- Gertrude Tonkongy was a playwright and author. She was born around 1908, most likely in New York City. She was one of ten children born to George and Sylvia (some early records have her name as Sadie or Sasha) Tonkonogy, both Russian immigrants. Her father came to America in 1888 at the age of 21 and by 1900 was practicing law in New York City. Her mother immigrated in 1886 at the age of 12 and married George four years later. Gertrude had two famous siblings, George T. Delacorte Jr., philanthropist and founder of Dell Publishing and Eugene Tonkonogy, a very successful real estate investor and attorney.
Gertrude is mostly remembered today for her play "The Three-Cornered Moon" that opened on Broadway in March of 1933 and premiered as a film in August that same year. She also wrote the 1948 play "Town House", a comedy about the shortage of housing adapted from stories by John Cheever. She authored as well, a number of funny short stories and dabbled in science fiction (as Gertrude Friedberg) with the novel "The Revolving Boy" (1966).
Gertrude was married to Dr. Charles K. Friedberg, a prominent New York cardiologist. Dr. Friedberg died in 1972 as a result of a horrific car crash that killed three other people. Gertrude Tonkonogy Friedberg's obituary appeared in the Wednesday, 20 September, 1989 issue of the New York Times following her death on Sunday from cancer at her Manhattan residence. She was survived by a son and a daughter. - Lill-Tollie Zellman was born on 30 March 1908 in Karlskrona, Blekinge län, Sweden. She was an actress, known for June Night (1940), Anna-Clara och hennes bröder (1923) and Röda dagen (1931). She died on 17 September 1989.
