Doctor Who Review: “The Rings Of Akhaten” (Series 7, Episode 8)

Last week Doctor Who  returned with “The Bells of Saint John“, a mighty fine episode that re-introduced our new companion, Clara Oswald. Sure, it had its flaws, but in the end, what mattered was that it made me really happy that the show was back. This week, “The Rings of Akhaten” kept me happy as the episode balanced between keeping the mystery of Clara alive while delivering a dang good Doctor Who story.

I’m glad to see that there is a consistency in quality so far this series. The problem that I felt was present in both Series 6 and the first half of Series 7 was that while the episodes were brilliant on an individual level, it didn’t work that well as a whole season. The second half of Series 7 doesn’t seem to be facing that problem though. Of course it’s still early as we’re only two episodes in, »

Fast & Furious 7 Director Short List Revealed

Earlier this week we reported that Justin Lin will not be directing Fast & Furious 7, despite the fact that everyone thought he would. With the film set to shoot this Summer, we told you that Universal was scrambling to find a director and today, we have a rumored short list which contains the names of several directors who may take on the job.

If this short list is to be believed, then the studio currently has their eye on Jeff Wadlow, Brad Furman and Harald Zwart. If you’re not familiar with any of those names, we won’t blame you.

Wadlow, though he directed Never Back Down and Cry_Wolf, two somewhat enjoyable films, he won’t really be on anyone’s radar till his next film, Kick-Ass 2, hits theatres this Summer. That film is also a Universal property, which means that they obviously like what they see if »

Hercules 3D Will Star Twilight Actor Kellan Lutz

Currently, Hollywood has two Hercules projects in the works. The first is simply titled Hercules and will be directed by Brett Ratner. Dwayne Johnson will headline the film and he will be supported by Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes and John Hurt. Then there’s Hercules 3D, coming to us from Renny Harlin.

Up until now, there hadn’t been any news on casting for the film but this week, Heat Vision is reporting that Kellan Lutz of Twilight fame (he played Emmett Cullen), has been cast in the titular role.

“It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history — and Kellan has exactly that, personality. He’s not afraid to explore the strengths and vulnerabilities of the character, and he impressed me with his passion and heart,” said Harlin.

The film, which is being scripted by Harlin, Sean Hood (Conan The Barbarian (2011)) and Giulio Steve, »

Jane Got A Gun Recruits Oscar Nominee Bradley Cooper

Jane Got A Gun. In truth, a gun was about the only thing Jane seemed to own for an extended period of time. Over the last month or so, the film has undergone several internal shifts both in the acting and directing camps. First, we had the exit of Michael Fassbender, then, in a bizarre turn of events, the director Lynne Ramsay left the film after citing production problems which also prompted Jude Law’s departure, too. It’s been a bumpy four weeks for the Western, but now Deadline has reported that Bradley Cooper has been cast to steer the production back on track.

Scott Pictures, the film’s co-producing studio hopes the Oscar nominated actor will instil a sense of stability to the wayward project. Cooper will step directly into the role of the film’s antagonist and will act as the overarching threat for Natalie Portman’s titular Jane. »

Crimson Peak Adds Jessica Chastain

5 April 2013 5:22 PM, PDT

It appears Jessica Chastain isn’t content to only work with Guillermo del Toro the producer, as the Oscar-nominated actress has now joined the director’s upcoming haunted house flick Crimson Peak.

Chastain recently starred in the del Toro-produced Mama, which surprised many moviegoers by actually being quite good. If you know her from nothing else, you’ll recognize her from last year’s Zero Dark Thirty for which she received a best actress nomination. She’s a talented actress who has really blossomed over the last couple years, and no film is going to be worse for having added her.

The cast was exciting enough when it was just Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam, but with the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch and now Chastain, this is shaping up to be a star-studded film that should really have horror fans excited.

It was originally assumed that Stone and Hunnam would be the leads, »

Tomorrow You’re Gone Review

5 April 2013 1:53 PM, PDT

It’s extremely hard to make a movie where almost nothing happens and still have an interesting and entertaining result. Director David Jacobson clearly didn’t know just how difficult of a task this is when he was making Tomorrow You’re Gone, as his final result shows nothing happening in a very bland film.

Charlie Rankin (Stephen Dorff) is out of prison, but still indebted to a man who supposedly saved his life behind bars (Willem Dafoe). Charlie’s first task to make things even is to carry out a murder, but things are complicated when he meets a woman named Florence (Michelle Monaghan), who instantly falls for him and tries to pry the good out of his tough exterior.

It isn’t as if this is a film where the filmmaker finds the characters much more interesting than the audience does and that is the cause of the dull moments, »

Evil Dead Review

5 April 2013 1:45 PM, PDT

The wait is over Deadites – April 5th is finally here. For some it’s been a grueling wait, sitting anxiously as every blood-soaked image and awe-inspiring trailer teased what could possibly be a savior of the current remake fad, while others sat grumpily, scoffing at even the notion that Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead could top what’s revered as one of the most famous cult-classics in horror history. If you read any of my news coverage or features regarding the film, you’d know I was one of the outspoken optimists who had no problem hiding his blatant excitement for everything Alvarez was laying down, so now the question is posed – was all the hype worth it?

Before I jump into my spiel, you all know Evil Dead isn’t supposed to be funny, right? No, not all do, because I’ve read a slew of uneducated reviews stating »

Hannibal Series Premiere Review: “Aperitif” (Season 1, Episode 1)

5 April 2013 1:04 PM, PDT

With this fresh and gorgeous reboot, Thomas Harris fans are graced, at long last, with a proper portrait of perhaps literature’s greatest detective, FBI agent Will Graham. Maybe. But either way, Hannibal is promising to be mighty delicious. Mads Mikkelsen will see to that.

Aptly named “Apéritif” (a wine drunk to whet the appetite), Episode 1 spends its time familiarizing us with our daunting environs and the dedicated individuals who populate it (dedicated both for better and for worse). Wasting nary a moment, writers Bryan Fuller and Harris himself introduce us to Will (Hugh Dancy) by accompanying him into a lovely suburban home turned blood-spattered crime scene: a calculated double homicide with mercifully unnamed intentions for the wife.

As Will evaluates the proceedings, they rewind until he stands in the killer’s shoes, then replay as he experiences them through the killer’s perspective, verbalizing each careful action, articulating its »

Two Brand New Stills From Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium

5 April 2013 11:51 AM, PDT

As a project, I have a lot of respect for Elysium. Though the film is slated for release on August 9th in the States, the studio and director Neill Blomkamp have favoured a less-is-more style of advertising. It’s effectively garnered a sense of excitement for the film without risking overexposure and today we get a glimpse of two new stills from the film (via Judao).

Elysium will take place in the year 2159 and the story is two-fold. Humanity has been divided by social classes which leave the poor doomed on our war-torn, ravaged planet while the upper echelons of society live a luxurious life in the eponymous space craft orbiting Earth. From her ivory tower, Jodie Foster plays the villainous Secretary Rhodes looking to uphold all forms of social and xenophobic ideologies; however, ex-convict Max (Matt Damon) is dying and desperate to make his way to Elysium to save his own life, »

The Office Review: “Promos” (Season 9, Episode 18)

5 April 2013 11:49 AM, PDT

The Office begins its final run of episodes this week with the latest episode titled, “Promos”. It sees the characters react to the promos airing for the documentary that is The Office, and revolves mostly around Dwight, Pam, Angela, Oscar and their storylines. There’s also plenty of throwbacks and references for long-time fans to catch.

The cold opens are one of my favorite parts of the show, but this time, there’s not much to see. Phyllis has started listening to the audiobook version of Fifty Shades of Grey in the office and makes it uncomfortable for everyone there. Leave it to Dwight to fix the problem as he pours cold water over her, and does the same to Andy later on when he starts listening to it himself. “Don’t worry guys, she’s no longer horny,” announces Dwight. A very humorous opening, but not hilarious, which was »

5 Recent Movies Whose Popular Acclaim Makes No Sense

5 April 2013 9:27 AM, PDT

I’ve come to terms with Argo being declared by a number of governing bodies including the oh-so-prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as the Best Picture of 2012. It’s ok. I watched it again, and it’s fine, whatever. A well told story that’s engaging throughout and has a conclusion that stretches the definition of “true story” but is fairly well conceived and executed and all that. It’s good. It’s fine. It deserves to be among the year’s acclaimed movies.

I also think I get why it received all this acclaim long after it had been released. In what seems to be the victorious narrative, Ben Affleck was left out of the Best Director category when the Oscar nominations were released, and this led to a flood of sympathy votes for his darling little movie to win every award that came after. Stitches Review

5 April 2013 8:44 AM, PDT

I can’t wait until I one day own a production company that gives underground and foreign horror films a proper Us wide release, but until then I’m going to sound like a bitchy, hipster, broken record complaining how mainstream horror is making a mockery of the genre right now and so many “dangerous” gems get straight to Blu-Ray/VOD releases.

A little Irish release named Stitches is the latest movie I’ve been forced to watch on my laptop after an iTunes rent, only to witness a full-blown horror/comedy epic that demands a proper cinematic viewing (super-comfy sofa, a large TV in the range of 50″ or so, an ultra-comfy blanket). How the f#ck was I forced to watch The Last Exorcism Part II in theaters, yet could barely find a rentable version of Stitches?!

Although I was stuck with a pair of headphones and my manageable laptop screen, »

6 Souls Review

5 April 2013 6:49 AM, PDT

For me, the horror bug is one I’ve been unable to kick in all the years since I’ve been infatuated with cinema, in spite of the fact that the genre has slid significantly from grace (and general watchability). Last year alone the four worst films I saw (of 145) were horror flicks and it’s come to the point where scouring the indie circles is close to the only way to find fare of note. I had no expectations when I ventured into 6 Souls, from the fact it hasn’t seen the light of the big screen despite being shelved since 2010 to the generally toxic reviews it had already received. The signs weren’t promising.

Imagine my amazement (as in check as it may have been) that 6 Souls, is actually far from a total disaster. It is in fact a compulsively watchable effort. More than I can say for most films of this ilk, »

Before Disney’s Axe, Star Wars 1313 Centred On Boba Fett

5 April 2013 5:31 AM, PDT

The curious case of Star Wars 1313 rumbles on today. Following Wednesday’s closure of LucasArts by Disney, a source over at Kotaku has revealed that just before the game’s showcase at last year’s E3 conference, head honcho George Lucas shifted the story’s focus to Boba Fett – the masked bounty hunter.

The announcement of the game itself was one that stoked excitement across the massive fan base back in June. Star Wars 1313 was a visually impressive shooter that looked poised to explore the rich underbelly of the sprawling universe. And, in light of this recent news, if the game did in fact center on Boba Fett when released, you could well imagine fan boys racing to pre-order the title faster than a T-65 X-wing.

Unfortunately, after the initial reveal of LucasArts’ latest game at E3 2012, fans experienced radio silence until Disney’s acquisition in October of last year, »

Watch The Full Length Trailer For The Carrie Remake

5 April 2013 2:21 AM, PDT

The upcoming Carrie remake has delivered its first full-length theatrical trailer today, following on from the first teaser which hit late last year. From the moment the casting announcements were made, pitting Kick-Ass star Chloe Grace Moretz against the brilliant Julianne Moore, the movie has garnered attention from beyond the boundaries of its genre. This latest trailer expands on the talents of Moore and Moretz under the direction of Kimberly Peirce and offers up further insight into the world of Carrie White. You can check it out below.

Where the teaser trailer tempted us with a slow crane shot of the final bloody showdown, the theatrical preview opts for a two-and-a-half minute mini narrative. Peirce’s intentions for the film to remain loyal to Stephen King’s source novel are apparent in the clip. Carrie’s realisation of her telepathy as she sits on her bed surrounded by hovering books »

Archer Review: “Sea Tunt: Part 1″ (Season 4, Episode 12)

4 April 2013 9:56 PM, PDT

Keeping with the theme, the first episode of Archer‘s two-part season finale includes another charade, this one more convoluted than all the rest. In order to fund his philanthropic endeavors, Cheryl’s brother Cecil lures her and her Isis cohorts aboard his “chopper-saurus” in an elaborate ruse to get recorded testimony verifying what we’ve all known since the pilot, that Cheryl is (to use a Weird Al lyric) “two fries short of a Happy Meal.”

This is a two-parter, however, alerting the viewer that another twist is on its way, or else there would be no second part. As Lana points out, Cecil could’ve called them to court and the end result would’ve been the same. Why fool them with the promise of a nuclear weapon Malory could ransom back to the United States?

It’s left a smidgen vague, the writers making us connect the »

New Shortlist For Who Will Wear The Glass Slipper In Cinderella

4 April 2013 4:57 PM, PDT

So, you know how Disney has had great success in doing live-action retellings of iconic stories (Alice In Wonderland, Oz The Great And Powerful)? You know how no one seemed to like those two films, yet they made massive amounts of money worldwide? Well, they will carry on the tradition. Disney plans to begin filming a live-action version of Cinderella with director Kenneth Branagh at the helm. And now we have a shortlist of actresses being considered for the title role.

While rumors have circulated about both Emma Watson and Amanda Seyfried taking on the part of the dust-laden princess, the current shortlist is a bit less well-known: Bella Heathcoat, Lily James and Margot Robbie are all being considered.

Yeah, I never heard of them either. Heathcoate appeared in Dark Shadows, Lily James was in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and Downton Abbey, and Robbie has a part in »

Rumor: Xbox 720 Requires An Internet Connection To Start Games

4 April 2013 3:09 PM, PDT

According to a new Kotaku report, multiple unnamed sources have confirmed recent rumors that claimed Microsoft is planning to make the next generation Xbox (Xbox 720/Durango) an “always-on, always connected console“. Additionally, these sources are stating that the console will require users to first connect the system to the internet before they can run any software.

“Unless something has changed recently [as of two weeks ago]” the unnamed industry source wrote, “Durango consumer units must have an active internet connection to be used.”

“If there isn’t a connection, no games or apps can be started,” the source added. “If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time–currently three minutes, if I remember correctly–the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started.”

While this should definitely be considered a rumor, it is also the latest in a long line of reports that suggest Microsoft is arrogantly positioning the Xbox 720 (Durango »

5 Characters From The Vampire Diaries That You Wish Hadn’t Been Staked

4 April 2013 2:55 PM, PDT

If there’s one thing that The Vampire Diaries always delivers on, besides the promise of vampire love triangles, it’s a regular dose of death.

Although occasionally it happens to a human character (and no, being turned into a vampire doesn’t count), most of the time it’s someone of the supernatural persuasion that bites the dust. The writers of The Vampire Diaries have turned what could have been a formulaic teen drama into a game of ‘guess who’s dying this week,’ leaving us speechless season after season.

It would be easy to play it safe and bring in a slew of supporting characters that are up to the task, but the team behind Tvd rarely goes that route. The Vampire Diaries specializes in pulling at our heartstrings. The plots compel us to become invested in these characters and then just when we think they are crucial to the story, »
