'There Will Be Blood' Tops Critics Awards
There Will Be Blood has been hailed as the Best Picture of the Year for 2007 by the National Society of Film Critics. The movie, which was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, beat competition from Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's No Country For Old Men and Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell And The Butterfly to take the award, while he beat the same filmmakers for the Best Director prize. There Will Be Blood was also praised for Daniel Day-Lewis' portrayal of an oil-hungry businessman, winning him the honor for Best Actor. Best Actress went to Julie Christie for her starring role in Away From Her, while Best Supporting awards were awarded to Casey Affleck for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Cate Blanchett for I'm Not There. Hollywood Stars To Boycott Golden Globes

Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts, Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp look set to boycott this Sunday's Golden Globes ceremony to show their support to striking writers. Actors represented by the Screen Actors' Guild (SAG) are in "unanimous agreement" not to ignore the plight of the Writers Guild of America union members, who are picketing over royalties. Announcing the union's decision on Friday, SAG president, Alan Rosenberg, said, "After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross WGA (Writers' Guild of America) picket lines." In response to the boycott action, the WGA members thanked the SAG for its "solidarity and support." Other stars nominated for gongs at the prestigious ceremony include George Clooney, John Travolta, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett and Jodie Foster - all of whom are unlikely to appear at the awards show if the WGA members do not reach an agreement with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the Golden Globes, in time for next Sunday. Knightley, who is up for Best Actress for her starring role in Atonement, is particularly supportive of the strike, because of her playwright mother, Sharman Macdonald. A representative for the British beauty confirms: "If the strike is still in place then Keira won't cross a picket line as her mother is a writer."
Witherspoon Is Most-Liked Female Star

Hollywood beauty Reese Witherspoon has been named the most-likeable female celebrity in a new poll. The Walk The Line Oscar winner, 30, beat Jennifer Aniston to the top spot with 74 pe cent to the Rumor Has It actress' 70 percent in the survey of more than 1,000 women aged 13 and over. Participants were asked to judge which celebrities, from a list of the 10 women who regularly graced magazine covers and gossip columns in 2007, they found the most appealing, confident, glamorous, interesting and over-exposed, among other qualities. Angelina Jolie came in third position with 53 percent, closely followed by singer/actress Jennifer Lopez in fourth place with 52 percent. Tom Cruise's wife, Katie Holmes, also makes it into the top five with a mere 32 percent. Meanwhile, on the other end of the scale, Paris Hilton edged out Britney Spears to be voted the least appealing star with a 9 percent likeability rating to the singer's 11, while the hotel heiress topped the list for most over-exposed celebrity with 75 percent to Spears' 68 percent.
Cruise Is Scientology's Second-in-Command, Says Biographer
Tom Cruise has become the Church Of Scientology's second-in-command, according to a new biography. British writer Andrew Morton, best known for his books about the late Diana, Princess Of Wales and David Beckham and Victoria Beckham, claims the 45-year-old Hollywood superstar's life has been taken over by the controversial religion. In Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, Morton alleges the Scientology religion, founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, relies so heavily on Cruise's celebrity to recruit followers, the actor is now considered second only to leader David Miscavige. Morton's book claims Cruise's movie career is built around the Church Of Scientology's needs and that he carefully selected his wife Katie Holmes based on what is best for the religion. However, Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields insists the biography is full of errors as a result of Morton's poor research. He tells British newspaper the Mail On Sunday: "(Tom) has been told about it and naturally he knows there are a bunch of lies about him. It's a boring, poorly researched book by a man who never talked to anyone involved in Tom Cruise's life or anyone close to him." Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography is due for release in the U.S. on January 15.
McGraw Visited Spears in Hospital, Taping Special Show
Britney Spears' ongoing personal problems will be the focus of Tuesday's edition of Dr. Phil McGraw's television show, after the therapist visited the troubled singer in the hospital on Saturday. McGraw chatted to Spears as she checked out of Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was admitted on Thursday, following a stand-off with police at her Beverly Hills mansion when she refused to hand over her boys to ex-husband Kevin Federline after a scheduled visit. Spears was temporarily held at Cedars-Sinai under Section 5150, meaning medics had reason to believe she is a danger to herself or others - and McGraw insists the 26-year-old is in urgent need of professional help. He says, "My meeting with Britney and some family members (on Saturday) morning in her room at Cedars leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention. She was released moments before my arrival and was packing when I entered the room. We visited for about an hour before I walked with her to her car." McGraw will tape the Spears-themed show on Monday; it will air on Tuesday. It's not thought Spears will be contributing in any way. On Friday, a judge awarded Federline "sole legal custody and sole physical custody" of Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, one, at an emergency hearing. The custody order lasts until January 14.
Winehouse Cleared of Bribery Charges
Amy Winehouse will not face any charges in relation to a bribery plot involving her jailed husband Blake Fielder-Civil. The Rehab singer was released on bail in December after turning herself in at a London police station for questioning on the suspicion of perverting the course of justice. Fielder-Civil is currently being held on remand at London's Pentonville Prison and is awaiting trial on a similar charge after he attempted to fix the outcome of his trial for grievous bodily harm. He is alleged to have assaulted barman James King in June last year, and stands accused of trying to pay off King with $400,000 and a free holiday in return for withdrawing his statement. Winehouse was initially believed to have offered finance for the deal, but the charges against her were dropped this week due to lack of evidence. Meanwhile, Fielder-Civil has been placed in solitary confinement after prison guards found him getting drunk behind bars and making calls on a cell phone he had smuggled into the jail, reports British newspaper the News of the World.
Anderson's Divorce Proceeding Again
Pamela Anderson's on/off marriage to new husband Rick Salomon appears to be off again - the actress has served her spouse with divorce papers. The former Baywatch star first filed legal papers for the dissolution of her then-two-month-old marriage on December 14, citing irreconcilable differences. Two days later, Anderson, who wed her longtime friend Salomon in Las Vegas on October 6, claimed the couple was "working things Out." However, according to CelebTV.com, Anderson's lawyer filed a proof of summons document last Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. The documentation shows Salomon was served with divorce papers on December 15. He has 30 days to file a response to the 40-year-old's divorce claim. Anderson has previously been married to rockers Tommy Lee and Kid Rock, while Salomon's ex-wives are Elizabeth Daily and Shannen Doherty. Anderson's marriage to Kid Rock was similarly short-lived - they divorced after less than six months as husband and wife.
Brown Cannot Overturn Houston Divorce Terms After Court No-Show
Bobby Brown has jeopardized his attempt to challenge the terms of his divorce from ex-wife Whitney Houston after failing to show up in court on Friday. Brown was expected to appear before Superior Court Judge Claudia Silbar at an Orange County, California, court this week, but neither party - or their respective lawyers - turned up. As a result of his no-show, Silbar has refused a request from Brown to appeal for spousal support and shared custody of their 14-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown was not given any financial settlement and had only visitation rights after Houston won a default judgment in April 2007. Court spokeswoman Carole Levitsky said on Friday, "His motion was denied because there were no appearances or phone calls from Mr. Brown today for a scheduled hearing. As of now, there are no more pending court dates in this case." The judge also used Friday's hearing to deny a motion filed in December by Brown's attorney, Stacey Phillips, to be released as his counsel because of a series of rows with her client. That request was thrown out of court because Phillips herself had also failed to attend the hearing. A representative for Brown has yet to comment.
