King La Farge, the richest pearler in the South Sea Islands, is favored above the other habitués of the place, so that when Malcolm becomes fascinated with the dancer and shows it, he nearly kills the young man. Malcolm's artistic soul is set ablaze when the Lorelei to add variety to the entertainment, impersonates the Madonna, and his reverent admiration awakens in the woman a desire to know the only man who had never looked upon her as his lawful prey. She conceives a genuine love for Malcolm, and he knowing nothing of her mode of life, learns to love her. But he finds her dancing for La Forge's edification, understands the situation at last, and his idol shattered, Malcolm turns against her. But she has proved the necessary inspiration for his painting of the Madonna, and through it, he is led to believe that the woman's reformation is complete and that she truly loves him. He is about to take her in his arms when La Farge, in a frenzy of rage shoots, intending to kill Malcolm, but instead kills Alma. Malcolm returns to the little Mission town and there finds happiness with Alice, the companion of Convent days, as his wife.

Her charm is so potent that when he does go to his home to be married, he is gloomy and distraught, and at the moment of the tying of the connubial knot, he flouts the bride-elect and refuses to go on with the ceremony. The bewitched officer returns to Paris and enters his charmer's house. Then comes the harsh note in the Lorelei's song. He finds her returning the caresses of another man. There is a duel in which Champlain is wounded. Champlain writes to his mother asking forgiveness. He follows the letter before he could have had time to receive an answer. All is silent and still on the maternal threshold. As he stands by the window looking out he hears solemn funeral bells tolling: in the tower. A few moments later passes a black shrouded bier. By its side his mother walks weeping. The dead face on the bier was that of his fiancé whose heart he had crushed. Months pass and the mother is living with her son in Paris. The hours grow late and he has not come home. She finds a letter from Delilah, with whom Champlain had become reconciled. It reads: "Well do I see that you love me not. To refuse to buy me the jewel for which I so much long, is heartless, particularly as you control the regiment's finances. Bring it to-morrow." The mother goes to the apartments of Delilah. There the mother begs and implores that Delilah give up her son. The adventuress laughs and tells the mother to be gone. A dagger flashes in the outraged parent's hand and she kills Delilah.
- A famous painter chances to see one day the lines of Heine's poem, "Die Lorelei." This gives him the inspiration to paint the subject, and his daughter poses as the maid of mystery. But he needs a model for the fisherman who was drowned while trying to reach this maid of the rocks, so he inserted an advertisement in the paper. A young and handsome fisherman sees this and, being urged on by his wife, applies and is engaged to pose for the painter. The artist's daughter becomes interested in the rough but handsome fisher lad, and in the spirit of flirtation proceeds to lure him on. When she realizes that he is falling under her spell she becomes fascinated by the spirit of conquest. Heedless of results, she draws him on into an entanglement of love as the picture progresses. His wife realizes that a great something has taken her husband away from her, and she kneels in prayer, asking for the love that her heart craves for, and the prayer is answered. The daughter falls asleep by her father's painting, and the canvas becomes animated with life. She sees the old legend of the Rhine enacted before her, while she herself appears as the Rhine maiden who lured the men to their death. She awakes and realizes for the first time what she has been doing, and when again the fisherman seeks her out she sends him away, back to his wife. The spell is broken and the sunset finds husband and wife once again united.

Royce is a highly-experienced, decorated, and well-liked pilot with one apparent flaw; he's decidedly superstitious, and he's just been handed command of a Flying Dutchman that seems to have a mind of its own.
