New title and synopsis for Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show

Despite the fact that Joss Whedon completed filming on the pilot episode for S.H.I.E.L.D. back in February, we're still waiting for news on whether ABC has decided to place a full season order for the first live-action small screen spin-off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the signs do appear to be positive; just this weekend, it was been revealed that J. August Richards (Angel) has been cast in a "super top-secret role", and now ABC has released a brand new synopsis for the show, which is now going by the title of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.:

Joss Whedon (Marvel’S The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) shows us not all heroes are super with Marvel’S Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fresh from his role in the summer’s box office smash, Marvel’S The Avengers, Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns to the worldwide »

Comic Book Review - Northlanders Vol. 7: The Icelandic Trilogy

Robb Ghag reviews Northlanders Vol. 7: The Icelandic Trilogy...

"In this final epic from issues #42-50, young Ulf Hauksson takes over his clan’s settlement in a new land before moving on to a violent civil war that followed years later. "

In this final presentation of Northlanders we follow a family of immigrants and the first settlers of Iceland in 871Ad. The story is generational and begins the legacy of the Haukssons, the first ‘crime family’ to emerge in this new world.

Seeking land, freedom and a new way of life, father, mother and son arrive foraging a new life. It is of course rough going in the horrible conditions, but the Hauksson clan begin to thrive, until they are met with their arch rival family the Belgarssons. And so a family rivalry akin to the Hatfield and the McCoys begins in this new desolate world. The Hauksson’s take »

Late to the Show - Skins (1st Generation)

In the next instalment of the 'Late to the Show' series, Luke Addison looks at the first generation of Skins...

Having recently discussed the show with a friend of mine, I decided to revisit each generation of Skins once more, before the final iteration airs in July, supposedly wrapping up some of the stories from years gone by. Here’s the first of three articles in my Skins series of 'Late to the Show'...

Skins was the first show created for E4, and along with it, the start of a crude, semi-realistic portrayal of teenage life, with the likes of The Inbetweeners and Fresh Meat following. It was unlike any other show being televised at the time, with the show deciding to take a rather sombre and gritty look at teenage life, highlighting the issues teenager’s face as well as the parties, casual sex and violence many adults think their children regularly partake in. »

New animated Star Wars show in development

It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride for Star Wars fans following Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm last year, beginning with the shock announcement that the House of Mouse was to develop a new sequel trilogy starting with Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, in addition to several standalone Star Wars features. However, it hasn't all been good news coming out of the galaxy far, far away, with Disney deciding to close the video game development company LucasArts earlier this week - consigning the planned Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313 games to history - while last month saw Lucasfilm bringing an end the hit animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as well as placing Seth Green's animated comedy series Star Wars Detours on indefinite hold (that last one's probably not a bad thing, judging by the trailer).

The Flickering Myth Reaction to the Only God Forgives trailer

The Flickering Myth writing team look at the trailer for Only God Forgives...

Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling really made a name for themselves with 2011's Drive and now they are back together again with the first red band trailer for Only God Forgives. And as one would expect, this is very dark, moody and stylish, set within the murky Bangkok underworld of Thai boxing and prostitution.

Here's the synopsis, and you can watch the trailer here:

"Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian [Ryan Gosling] killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty."

Given the team-up of Refn and Gosling and the pretty-gripping trailer, it should come as no surprise that the Flickering Myth writing team got talking about Only God Forgives and what we can expect...

Christopher Eccleston won't appear in Doctor Who 50th anniversary special

With cameras rolling on the 50th anniversary special of Doctor Who this week, there have been rumours in the press that Christopher Eccleston had pulled out of the project just as filming was about to begin. However, Doctor Who News is reporting that while it's true Eccleston won't be lining up alongside Matt Smith and David Tennant's incarnations of the Time Lord in the special, the actor was never contracted to appear to begin with.

"Chris met with Steven Moffat a couple of times to talk about Steven's plans for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary episode," an unnamed BBC spokesperson is quoted as stating. "After careful thought, Chris decided not to be in the episode. He wishes the team all the best." Nevertheless, the article goes on to suggest that an appearance from the Ninth Doctor is not beyond the realms of possibility, suggesting that archive footage from the series may be used instead. »

Movie Review - A Late Quartet (2013)

A Late Quartet, 2013.

Directed by Yaron Zilberman.

Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, Imogen Poots, and Mark Ivanir.

Synopsis:

The cellist in a string quartet is diagnosed with Parkinson's as they prepare for their final tour.

The film's title, A Late Quartet, relates to the string compositions Beethoven produced near the end of his life, during his flurry of output once his hearing began to deteriorate (cheers Wikipedia). It's a name with double meaning.

Peter Mitchell (Christopher Walken), the cellist in a classical string quartet (there's the first meaning), starts to add a bit too much vibrato to rehearsals. His fingers are a little slower and shakier than last year. The upcoming season is the quartet's 25th together. It's a big deal. They're tremendously successful. They had a documentary special made about them (which is wonderfully diegetic) and appear on a number of classical music magazine front covers. »

Comic Book Review - Thanos Rising #1

6 April 2013 1:23 AM, PDT

Robb Ghag reviews Thanos Rising #1...

"The vile face left movie audiences in shock after last summer's Marvel Studios' 'The Avengers' movie, but who is this eerily disturbing villain? Thanos rises as the unrivaled rogue of wretchedness in this gripping tale of tragedy, deceit and destiny. Where did this demi-god of death and destruction come from and...more importantly what does he want?"

The first thing I’ll say about this book is this: Is there anything Skottie Young can’t draw and make look amazing? I think the answer is no, but to be sure you should probably follow him on Instagram @skottie.

Since the release of The Avengers last summer and those fateful seconds where Thanos turns and cracks an evil smile, people have been asking: Who is Thanos? Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi bring us the origin of Thanos right from his birth to his childhood years »

Comic Book Review - Age of Ultron #4

6 April 2013 1:21 AM, PDT

Robb Ghag reviews Age of Ultron #4 (spoilers ahead)...

"The impossible has happened! The Earth has been taken by Ultron. What few super hero survivors there are try desperately to stay alive. And it is Luke Cage who discovers the secret behind Ultron's victory over all of mankind. A secret that will have fans of Marvel comics arguing for years to come!"

From the last issue’s cliff-hanger it was obvious the book had picked up, however slightly. As I mentioned issue #2 was full of dialogue and mysterious plot points that I still don’t fully understand. Diving into issue #3 the infamous plan was set into motion, which eventually revealed Vision was somehow connected to the Age of Ultron. What was the real shock was that he was on the side of Ultron and not the Avengers.

Picking up right where issue #3 leaves off, Luke Cage learns that Ultron is controlling the pas from the future, »

Sons of Anarchy Season 5 - Episode 9 Review

6 April 2013 12:56 AM, PDT

Paul Risker reviews the ninth episode of Sons of Anarchy season 5....

A solemn family reunion and a plan that doesn’t come together…

In what was not an uncommon occurrence, the previous episode of Sons of Anarchy closed on a typically dramatic note, at least as far as the fortunes of Chibs and Gemma was concerned.

Chibs was left for dead at the side of the road by Frankie Diamonds. Meanwhile Jax offered Gemma an ultimatum to repair the ties with her family, whose pleas that she has gone cold turkey fell on deaf ears. Instead Jax plans to hold the automobile crash as leverage over her, turning her into a pawn to be used in his war with Clay. Jax needs proof that the Nomads were acting on his orders, and Jax instructs Gemma, "He'd do anything for you, let him in. Get his trust. I want you to be with him, »

Special Features - Superman III Scarred Me For Life

6 April 2013 12:55 AM, PDT

Continuing our Comic Book Movie month here at Flickering Myth, Jack Morris explains why Superman III scarred him for life...

Superman III was my first foray into comic book movies. I was shown it by my cousins who had it on VHS when we went to visit them in Leeds and it has forever stuck with me and scarred me for life! Not scarred in the way that movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine or Superman Returns have, in that I never want to watch them again, but in a way that even at 24 the image of Annie Ross’ character Vera getting sucked into the computer and transforming into a cyborg can still terrify me.

Whilst many may overlook the latter two sequels in the Superman franchise (and I personally cannot deny that Superman IV: The Quest for Peace doesn’t deserve the time of day), Superman III doesn’t deserve the flack it often receives. »

Bryan Singer tweets a new-look Beast from X-Men: Days of Future Past

6 April 2013 12:54 AM, PDT

Director Bryan Singer has been pretty active on Twitter during pre-production on his forthcoming X-Men sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past, and it seems he's also going to make good use of the social networking site during filming of the mutant superhero epic. Singer has just tweeted an image of who we presume to be Nicholas Hoult in full Beast make-up, which has completely dropped the feline design of X-Men: First Class in favour of a more traditional look...

So, filming hasn't even started, and Singer has already eclipsed anything we've seen from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 director Marc Webb and his series of unrevealing behind-the-scenes tweets from the set of the Sony superhero sequel. Maybe we'll see Webb firing back with a shot of Electro, although an electrician is probably more likely...

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to begin filming this month, with a cast that includes »

5 April 2013 4:00 PM, PDT

Guillermo del Toro might have plenty on his plate at the moment as he prepares to unleash the giant robots vs. giant monsters beat 'em up Pacific Rim this summer, but with a multitude of other projects on the horizon -including his planned Justice League Dark adaptation Heaven Sent and the already-announced Pacific Rim 2 - it seems he's wasting little time in prepping his next feature, the haunted house thriller Crimson Peak.

According to Variety, British actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) has entered negotiations to join the cast of the Victorian ghost tale, where he would join the already confirmed Emma Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) and del Toro's Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy).
