Trailer: Everything Falls Apart for Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson in Red Band 'Pain & Gain'

5 April 2013 5:49 PM, PDT

Any doubts you may have had about Michael Bay's Pain & Gain should be washed away in the latest red band trailer. Though it's been out for a week, it's still worth revisiting as we countdown to the movie's April 26 release. The movie follows a trio of bodybuilders who get caught in an extortion and kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson (yes, he's in almost everything this year) and Anthony Mackie, Pain & Gain is Bay's pet project that he had been postponing due to the trio of Transformers movies that required his attention ove rthe past few years. Frankly, the movie was worth the wait. As you'll see, Rebel Wilson appear to once again steal scenes in yet another movie and Ken Jeong returns to our...

Sound Off: Which Spielberg Classic Should Next Get the 3D IMAX Treatment?

5 April 2013 10:48 AM, PDT

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park celebrates its 20th anniversary with a 3D IMAX upgrade that, believe it or not, improves on a popcorn blockbuster that was beyond entertaining at the time of its release in 1993.    While I’m not ready to jump on the bandwagon that’s like to dust off classic thrillers and automatically apply 3D IMAX visual tricks, whether they fit or not, I recognize that with a movie like Jurassic Park, the upgrades fit. Spielberg’s digital dinosaurs were basically created for IMAX screens, and the 3D enhances the handful of spectacular action set pieces.    Movies like Jurassic Park give us a reason to go out of our way to see such larger-than-life stories told on the big screen. And it’s one of many...

No Vampires or Werewolves Here; Kellan Lutz To Play Title Role in 'Hercules 3D'

5 April 2013 10:40 AM, PDT

Twi-hards, if you were wondering what Kellan Lutz would be up to now that Twilight movies are done, we've got good news for you. As per what seems to be a new trend in Hollywood, the actor has been cast as the title character in Hercules 3D. Lutz's casting means we'll get a Hercules duel in theaters next year as Brett Ratner gets set to direct Dwayne Johnson in a different movie about the heroic son of Zeus. THR states that director Renny Harlin's version of the character will be similar in tone to Ridley Scott's Gladiator. The film is targeting a March 2014 release. "It takes more than a good physique to portray the most legendary, mythological personality in history – and Kellan has exactly that, personality," Harlin said. "He's...

Film Mom: 'Jurassic Park: A 3D IMAX Experience' – for Kids, or Not?

5 April 2013 9:56 AM, PDT

Converted into 3D and IMAX, Steven Spielberg’s 20-year-old Jurassic Park seems like it’s for kids: it’s about dinosaurs and theme parks, both of which kids love, and two kids are in the movie. So, should you or shouldn’t you take your kid to see the 3D IMAX version of the dinosaur classic? Here are 9 reasons you should, and 1 that may make you think twice. 1.       Jurassic Park may have been made in 1993 but this conversion is 2013’s best movie as yet. In fact… 2.       Jurassic Park: A 3D IMAX Experience will leave audiences wondering “why don’t they make movies like this anymore?” 3.       And also wondering why Steven Spielberg...

'Carrie' Showcases Telekinetic Powers in New Trailer

4 April 2013 5:08 PM, PDT

Up until this past January, the remake of the horror classic Carrie was poised to make the spring movie season really bloody. Instead, the film vacated its March 15 release date and relocated to October which means one thing – trailers! The first full length trailer premiered this afternoon on Yahoo Movies and builds on the teaser trailer we got last October. That teaser featured an extended bird's-eye-view shot over a series of fires in a neighborhood culminating on a bloodied Chloe Grace Moretz snapping her head up and looking directly into the camera. The new trailer builds on the teaser, offering up a first look at Julianne Moore as Carrie's mentally unstable and deeply religious mother Margaret White. We also get a look at the discovery of Carrie's...

When Can I Watch 'Jurassic Park' with My Kids?

4 April 2013 1:29 PM, PDT

"That was a terrible idea," our 9-year-old son, P.J., exclaimed at the end of our Jurassic Park screening.    For a moment, I feared he was condemning our decision as parents to share Steven Spielberg’s modestly terrifying dino adventure with the kids. But when we asked him what was so terrible, he said, "Making an amusement park with real dinosaurs!"   So even at 9, P.J. understood what philanthropist John Hammond (Sir Richard Attenborough) couldn’t figure out until it was far too late.    Spielberg’s movie, which turns 20 this year, is roaring back into theaters with an upgraded 3D and IMAX conversion, ready to transport audience members back to Isla Nublar … and right back to the edges of their...

Roger Ebert Dies at 70

4 April 2013 12:53 PM, PDT

Film critic Roger Ebert has died at the age of 70 of complications from cancer. The Pultizer Prize winning film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times had recently posted on his journal that he was taking a leave of absence due to treatment from a hip fracture. Subsequent evaluations revealed that the pain was a result from a return of cancer. Ebert's battle with thyroid cancer began in 2002. In 2006, he lost part of his lower jaw and ability to verbally speak. A true fan of movies, Ebert became the Sun-Times' film critic in 1967 and later launched a popular TV show with Gene Siskel called Sneak Previews at Chicago's public broadcasting station Wttw. The pair moved on to a syndicated show called At the Movies with Siskel & Ebert in 1982 and then created Siskel &...

Watch: Awesome Fan-Made 'Calvin and Hobbes' Movie Trailer

4 April 2013 11:32 AM, PDT

Calvin and Hobbes creator Bill Watterson has never sold the film rights to his popular comic series. The reclusive Watterson penned the award-winning cartoon series from 1985-1995 and fought with publishers who tried to merchandise his work. He felt that such actions would cheapen his comic. That being said, it'd be interesting to see what Watterson thinks of this dark fan-made trailer. Made by YouTube channel Gritty Reboots, the three-minute trailer takes its lead from recent Hollywood blockbusters like Christopher Nolan's Batman series. The Gritty Reboots team updated the comic, which now finds a grown-up Calvin being tormented by his imagination. Hobbes, his stuffed animal tiger, has gone rogue and is seeking to take over Calvin's brain. Would you like to see...

Trailer: Ryan Gosling Reunites with 'Drive' Director for 'Only God Forgives'

4 April 2013 6:30 AM, PDT

After the cinematic gut punch that was Drive, film fans likely are ready to follow Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn down any path. If the red-band trailer for their latest collaboration, Only God Forgives, is any indication, though, this next journey is going to hurt.    The clip, shared on Yahoo, sets up the film’s premise. Gosling plays an inherently evil man who gets tangled up with some nasty customers who occupy the world of Bangkok boxing. From the looks of it, that slice of life is overrun by a criminal element.    Be careful! This red-band trailer has a decent amount of blood, and some violent imagery:      The beauty of this tease is that it does just that … tease. We’re treated...

Cine Latino: What Are Antonio Banderas and Zoe Saldana Up To?

3 April 2013 3:26 PM, PDT

Cine Latino covers, well, all things relating to Latino culture and the movies, every Wednesday. Banderas Mines the Story The remarkable rescue of 33 Chilean miners that occurred three years ago captivated the world’s attention; of course, it didn’t take long before Hollywood began planning to take the heart-wrenching, death-defying story to the big screen. A few years ago Academy Award-nominated producer Mike Medavoy  (Black Swan, Shutter Island) entered into an agreement with the miners and screenwriter Jose Rivera (Motorcycle Diaries), and last year hired director Patricia Riggen (Girl in Progress) to the helm the project. She recently told the Daily Star that Antonio Banderas will be starring in Los 33, but just whom he's playing is still unclear....

Details, as expected, are being kept under wraps, though we have heard that Nolan’s film will deal in different stages with time travel and alternate dimensions. It might even involve wormholes that swallow a group of explorers.    And how we’re learning that the group will be led by Matthew McConaughey.   The Magic Mike star confirmed to the Star Tribune that he is definitely on board for...

3 April 2013 11:14 AM, PDT

And of course who could forget Grumpy Cat. Thanks to some free time and some computer software, we now have the newest member of the X-Men. That's right. Meet Cyclops Cat.
