have stopped to consider the very grim possibility that two other fan-favorite characters met their maker in the season seven finale of Game of Thrones.
The final scene of the episode, called "The Dragon and the Wolf," featured Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) helplessly watching as the Night King, riding an undead Viserion, pounded the wall with a steady stream of ice-blue zombie-dragon fire.

Let’s make one thing clear: On September 17, when Stephen Colbert hosts the Emmys, you won’t hear any “Game of Thrones” folks among the nominees. (Though, if any casino is taking bets, we’d like to put $20 on him wearing a Daenerys wig in the opening segment.) Season 7 of “Game of Thrones” premiered just too late to miss the eligibility window for this year’s ceremony, but that doesn’t mean the seven episodes’ worth of performances won’t be a huge factor in 2018.

According to the internet, which I trust implicitly and never question, the last few episodes of this season's Game of Thrones left a bit to be desired. Director Alan Taylor admitted that the pacing was rushed a bit and some plotholes were simply driven over by action set pieces at times, but was this really the worst season yet?
I headed on over to Rotten Tomatoes and looked for the worst reviewed episodes of all time. Here's the thing: not that many episodes in the entire run of Game of Thrones have been poorly reviewed. It's a testament to the quality of the show, one of TV's all-time best.
With the taste of Season 7 still in your mouth, how do these episodes stack up for you?
"The Night Lands" (Season 2, Episode 2) - 83%
Gendry, who just made his reappearance in the series this past season, is on the run. Jon lurks about at Craster's keep.

Here, we celebrate 27 of the best – and it should be noted, there are so many fantastic fight scenes in this show, we had to leave out some great ones.
We’ve gone for a fairly loose definition of ‘fight’ here. To qualify, an example has to be an actual fight, with both sides standing a chance, both getting in a few jabs, and having some ability to defend themselves,...

To say HBO has a security problem would be a bit of an understatement. Over the course of the past TV season, they’ve had hacks and leaks up the wazoo, and every week, it seems like they’re in danger of having yet another episodes of their shows get released early to an eager public. Yet, all the same, Game of Thrones seems to be performing quite admirably.
August 20’s episode, “Beyond the Wall” still managed to pull off north of 10 million viewers despite being inadvertently leaked the week prior. It seemed that, as insatiable as fans were to see the next episode, they still tuned in t watch the show at the proper time and channel. Talk about loyalty. But is this something that would continue, especially after the hackers threatened to release this episode online?

Winter is indeed upon us, as “Game of Thrones” has just wrapped its truncated seventh season with a jaw-dropping finale that moves plenty of pieces (most of them terrifying, ice-cold, and dragon-aided) into place for a game-changer of a final season…that won’t come until sometime in 2018. It’s the Long Night, all over again (and, if those gently falling snowflakes during some of the finale’s last moments are any indication, fans of the HBO series aren’t the only ones headed for a chilling, unforgiving few months).
In order to keep diehard viewers sated until its last episodes hit the small screen, here are some ideas for films that might help ease the pain, from classic Westerns to underseen historical dramas, all with that special “Thrones” touch (murderous, political, bloody, and at least partially beholden to mythical beasts).

The final episode of Game of Thrones seventh season brings with it the first snowflake for the show’s fandom, our winter begins now. With no confirmed release date on the eighth and final season, this is the last taste of the show we will get for what is likely, at least a year. I am still of the belief that the Season 7 episodes get better with each installment. I loved last week’s episode, even with the time discrepancies. I am fine with the pace of this season and just knowing how events played out, no matter how long they took to unfold. Benioff and Weiss have moved the story along at what I think is a necessary pace.
Last night’s finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf," was a fantastic 80 minutes in Westeros. The music for the episode really stood out to me, it wasn’t as good,...

7.7 The Dragon And The Wolf
There's been a lot of complaint about the seventh season of Game Of Thrones. One of the biggest complaints has been regarding its pacing. Yes, it's been very, very fast. Maybe it's been too fast. Still, I've watched a lot of shows where the opposite has been true, and allow me to suggest to the complaining parties out there that I'd much rather have a show move too fast than too slow. Dragging out too little plot over the course of a full season is a...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 7, Episode 7, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”]
At the King’s Landing version of Yalta, with feuding superpowers gathered to face a growing threat, Tyrion proclaims ”There is no conversation that will erase the last 50 years.” That certainly didn’t stop “Game of Thrones” from spending most of Season 7 endeavoring to rewrite the history books in fateful conversations: backroom deals, clifftop confrontations, even in words on a page recorded before some of these major players were even born.
Yet whenever Season 7 faltered, spun itself in circles trying to set up a fuzzy endgame, it turned to spectacle to deliver the figurative death blow, even if that wasn’t always literal. Billed as a meeting of the minds, writers David Benioff and D. B. Weiss delivered a batch of parting shots worthy of a season-long buildup. With interpersonal beats and world-shifting revelations, both were delivered with the force necessary to sustain this TV megalith. It’s a dramatic...

The site reached out to HBO, which repeated a previous statement: “The hacker may continue to drop bits and pieces of stolen information in an attempt to generate media attention,” it says in part. “That’s a game we’re not going to participate in.” Several episodes from this season of “Thrones” have leaked early online, including last week’s highly eventful “Beyond the Wall”; as such, spoilers have been an issue for fans.

(Note: This post contains spoilers for “Game of Thrones” through Season 7, Episode 6: “Beyond the Wall.”) “Game of Thrones” keeps giving viewers more and more reasons to fear its ultimate bad guy, the Night King. In the latest episode of Season 7, “Beyond the Wall,” the show raised the stakes even more: The Night King now has an undead dragon as part of his massive army of the dead. But the Night King remains mysterious, elusive, and, well … weird. The sixth episode of Season 7 is as good a demonstration of that weirdness as any, when the Night King...

The impassioned Game of Thrones fanbase is currently beside itself with excitement in anticipation of Sunday’s season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”
It is, without question, a momentous and defining chapter in Westerosi history, and HBO has ensured the seventh season will go out with a bang thanks to a super-sized 80-minute episode. Best settle in for some drama, folks, because it’s about to get hairy.
Coming off last week’s “Beyond the Wall,” in which the Night King trapped the ‘Snowicide Squad,’ unleashed an army of Wights, and killed (and indeed resurrected!) Viserion, viewers have been left on tenterhooks as the fate of Westeros hangs in the balance. But thanks to season 7’s official soundtrack listing, we may have some story clues pertaining to Sunday’s grand finale. First spotted by Vanity Fair, music from the show’s seventh season is expected to go on sale from September 29th,...
