Since when are big budget monster movies bait for Oscar nominees? Godzilla already has a couple, but now Happy-go-Lucky star Sally Hawkins has been added to the stellar cast for the Gareth Edwards tentpole. It certainly bodes well for the movie.

TV Recap: “Hannibal” S01 E01 “Aperitif”

5 April 2013 4:12 PM, PDT

Considering the debacle that was Mockingbird Lane, I was fairly concerned with Bryan Fuller adapting Thomas Harris’ novels and bringing Dr. Hannibal Lecter to the small screen. But, lest I forget, Bryan Fuller’s also responsible for the brilliant Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls. Any concerns I had were alleviated three minutes into “Aperitif,” the pilot for NBC’s Hannibal, and so should yours. Directed by David Slade (Awake, 30 Days Of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Hannibal has some serious, stylized violence, but it works.

We open on Will Graham (Hugh Dancy, more on him later) at a bloody crime scene (there’s a lot of blood for an NBC show), where he sees the crime scene in reverse, as it happens, placing himself as a killer. It’s a little Dexter Morgan at a crime scene-y, except actually having Will Graham go through with the dirty deeds. The trippy sequence »

J. August Richards Hides Behind “Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D.”

5 April 2013 3:59 PM, PDT

Joss Whedon and company are keeping it in the family. J. August Richards, or Gunn from Angel fame, has joined the cast of Marvel’S S.H.I.E.L.D. in a top secret role. That means they haven’t come up with a name yet, or he’s actually someone from the comic book.

Richards wouldn’t have been my first choice from the Whedon-verse, but I love the idea of seeing more of them popping up, or joining the cast. To this point, other than Agent Coulson and Richards, Whedon and company have preferred relative unknowns.

Richards joins Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Ming-Na Wen and Chloe Bennet star in the ensemble. S.H.I.E.L.D. will be run by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Jeph Loeb.

Liam Hemsworth Is “The Raven”

5 April 2013 11:54 AM, PDT

It’s not official, but the feature film adaptation of a short film by Ricardo de Montreuil seems to have found its leading man in Liam Hemsworth.

He will play Chris Black in the sci-fi thriller. Ricardo de Montreuil will direct the feature from a Justin Marks penned screenplay. The film is described thusly: “The story follows the protagonist, Black, who winds up coming into possession of a power that could reshape society and that has caused those in control to hunt him down with extreme prejudice.”

Jessica Chastain Ignites “Crimson Peak” Cast

5 April 2013 11:43 AM, PDT

So, this Crimson Peak movie is starting to sound very, very good. We were already onboard when you put haunted house, ghosts and Guillermo Del Toro in the same sentence. Then Del Toro went out and got Charlie Hunnam, Benedict Cumberbatch and Emma Stone to head the cast. Today, he added to his embarrassment of riches, by adding the Academy favorite Jessica Chastain, who has dazzled in every movie she’s been in since 2011, with Take Shelter, The Tree Of Life, The Help, Zero Dark Thirty and (the Del Toro produced) Mama on her brilliant resume.

We don’t know who is playing what at this point, but the film is described simply: “The gothic horror story centers on a woman who discovers that her husband might not be whom he appears to be.” Legendary Pictures is spearheading the project. It’s a great time to be a horror fan. »

Jon Spaihts To Rewrite “The Black Hole” Remake

5 April 2013 11:33 AM, PDT

Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts has been hired to rewrite The Black Hole, a remake of the 1979 film. He takes over Pacific Rim’s Travis Beacham.

The film has been in development since 2009, and the original “followed a group of space explorers aboard the USS Palomino who come across a lost ship, the USS Cygnus, hovering outside a black hole. Inside the Cygnus, the explorers meet a scientist commanding an army of faceless robots, who explains that his crew deserted him as he planned to go through the black hole. The explorers soon discover that the robots are the remnants of the former crew and that the scientist has no intention of letting them leave.” It was the most expensive movie Disney had ever made as of 1979.

The film is set to be directed by Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski. »

Benedict Cumberbatch To Chance “Crimson Peak”

4 April 2013 4:14 PM, PDT

Guillermo Del Toro and Benedict Cumberbatch are both busy men. But at least now, they’ll be working together. Benedict Cumberbatch is the third person to join the cast of Del Toro’s next film, the haunted house thriller Crimson Peak.

He joins Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in the already great cast, though not much else is known beyond that. The film is the next on Del Toro’s plate, following Pacific Rim, which bows July 12th.

Cumberbatch adds this role to Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and of course his recurring work on BBC’s Sherlock, as well as a couple other film projects. »

Expect More Tyreese, Sasha And Beth In “The Walking Dead”

4 April 2013 10:03 AM, PDT

While there isn’t any new casting yet for the fourth season of The Walking Dead, obviously, three members of the cast have been promoted to regulars, promising a larger role in the post-apocalyptic days ahead. They would be Emily KinneyChad L. Coleman and Sonequa Martin-Green, who play Beth, Tyreese and Sasha, respectively. This probably means that at least 1 or 2 of them are doomed for death very soon.

Production begins in May on season 4, and the roll out of the 16 episodes will begin in October. »

Movie Review: “Room 237″

4 April 2013 9:59 AM, PDT

Since Stanley Kubrick’s “loose” adaptation of Stephen King’s novel debuted in 1980, many people have been unable to get it out of their heads. When the film came out, it wasn’t appreciated or lauded as it is today. Many deemed it a disappointment, a shell of Kubrick’s other master works, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange or Dr. Strangelove. Obviously, viewpoints shift, as The Shining is, to many, the scariest movie ever made. I know it’s up there for me.

But Rodney Ascher’s mesmerizing documentary, Room 237, puts the spotlight on five different people who have vastly different ideas about what Stanley Kubrick’s most divisive film was really about. It wasn’t just a horror movie; there were hidden meanings littered all over the place. Stanley Kubrick’s brilliance has only gained in stature as time has passed, and everyone, from »
