Is Avatar this generation's Star Wars? Is Avatar Better than Star Wars? The debate begins!

I saw Avatar on Saturday. My opinion of the film isn’t all that important or interesting -- but I basically agree with EW’s estimable Owen Gleiberman, although I must admit I continue to think about it more than the usual "B" grade movie. More interesting and perhaps more noteworthy was the reaction of my 8-year-old son Ben. He’s a big Star Wars fan (so you know that I’m raising him well) and interested in sci-fi stuff (especially sci-fi stuff that involves spaceships and loud battles), and so he’s been obsessed with Avatar for weeks. Until now, …

Robert Downey Jr.'s allegedly gay 'Sherlock Holmes.' Seriously?!

Last night on "The Late Show With David Letterman," Robert Downey Jr. stopped by to promote Sherlock Holmes, in theaters on Friday, and bantered with Dave about the possibility that Arthur Conan Doyle’s great detective and his long-suffering sidekick Dr. Watson were more than just mates. Or, as Downey reportedly put it on 'Letterman:' “They were homos.” According to Popeater.com, execs at Sherlock’s studio Warner Bros. are freaking out that the star’s coy joking is setting the wrong perception for the film, i.e. conditioning the audience to view Downey’s Holmes and Jude Law’s Watson as lovers. …

'Jersey Shore' goes Funnyordie

We knew Jersey Shore just seemed too good to be true. This Funnyordie video -- starring Pauly D, The Situation, and Snookie -- jokingly claims the whole thing is a farce, and the trio are just tortured method actors forced to deliver trashy material. Of course, since this is the first time we've been able to see these cats actually act (we think), the clip begs the question: Does anyone in the cast actually  have an acting career in their future? The Situation seems to have a not-half-bad acting situation going on, but if I were to judge purely based …

PopWatch PSA: 'Better Off Ted' is new tonight

We know it seems like this week's TV is a wasteland of repeats, holiday specials, and Hoarders/Intervention marathons -- but rejoice! Khandi Alexander guest-stars as Lem (Malcolm Barrett, right)'s intimidating mother on a new episode of ABC's Better Off Ted tonight at 9:30 Et. I'm hoping Khandi wears the enormous designer shades of CSI: Miami's Dr. Alexx (pictured) and speaks with the sass of NewsRadio's Catherine Duke. Before Bot,  Scrubs is new, too. This is just like yesterday, when I posted that The Nutcracker was on PBS, except at least five more people will care. That's …

Videogame face-off: 'FIFA 10' vs. 'NBA2K10'

Ah, the sporting life. But how to pick a discipline? Face-Off has you covered. Today, it's soccer and basketball, with the newest entries from EA and 2K going head-to-head. Check back each weekday through Dec. 24 for a new match-up. In this corner… FIFA 10 The popularity of fantasy sports leagues has made realism in video games an absolute necessity. That's something the FIFA franchise seems to take to heart, and this latest incarnation of its popular soccer series is its best work to date. This version makes significant improvements to the game's AI, both on and off the field -- particularly …

I'm ready for a long-term relationship -- with 'Spartacus.' Could networks learn from Starz's early-renewal policy?

The revelation yesterday that Starz has renewed its upcoming big-budget action-adventure series Spartacus more than a month before the first season even premieres is surely strange news in today's skittish, canceled-before-you-launch television world. Just to break down the astounding move a bit more: Yes, we viewers have yet to see a single episode. (But, I mean, we have seen the above actor's chest and know that Lucy Lawless is in the cast, and those two things probably would have been enough for me to sign on!) And the network has yet to see ratings or response from advertisers. And it's …

A&E's 'Hoarders': Ever pat yourself on the back while watching?

Does anyone else ever look at the total squalor on A&E's Hoarders and feel a little better about themselves? You can tell me. We can be horrible together. Honestly, I am one of the grossest people I know in terms of cleanliness and organization, and this show does wonders for my self-esteem. Let's take a look at the pats on the back I awarded myself after last night's new episode, which featured Bob from Massachusetts, a father of at least four, whose family had been driven out of their house by bedbugs, and Dick from Columbus, a collector of …

'Frozen' movie trailer: There will be no blood, because it has solidified

In Frozen, out February 5, three college students get stuck on a chairlift as creatures and possibly sparkly teenage vampires howl at them from the forest. Based on the just-released trailer, below, the film is like 2003's Open Water re-imagined as Precarious Suspended Bench. Or, as the trailer boasts, it'll "do for skiing what Jaws did for swimming." Wait, what? People want that? PopWatchers, press play and tell me if you want that. The basic message I got from that trailer is that that pink lady should probably have considered gloves. Also: If you were thinking about going skiing this winter, …

'Santa' Betty White tells Craig Ferguson exactly where he can stuff a few dollars this Christmas

"In the crack," of course, suggested Betty White, part-time Salvation Army Santa. "Just like in the gay strip clubs!" She would know. It's always a delight when Betty pops by the Late Late Show, but something about this Christmassy appearance made it extra-special. It might just be that the way she said "there's nothing like the feeling of a big pair of bells in my hand" reminded us of Alec Baldwin's Schweddy Balls on SNL's 'The Delicious Dish.' Some choice Betty Bites: -"Most of the costumes you've seen me in are made of leather. We were …

'Real World: D.C.': Change we can believe in? Or more of the same?

MTV is planting The Real World flag in our nation's capital for its upcoming 23rd season (kicking off Dec. 30), and from the trailer the cable channel has released, the latest incarnation looks like it could be rather good. In my mind, simply moving the show from the cesspool setting of last season—hello, body shots in Cancun!—to somewhere more refined and buttoned-up raises the series' Iq by about 100 points. The fact that the White House is in the background in some scenes? Insta-prestige! See the trailer here: Doesn't it all look slightly—gasp, gasp, gasp!—classy? Shocking for The Real World, …

Oscars: Would 'Twilight: Eclipse' footage make you watch?

If, on Oscar night 2010, Robert Pattinson showed up, looking drop-dead sexy in a tuxedo, and premiered an exclusive first-look at The Twilight Saga: Eclipse live on the stage of the Kodak Theatre, would you tune in to watch? Matthew Belloni, a columnist at The Hollywood Reporter, proposes that this year's Oscar producers do exactly that to help boost ratings for the annual awards show. It's an intriguing idea, but would it work? When Titanic won Best Picture in 1998 it was the highest-rated Oscars in history, and the ratings have trended downward ever since. Last year's telecast got a makeover and a new host, …

Jimmy Fallon puts new twist on 'SNL' holiday classic: 'I Wish It Was Christmas Today'

Last night, Jimmy Fallon fulfilled a Christmas wish for a lot of fans of his previous work on SNL: He reunited with Horatio Sanz and performed the famed holiday ditty "I Wish It Was Christmas Today." And: the Strokes' lead singer Julian Casablancas joined them! Until I saw the performance last night and did a little Googling this morning, I hadn't realized that Casablancas actually covered the song himself this year. So his addition to the set made perfect sense. See Fallon, Sanz, and Casablancas' performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon here: Seeing this got me thinking of the original, …

Can Ben Folds get his own TV show, please?

Last night's finale of The Sing-Off brings the sad development that one of the show's judges, Ben Folds, won't be on my TV screen as much now. The show itself was borderline cheesy (but still enjoyable), but Folds himself was a revelation! He was hands-down the best judge I've seen on a competition show (EW's Ken Tucker also loved him from the start). Folds offered the perfect combination of nice-guy genuinely rooting-for-everyone comments, knowledgeable technical advice (without sounding like a snob), and humor. I met him a few times when we both lived in Chapel Hill, Nc and he was …

'Toy Story 3' clip: Gasp! Buzz and Co. in the trash?!

21 December 2009 6:45 PM, PST

I don't know who gasped more during this new clip from Toy Story 3: Woody, Buzz, et. al. as they weather the harrowing ordeal that is Andy's decision about who goes with him to college and who goes in the Black Plastic Trash Bag of Doom; or me, watching it all unfold. I'm going to go with me, since my multiple gasps were more of the Omigod melodramatic variety. No, I am not ashamed. Me = Officially hooked. My favorite Pixarian detail: The quick glimpse of the faded toy height chart on Andy's bedroom door frame as Woody freaks out that, …

Jeff Probst blogs about 'Survivor' finale: 'Nobody outplayed Russell'

21 December 2009 6:39 PM, PST

Okay, now that the show is officially over I’m going to take off my hosting and producing hat and just give you my personal reaction to what went down last night. I think Russell was the victim of a jury of bitter people. I am not taking anything away from Natalie, she clearly did a great job of reading the group dynamic of the jury and as a result she deserves the money. Oftentimes on Survivor, the vote does come down to a choice where a determining factor is “how nice someone is” but that’s usually when all …

'Survivor Talk': Natalie responds to being called 'pitiful' by Russell

21 December 2009 3:51 PM, PST

Spoiler Alert! Trying to avoid news as to who won Survivor: Samoa? Then this is not the article for you. (Seriously, stop reading if you don't want to know who won.) Okay, everyone all good from here on out? All clear? Then let's proceed. Natalie White may not have been the popular choice among viewers to take home the million dollars as winner of Survivor: Samoa, but she was popular with the only nine people who mattered: the jury. The 26-year-old pharmaceutical sales rep called in to talk all about how she knew the jury would be voting along emotional …

Britney Spears hates it when people think she gardens!

21 December 2009 3:38 PM, PST

Britney Spears has made her own list of who's been naughty or nice this year. Well, at least the naughty part. At her official blog, Britney's camp has posted the "Year in Bs," which is the 75 stories published about Britney last year that they deem to be untrue or "simply offensive to the sensibilities." Seems pretty self-absorbed to make this list in the first place, but I had to crack up that number 57 is a story saying she was into gardening. Uh,growing a green thumb would have been the most normal thing she did all year, why not let us think that's true! …
