Weekend Box Office Predictions Game: Holmes Sleuths Chipmunks

Studios are hoping for a Merry Christmas at the box office as multiple films hit theaters on or just before December 25 in hopes of not only enjoying a successful launch, but also supplanting James Cameron's Avatar from its first place perch.

The two new films with the best shot at taking out Avatar are Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Also arriving is the R-rated romantic comedy It's Complicated while Nine and Up in the Air with George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick see their first wide release.

The goal of the Weekend Box Office Prophet game is to predict the scores of 5 films for the upcoming Friday through Sunday period, in this case December 25 - 27. The films in play are listed below, but please keep in mind that the Chipmunks and Up in the Air

First Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant Blu-ray Details and Cover Art

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant with John C. Reilly and Ken Watanabe failed to lure in moviegoers during its fall theatrical run in amassing a paltry $16.6 worldwide box office total.

The film based on the popular book series will look for a new, broader audience when it unspools onto Blu-ray Disc and DVD on February 23 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

While I do not have the full details to share about this release, I can confirm the single-disc Blu-ray will be presented in 2.35:1 1080p video and 5.1 DTS-hd Master Audio.

Bonus features will include at a minimum (i.e. there might be more) deleted scenes, a Guide to Becoming a Vampire, and Tour du Freak.

Universal has set the Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant Blu-ray Srp at $36.98 with Amazon.com pricing expected to come in around $25.

Avatar Hauls $77 Million to Top Weekend Box Office

21 December 2009 8:32 PM, PST

James Cameron's Avatar fought a nasty east coast storm and still managed a strong $77 million opening weekend at the Us box office, good enough for the second highest December opening behind I Am Legend's $77.2 million. Factoring in international sales brings Avatar's total gross thus far to $241.6 million with sunny skies and holiday breaks for more business ahead.

Guessing Avatar was crucial to where players placed in our Weekend Box Office Prophet game. The top score went to a new player with an ironic name, RandomAvatar, who missed all 5 films eligible in the game (Avatar, Invictus, Did You Hear About the Morgans?, The Princess and the Frog, The Blind Side) by a mere $11.4 million. Speng and mailmax11 finished second and third, respectively.

When push came to shove the Prophet beat all the other players by a three-to-two margin (view the results) which means the three prizes up for …

Hit-Girl Goes Wild in Red Band Kick-Ass Trailer

21 December 2009 7:07 PM, PST

Lionsgate has released a new red band trailer for Kick-Ass via IGN that features Chloe Moretz proving why her character carries the nickname "Hit-Girl."

Matthew Vaughn's very R-rated look at nerds-turned-superheroes has been steadily building buzz since making a huge splash last year at Comic-Con. The recent public premiere at Bnat was met with overwhelming praise from the same crowd the film is designed for.

Co-starring with Chloe are Aaron Johnson and Nicolas Cage. Kick-Ass hits theaters on April 16.
