SyFriday: 'Life On Mars' Works For Me

10 October 2008 1:02 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

Maybe it was the poorly cast pilot, or the bad initial reviews of said pilot. But I have to say, going into "Life On Mars" on ABC, I had very low expectations. Instead, I found what I feel is one of the most refreshing procedural dramas we've had in a long time, and already has become a must-watch for me after just a single week. That's a lot coming from me, because those who know me well know that I am not a big fan of pilots. They are typically so full of exposition and are so rough that I would rather wait until a few more episodes air before I start watching, or many times read a recap instead. But "Life On Mars" was different. Obviously it learned a lot from its initial attempt at a pilot, and made the show grittier, more entertaining, and bringing in actors like

9/11 Cowardice: Simple As ABC

15 September 2008 9:23 AM, PDT | From NYPost.com | See recent New York Post news

The suits at Disney-owned ABC are too chicken to re-air or release on DVD their $40 million docudrama that accused Bill Clinton of squandering many chances to capture Osama bin Laden before the Twin Towers attacks.

That's the charge of John Ziegler, director of a new ABC-bashing documentary titled "Blocking 'The Path to 9/11.' " It focuses on why ABC delayed airing and severely re-edited its ambitious miniseries "The Path to 9/11" in 2006 after a furious Clinton and his cronies strong-armed the network.

Ziegler alleges that ABC's grand plan was to re-air the show,

Eva Mendes: Whore

10 September 2008 7:50 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Eva Mendes will join Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, which, it should be pointed out, is not a remake of the Harvey Keitel movie from the 1990s, although there have to be some similarities, you'd think, or else why keep the name?

Mendes told MTV that the film is a murder mystery set in post-Katrina New Orleans, but that's about all she said regarding the plot. Because, she insists, she doesn't really know how director Werner Herzog's movie will turn out.

"I have no idea what we made in a way because it was so experimental," she said. "I don’t know [what it's gonna wind up being]." One thing it won't be is as explicitly violent or sexual as the Nc-17 Bad Lieutenant directed by Abel Ferrara. "There is nothing that I was in this film that was like that," she swears.

We know from Cage's recent interviews that

De Niro Leaves 'Edge of Darkness'

5 September 2008 1:04 AM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Here's a message from the Damn Shame Department: Variety reports that Robert De Niro has left the set of Edge of Darkness, and he won't be coming back.

Last month, we expressed a cautious excitement about De Niro and Mel Gibson working side-by-side on this revamped version of Edge of Darkness. Both the film and the BBC series on which it is based have Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) in the director's chair, and the update was written by William Monahan. The film just began shooting two weeks ago in Massachusetts, with Gibson playing a Boston cop investigating the murder of his daughter. Through his digging, he uncovers some pretty unsavory things, including "government collusion." In the BBC series it was nuclear secrets. That's a plot point that could easily be changed.

Bobby D was scheduled to play a government agent sent in as a cleaner after the murder. Now the

It'll Sell For More Than A Song

'I'm As corny as Kansas in August!" sings Nellie Forbush.

The Famed Rodgers & Ham merstein Music Publishing business, run by Ted Chapin, has put itself on the market for a mere $250 million. This seems like as good a time as any, what with R&H a hit again at Lincoln Center in the brilliant revival of just one of their famous musicals, "South Pacific."

But Chapin isn't selling his other gold mine - the music of Irving Berlin.

Nixon's Dramatic Acting Debut

10 June 2008 12:05 PM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon got her big acting break starring in two Broadway shows at the same time.

The 42-year-old actress was still in college when she landed roles in two big New York productions and tirelessly dashed between the different theatres each night

She explains, "As an 18-year-old, I got parts simultaneously with two Broadway shows. In Hurlyburly, I played a waif in the first act with Chris Walken, Harvey Keitel and Jerry Stiller. Then I zoomed two blocks, changed clothes and played Jeremy Irons' daughter in the very British The Real Thing. Then I ran back to Hurlyburly where I was transformed into the slutty character my waif had then become."

But Nixon eventually resigned because her hectic schedule left no time for college work: "I finally quit because school had to come first."

Anna Nicole Smith Opera Set For U.K.

4 April 2008 5:15 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

The creators of hit musical Jerry Springer: The Opera have started work on a new opera based on the life of tragic star Anna Nicole Smith.

The production is being written by Richard Thomas and Mark-Anthony Turnage, and will be staged at London's Royal Opera House, accompanied by a 90-piece orchestra.

The story will focus on Smith's life story and end with her tragic death from a drugs overdose in 2007.

And Thomas insists the late glamour model is the perfect subject as she is a modern pop culture icon.

He says, "It's an incredible story. It's very operatic and sad. She was quite a smart lady with the tragic flaw that she could not seem to get through life without a vat of prescription drugs.

"For me, (the story) ends when she does. It's an American story. I love American culture. Especially for the opera, the stories seem to work on a grander more epic scale."

Jerry Springer: The Opera, based on Springer's TV talk show, ran in London from 2003 to 2005. The musical made its Broadway debut earlier this year with Harvey Keitel in the title role.
