Kimberly Peirce To Helm ‘The Brand’, Alessandro Camon-Scripted Drama On Aryan Brotherhood’s Violent Prison Reign

Exclusive: Kimberly Peirce, who helmed Boys Don’t Cry and most recently the Sony/MGM remake Carrie with Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore, is about as gutsy a female director as you’ll find this side of Kathryn Bigelow. She has signed on to tackle The Brand, a hard edged drama scripted by Alessandro Camon (The Messenger), based on a 2004 New Yorker article by David Grann. The film is about the notorious Aryan Brotherhood prison gang. Despite seeing leaders consigned to solitary confinement in the most secure prisons, the gang still managed to control drug dealing, prostitution and other crimes in maximum security prisons, setting policy and ordering killings through secret communication modes that were akin to morse code. Universal Acquires Duane Adler Talent Show Pitch; George Tillman Jr To Helm

Exclusive: Universal Pictures today closed a mid-to-high six-figure deal for an untitled pitch that State Street will produce. It will be written by Duane Adler, who hatched the Step Up franchise and Save The Last Dance, with George Tillman Jr. attached to direct and his partner Bob Teitel to produce. The pitch is the story of a failed song writer who returns home to Chicago to lead a group of at risk youth in their annual talent show. The tone is Pitch Perfect meets 8 Mile. R.I.P. Jane Nebel Henson, Who Helped Pull The Strings To Form The Muppets

Jane Nebel Henson died in her Connecticut home today after a long battle with cancer. A memorial mass is planned for next week. She met Jim Henson in a puppetry class at the University of Maryland and soon after became an integral creative and business partner with him to form the Muppets. They began performing together on NBC’s D.C. affiliate station Wrc-tv while she was an undergraduate. Their show, Sam And Friends, took off and soon they were doing guest spots on Steve Allen’s Tonight Show. They were married in 1959, and she gave birth to Lisa Henson, Cheryl Henson, Brian Henson, John Henson and Heather Henson. Brian is currently chairman and Lisa is CEO of The Jim Henson Co, which continues to generate Muppets films. Toni Collette, Jean Reno Set To Star In ‘Hector And The Search For Happiness’

Exclusive: Toni Collette and Jean Reno are set to star in Hector And The Search For Happiness, a romantic comedy feature directed by Peter Chelsom that follows a psychiatrist as he searches the globe for the definition of happiness. The addition of Collette and Reno completes the casting and the film has just commenced principal photography. Collette and Reno join a stellar cast that includes Simon Pegg, who will play Hector, an eccentric London psychiatrist in crisis; Rosamund Pike; Stellan Skarsgård; Christopher Plummer; Desiree Zurowski; and Jakob Davies. Chelsom and Tinker Lindsay wrote the screenplay, adapted from the novel of the same name by Francis Lelord. DreamWorks, Participant Movie Focuses On Catholic Church Sex Scandal Uncovered By Boston Globe

Breaking: DreamWorks Studios and Participant Media have acquired feature film rights to the story of the Catholic Church’s decades-long cover-up of its pedophile priests in Massachusetts. The scandal was uncovered by a year-long investigation by the Boston Globe. Tom McCarthy has signed on to direct and co-write the script with Josh Singer. Anonymous Content’s Michael Sugar and Steve Golin and Rocklin/Faust’s Nicole Rocklin and Blye Faust will produce. David Mizner, who originally brought the project to the producers, will serve as a consultant and associate producer. King and Jeff Skoll will serve as executive producers.
