In the 1970s, after further training, he became manager of the New York investment houses "Chase Manhattan" and "Lazard Freres". Here Rupert developed into a leader with extensive understanding of the market economy. In 1979, Johann Rupert managed to save the "Rand Merchant Bank" in Johannesburg from bankruptcy. The family also became the owner of some of the most famous cigarette brands such as "Rothmans International", "Peter Stuyvesant" and numerous others. Rupert served as CEO of the company from 1987 onwards. In 1988 he implemented far-reaching changes to the company structure.
