'Gossip Girl'... The Comic Book?

Yen Press, who previously made headlines with their announcement of an official "Twilight" graphic novel in the works, will soon mine another teen-friendly property with a manga series based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s bestselling "Gossip Girl" novels.

Written and illustrated by HyeKyung Baek, "Gossip Girl: For Your Eyes Only" will pull from the same source material as the hit CW television series chronicling the lives of students at an elite private school in New York City, while also offering "an original re-imagination of the girls’ senior year focusing on the lives of Blair and Vanessa."

The "Gossip Girl" manga will be serialized monthly in the "Yen Plus" anthology, beginning with the January 2010 issue.

“There are few series in the publishing world that have been as impactful or successful as Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl," said Yen Press Publishing Director Kurt Hassler in the official announcement of the series. »

Matt Damon Confirms He Was Up For Two-Face Role In 'The Dark Knight'

It seems like we're treated to a new, almost-happened casting or filmmaker decision every week that makes us wonder how a movie would've turned out if a few early discussions had gone another way. Last week it was Quentin Tarantino revealing how close he came to directing "Green Lantern," and this week it's "Invictus" actor Matt Damon confirming that he was once up for the role of Harvey Dent (a.k.a. Two-Face) in Christopher Nolan's record-breaking blockbuster "The Dark Knight."

"I couldn't — there was a scheduling thing," Damon told MTV News of why he didn't play the Gotham District Attorney. "I never spoke to Chris Nolan. I'm a big Chris Nolan fan, but I never spoke to him."

Even though he wasn't able to play the role, Damon said he doesn't think anyone could've played it better than the actor who eventually brought Harvey Dent to the big »

Josh Brolin Describes 'Jonah Hex' Brawls, Making Out With Megan Fox

"Jonah Hex" star Josh Brolin dropped by "The Tonight Show" yesterday, and spilled some details about the upcoming big-screen debut of DC's ex-confederate bounty hunter — including some thoughts on what John Malkovich brings to the lead villain role, and (we're not making this up) what it's like to make out with Megan Fox.

According to Brolin, Malkovich wasn't the studio's first choice to play Quentin Turnbull, the vicious plantation owner who faces off against Jonah Hex in the film. In fact, Brolin said he was the one who convinced the studio to bring in the "Burn After Reading" actor.

"This was another angry role that I thought John [Malkovich] could pull off," said Brolin. "The studio had brought up a Gary Oldman or somebody else."

"I said the thing about Gary Oldman or other actors like that is when they get angry ... they're usually pretty straightforward with their anger, you can »

Brian Bendis Says 'Fortune And Glory' Sequel Is Just Waiting For The Right Ending

Back in October, Brian Michael Bendis joked with MTV News that the sequel to his graphic novel "Fortune and Glory: A True Hollywood Comic Book Story" (chronicling the trials and tribulations of adapting his creator-owned comics in Hollywood) should be called "Not Dead Yet" due to the on-again, off-again status of the "Torso" movie over the last decade.

And while Bendis might have been joking about the title of the book, he was serious about publishing a follow-up to the critically acclaimed book.

"Yes, I've been writing the sequel over these years," Bendis told MTV News. "There's plenty of stuff going on — even, as we've talked about, with 'Torso' itself. We're almost at the point where the behind-the-scenes of 'Torso' would be a more interesting movie than the movie."

In fact, it's probably no surprise that a sequel to "Fortune and Glory" could be on the way. After all, with »

Will Josh Brolin Join 'Men In Black 3' Cast?

Josh Brolin isn't starring in "Cowboys & Aliens," but the "Jonah Hex" star is nonetheless rumored to be squaring off against extraterrestrials in the "Men in Black" franchise.

According to Hero Complex, Brolin might be up for a role in "Men in Black III," the recently announced third installment in the alien-centric franchise. While the exact details of Brolin's would-be character are currently unknown, there are already a few rumored choices as to who he might play.

"He could play a new single-monikered government agent, with Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K passing the baton to Brolin's character," reports the article. "Or he could play Agent K as a young man. Or something else entirely."

There would be no small amount of irony in Brolin taking over the role of Agent K from Tommy Lee Jones, as the two starred alongside one another in "No Country For Old Men," despite sharing »

Warren Ellis Explains Changes In 'Red' Adaptation

Recently, "Red" creators Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner discussed their involvement in and knowledge of the developing film adaptation of their WildStorm miniseries. While Hamner spoke at length about the project, Ellis only offered a brief set of comments to say the script was "not bad."

Now, Ellis is giving the project a much closer examination on his official website. The acclaimed comic book author acknowledged that the film would be very different from the initial "Red" miniseries, largely due to the short length of the source material.

"['Red'] the film is very different. Not least because it needed to generate more material than the book itself actually constituted," said Ellis. "It is in fact best to consider ['Red'] as a short story being adapted into film."

Ellis contends that the comic book's 66 pages would translate to 40 minutes of film footage at absolute best, leading to a bevy of necessary changes for the adaptation. »

Exclusive: Morgan Freeman 'Just Knows' Christopher Nolan's On 'Batman 3,' Wants Catwoman

8 December 2009 3:16 PM, PST

Aside from the occasional rumor (Megan Fox as Catwoman?!), updates on the "Batman 3" front have been quiet as of late. That makes sense, as writer/director Christopher Nolan is still shooting his post-"Dark Knight" thriller "Inception," which isn't due in theaters until summer 2010.

Yet, as Nolan keeps himself more than a bit busy on that mammoth production, one of his "Dark Knight" stars is certain the "Batman" series is not far from his creative thoughts.

"I know—I just know—that Chris is working on number three," Morgan Freeman told MTV News. "He couldn't possibly not be."

Freeman's spent two films working alongside Nolan in the role of Bruce Wayne's confidante, Lucius Fox, so clearly the Oscar-winning actor knows a thing or two about the filmmaker's creative process. But Freeman made clear that's he not operating with any sort of inside knowledge—just a gut feeling from one artist to another. »

Exclusive: Ryan Reynolds Talks 'Deadpool' Costume, Movie Trailer And 'Green Lantern' Questions

8 December 2009 1:01 PM, PST

Yesterday, we brought you an update on the "Deadpool" movie's writer and director search, straight from leading man Ryan Reynolds — and now we have the promised follow-up with the man tagged to bring both the Marvel mercenary and one of DC's most iconic characters, Green Lantern, to the big screen.

"No, there's no Deadpool suit that I've tried on," Reynolds told MTV News when asked if he's had a chance to see himself in the character's familiar red-and-black costume. However, that doesn't mean he hasn't given any thought to other aspects of Wade Wilson's solo debut.

"I've told Fox already that the only way there's ever gong to be a 'Deadpool' trailer is if Deadpool makes his own trailer," he laughed. "He needs to be talking to the movie audience ... with the movie trailer voice: 'In a world... gone mad... one man... must stand alone...'"

Vote For Your Favorite Comic Book Movie Of 2009!

8 December 2009 11:01 AM, PST

It's that time of year when we run down our favorite projects from the world of comics and comic book movies, folks. And while that's all well and good, this year I want to make sure Splash Page readers have a say in all the "Best Of" madness, too!

Next week, we're rolling out bunches of "Best Of" lists covering our favorite books, series, films and anything else that made big waves around Splash Page HQ over the last year — and along with rolling out our own picks, we'll reveal your pick for the best comic book movie of 2009.

Was "Wolverine" the best there was at what it did (this year)? Has distance (and the rest of the year's films) made you fonder of "Watchmen"? Or was one of this year's animated movies (i.e., "Hulk Vs." or "Green Lantern: First Flight") better than anything the live-action world had to offer? »

Star Sapphire On TV, Superman In 'Scott Pilgrim,' And 'Blue Beetle' Chatter In Today's Twitter Report

8 December 2009 9:46 AM, PST

Even if you missed "The Big Bang Theory" last night, you can still catch Geoff Johns' post about the Star Sapphire appearance that occurred. The CBS show is known for its geek-friendly T-shirts, and the Sapphires' symbol from "Green Lantern" certainly sounds like a sensible fit.

Elsewhere, there was a hilarious exchange this morning between the "Blue Beetle" creative team which should serve as a lesson to writers everywhere about treating your penciler with the utmost respect and consideration when planning your scripts. Don't worry, though, it was all in good fun — as was Stan Lee's desire to appear in a Batman film and Bryan Lee O'Malley's claim to inspiring DC's new "Earth One" Ogn format.

I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for December 8, 2009.

'Batman Returns' Actor Danny DeVito Reflects On Tim Burton And The Benefits Of Being The Penguin

8 December 2009 8:01 AM, PST

Last month, we gave you a peek inside the Tim Burton exhibit at New York City's Museum Of Modern Art that included some never-before-seen art from his planned "Superman Lives" movie. While the exhibit is running through April 2010, here's something you won't be able to see there when you check it out yourself: Danny DeVito reflecting on his time as The Penguin in Burton's 1992 film "Batman Returns."

"I loved being with [Burton] on the set. We love hanging out," DeVito told MTV News during the red carpet opening of the exhibit. "I love to watch where he's going, what he's trying, all the different things he does."

Remembering his time in the sequel to 1990's "Batman," DeVito indicated that it was one of the few times it was actually good to be the actor forced to don the heavy makeup and costume.

Marvel Studios Chairman To Step Down When Disney Deal Is Finalized

8 December 2009 7:01 AM, PST

With the impending sale of Marvel to Disney set to be finalized by the end of the year, we could be seeing the first significant sign of change.

Variety is reporting that Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel will step down as soon as Disney takes control of Marvel. Maisel joined the company in 2004 as the president of the newly formed Marvel Studios and was instrumental in raising the $525 million capital that allowed Marvel to finance and produce its own films, including “Iron Man” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

Maisel was previously a development executive at Disney and he is credited as being one of the first Marvel executives to speak with Disney about a potential deal.

Maisel will stay on “Iron Man 2”, “Thor” and “Captain America” as an assistant executive producer before leaving to pursue “other opportunities.” Kevin Feige — the current Marvel Studios President and often Marvel’s public face »

Could 'Superman: Earth One' Demonstrate How A Krypton-Free 'Superman' Movie Might Work?

8 December 2009 5:46 AM, PST

The "Superman" franchise is currently in the midst of a lengthy legal battle between DC Comics/Warner Bros. and the heirs of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Recently, the Siegel and Shuster estates were awarded the rights to certain aspects of the "Superman" origin story — namely, anything and everything relating to Kal-El's Kryptonian origins.

DC Entertainment's loss of Clark's alien roots has led to some understandable fan skepticism about whether a new "Superman" movie could work without at least a passing reference to the lead character's home planet, particularly considering the long-rumored plan of a complete "Superman" reboot.

But the recent announcement of "Superman: Earth One" — the first in a series of original, out-of-continuity graphic novels written by J. Michael Straczynski — could offer a glance at exactly how the Man of Steel might fly on the screen without the Krypton component.

'Watchmen' Is One Of MTV's Best Movie Trailers Of 2009

7 December 2009 3:16 PM, PST

From MTV Movies: As the year comes to a close, the MTV Movies team has begun to look back at the cinematic year that was 2009. While we pick our favorite films and performances and talk to the brightest lights in Hollywood about which movies moved them this year, we also can't forget what often gets us most excited about a film: the trailer. From the superheroes of "Watchmen" to the supernatural creatures of "The Wolfman," here are our favorite trailers of the year.

1. "Watchmen"

Zack Snyder's adaptation of the most celebrated graphic novel ever was possibly the most divisive film of the year — "Perfection!" some cried. "Abomination!" others countered — but everyone had to agree this trailer was pure badassery. Was there a cooler shot in 2009 than the Comedian flying in slo-mo through a window? The trailer gave us that gem and so many more. Dr. Manhattan, in all his massive, »

Michael Cera Talks 'Scott Pilgrim' Comics, Band Practice And The Ex-Boyfriend Dilemma

7 December 2009 1:46 PM, PST

With filming wrapped and director Edgar Wright in the editing room working on putting "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" together, the only thing left to do is wait for the film's 2010 release date... and to ask as many of the actors involved as possible for details about the movie.

Jason Schwartzman told us last month that Wright "would be Ticketholder #1 in line for ['Scott Pilgrim']" if he wasn't directing it. But Wright wasn't the only fan on set. When we caught up with Michael Cera on his promotional tour for "Youth in Revolt," the film's very own Scott Pilgrim admitted he was a longtime fan of the series as well.

"I read them before there was even a movie. There were only a few out. There were only like two out at the time, but yeah, I loved them. They're so great," said Cera. "There's five out now and the sixth one »

'Iron Man 2' Voted MTV Readers' Most-Anticipated 2010 Comic Book Movie

7 December 2009 12:31 PM, PST

Well, that certainly wasn't much of a surprise. After we asked readers to pick the 2010 comic book movie they're most looking forward to, they voted "Iron Man 2" the overwhelming winner — but not all of the results were as predictable as Tony Stark and War Machine's victory.

In the end, "Iron Man 2" nabbed just over half the total votes, with Matthew Vaughn's "Kick-Ass" and Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World" each taking home 11 percent of the vote and sharing the runner-up spot. Both "Jonah Hex" and "Dead of Night" also had decent showings, with the latter receiving 7 percent of the total vote via a big outpouring of fan support and an active write-in campaign. (I'd accidentally left the Brandon Routh-starring film out of the poll.)

Read on for the full results and some reader feedback about the results.
