Actor Roy Scheider Dies at 75

Actor Roy Scheider, a two-time Oscar nominee best known for his leading role as the water-phobic police chief in the smash blockbuster Jaws, died Sunday in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences hospital; he was 75. Though an official cause of death was not released at press time, a hospital spokeswoman stated that the actor had been treated for multiple myeloma at the hospital's research center for the past two years. Born in New Jersey, Scheider pursued a career in boxing before turning to acting, and won an Obie award for his work with the New York Shakespeare Festival in the late '60s. His first major film appearances also began in the late '60s in such movies as Star! and Paper Lion, and it was in 1971 that he truly gained fame for his roles two popular thrillers, Klute and The French Connection; the latter earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. However, it was his role four years later in the Steven Spielberg thriller Jaws for which he became most well-known, playing a local lawman in a tourist beach town who must contend with the sudden appearance of a great white shark; his line, "You're gonna need a bigger boat," became one of the most well-known lines in contemporary film. Scheider also appeared in the ill-fated sequel Jaws 2 (after dropping out of the lead role in The Deer Hunter and in order to be let out of his Universal Studios contract) and the thriller Marathon Man before embarking on his most acclaimed performance, that of Broadway director and choreographer Joe Gideon in Bob Fosse's All That Jazz. The role, closely based on Fosse's life, brought Scheider his second Academy Award nomination in 1979, this time for Best Actor. Though none of Scheider's later films would reach the heights of his movies from the '70s, he continued to work steadily in both film and television, with diverse roles in such films as Still Of The Night, Blue Thunder, 2010, The Russia House, Naked Lunch, The Peacekeeper, The Myth Of Fingerprints (for which he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination) and the TV series SeaQuest DSV and Third Watch. Scheider is survived by his three children and his second wife, actress Brenda King.
'Atonement' Triumphs at BAFTAs
Atonement has won the top prize at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday, landing the gong for Best Film at the London ceremony. The romantic epic, starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley, triumphed over German filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's The Lives Of Others, the Coen brothers' No Country For Old Men, Ridley Scott's American Gangster, and Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood to claim the coveted prize. But McAvoy and Knightley were overlooked in the Leading Actor and Actress categories, with awards going instead to Daniel Day-Lewis for There Will Be Blood and Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose, respectively. Meanwhile, Javier Bardem was named best Supporting Actor for No Country For Old Men, and British actress Tilda Swinton was honored as best Supporting Actress for her role in legal thriller Michael Clayton. Accepting his award at the capital's Royal Opera House, Bardem said: "I want to thank the mommy and daddy of, not mine, (but) Joel and Ethan Coen, because without them there would be no film..." Joel Coen and Ethan Coen also added to their growing collection of awards after they were presented with the Best Director prize for the Academy Award-nominated thriller No Country For Old Men.
Chambers "Doing Fine" After Hospital Stay
Grey's Anatomy star Justin Chambers is doing "just fine" after his brief stay at the psychiatric ward of a Los Angeles hospital last month, according to his co-star Chandra Wilson. The actor, who plays Dr. Alex Karev in the medical drama, voluntarily checked himself in to the UCLA Medical Center at the end of January to seek help for a "sleeping disorder" - the same time Britney Spears was being treated at the hospital. But Wilson - who plays Dr. Miranda Bailey on the TV show - insists her colleague is recovering well. She says, "Everybody goes through stuff. It's no different than anybody else in the world. We just happen to be in the public eye... Justin's doing just fine." And another of Chambers' co-stars, James Pickens Jr., who recently spoke to the 37-year-old actor, adds: "(Justin) just needed a break. He said: 'Man, I'm fine.'"
Burton Dispute With Ex Drags On

Hollywood director Tim Burton's attempts to settle a legal dispute with ex-girlfriend Lisa Marie out of court have failed. The pair will now meet at Los Angeles Superior Court in the summer, over Marie's claims she was cheated out of assets Burton promised her during their ten-year relationship, which ended in 2001. The former Calvin Klein model sued Burton in 2006 claiming he promised they would "combine their efforts and earnings and share equally any and all" accumulated property. She also claimed he promised to financially support her for the rest of her life. Burton reportedly gave Marie $5 million to sign a contract releasing him from any further claims to his assets. He then countersued her last September seeking a court declaration binding her to the agreement. Marie appeared in a number of Burton's films including 2001's Planet Of The Apes, on which he met his current partner, Helena Bonham Carter. The couple had their second child, daughter Indiana, in December.
Blanchett Gives Eulogy To Ledger at Memorial Service

Actress Cate Blanchett and Heath Ledger's parents paid tribute to the late actor with moving eulogies at a memorial service in his hometown of Perth, Australia on Saturday. More than 600 family members, friends and fans gathered to bid farewell to the Brokeback Mountain star, where his I'm Not There co-star Blanchett gave a funny and touching eulogy about their time spent together. Mourners watched a photo montage dedicated to Ledger's family and daughter Matilda, his two-year-old with former fiance Michelle Williams. The actress was in attendance but did not bring Matilda to the service at Penrhos College, a private girls' school. Ledger's father Kim addressed the media earlier in the day to ask for privacy as the family attended a private funeral service at Fremantle Cemetery, where the body was cremated. He told reporters, "It's a pretty sad time and we're finding it difficult to cope by ourselves, let alone cope with everybody around the world. Having said that we do really appreciate the outpouring and the emotional support from all over the world, which, suffice to say, we're luckier than most families, most families that are in our position, our grieving position, don't have that kind of support. So thank you all very much. That's all I've got to say." Ledger was found dead at his New York apartment on January 22, aged just 28. Toxicology results released on Wednesday revealed he was killed by an accidental overdose of prescribed medication.
Cage To Sue Turner Over "False" Book Claims

Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has begun legal proceedings against his Peggy Sue Got Married co-star Kathleen Turner after she accused him of drunk driving and theft in her new autobiography. In the autobiography, Send Yourself Roses, the 53-year-old insists Cage went to great lengths to disobey his uncle and the director of the 1986 comedy, Francis Ford Coppola - and even got in trouble with the police while filming. Turner writes, "Everything Francis wanted him (Cage) to do, he went against to show that he wasn't under his uncle's wing. Which was ridiculous. Oh, that stupid voice of his and the fake teeth! Honestly, I cringe to think about it. He caused so many problems. He was arrested twice for drunk driving and, I think, once for stealing a dog. He'd come across a Chihuahua he liked and stuck it in his jacket." On Friday Cage, 44, has issued libel proceedings against the actress at the High Court in London. A spokesman for the actor says, "The libel action follows false allegations that appear in the forthcoming autobiography. As legal proceedings have been commenced, it would be inappropriate to comment further."
Lohan Joins Hearing Loss Campaign

Hollywood actress Lindsay Lohan has joined Amy Winehouse and Annie Lennox to become the latest celebrity to sign up to a hearing loss awareness campaign - posing for singer-turned-photographer Bryan Adams. The star has been snapped for the Hear The World campaign, which has also seen Joss Stone and Moby hold their hands to their ears in striking campaign images. Harry Belafonte is another celebrity who was keen to join the promotional drive as he has been affected by hearing loss for several years, insisting it is imperative that people are more aware of the condition. He says, "Good hearing is extremely important. It has a lot of impact on personality. I noticed (when my hearing got worse) that my voice changed, and I had to speak more loudly. People thought that I was speaking more aggressively, and I didn't mean to be aggressive at all. I just think people should be very, very conscious and protective of their hearing."
Delta Burke Not in Psychiatric Hospital

A representative for American TV star Delta Burke has denied she checked into a psychiatric hospital to seek mental health treatment. The 51-year-old actress - who is famed for her role in 1980s TV comedy Designing Women - was reported to have checked into hospital to help cure her acute obsessive compulsive disorder and "hoarding." However, Gerald McRaney, her husband, insists she is not in a psychiatric institution. He tells People.com, "Delta is in a clinic - not a psych ward - to adjust medication. This is something she does one or twice a year. The tabloids have blown it up as if she's landed in a mental institution. It's not true." And McRaney is unsure how long the actress will remain at the facility. He adds, "Based on past experience, it's anywhere from three days to two weeks. They eliminate everything and then monitor her as they reintroduce the same drugs or new drugs, then see how she responds."
Knightley Auctions 'Atonement' Dress

Actress Keira Knightley is auctioning the much-hyped green dress she wore in Oscar-nominated movie Atonement to raise funds for a children's charity. The gown the 22-year-old's character wears in the romance's pivotal library sex scene is up for sale on the Clothes Off Our Back Foundation website. The non-profit organization hopes to raise charity cash from the auction. Proceeds will go to Variety - The Children's Charity Of Southern California. Bidding, which currently stands at $3,000, will end on March 1.
