- Born in Berlin, Germany, in 1881, Walther von Brauchitsch joined the German army in 1900 at age 19. During World War I he was an officer on the German General Staff. He stayed in the army after the war, and eventually rose to command the East Prussian military district. In 1937 he was given command of the 4th Army Group and finally was made Commander of the German army in 1938. He was in charge of the conduct of the German ground war until 1941, when he fell out of favor with Adolf Hitler after the German defeat at Moscow, which Hitler blamed him for, and he was forced to resign. He managed to survive the war, but was captured by the Allies and was to be charged with and tried for war crimes, but he died in 1948 before that happened.
